Pay attention--this is one of the most telling scenes in the whole series. It is a scene of contrasts--Carmine, the completely stoic and unemotional old school boss who is all business, and Johnny Sack, the future Mafia boss who lets his emotions control him and is willing to make bad decisions because of that flaw. Carmine's death marks a turning point in the series. When Johnny becomes boss, he put his lust for control over business, thereby marking the decline of both the Lupertazzi and the Soprano families. In some ways it is a metaphor for the Mob itself, since once the old school bosses like Carlo Gambino died off, the undisciplined bosses like John Gotti took over, and the Mob has never been the same since.

Carmine actually took a big risk on this one. Emotional or not, Johnny was one of his closest guys and very valuable to his organization. Johnny still felt insulted after this and was even planning to whack Carmine in the Season 4 finale before the hit was called off. Carmine dies of a stroke in the Season 5 premiere but if he'd lived I'm pretty sure Johnny would have ended up killing him eventually, especially once he had Phil backing him up. Why risk the loyalty of one of your closest guys just to protect a piece of shit like Ralph Cifaretto? Ralph was pretty much a dead man walking at this point anyway since he was making enemies left and right.

Another Godfather quote relevant to this discussion: "I don't like violence. I'm a business man. Blood is a big expense". If you whack a made guy from another Family, a high earning capo no less, there better be a good reason. The fallout from a war could cost you more than those words cost John. We see in S6 how sick the NY guys are of Phil's war, even though it was much more justified at the beginning than this.

@donectandemperveniamincael17839 жыл бұрын
+pavel brodskiy It's Little Carmine Jr., Carmine's son that Tony and Johnny Sack considered an idiot, not Carmine Sr.
@pavelbrodskiy72169 жыл бұрын
They also implied that Carmine Sr. was an idiot when Tony referred to Little Carmine as "Brainless the Second". It was never verbalized maybe but Tony and Johnny Sack didn't really take him Carmine Sr. seriously.
@JimmyJam11259 жыл бұрын
Disagree. Carmine was The Boss. Who was treated 100% seriously by Tony and even by underboss Stack.
@pavelbrodskiy72169 жыл бұрын
I kinda disagree with that since Johnny Sack was ready to undermine Carmine Sr. by (almost) going thru with the Ralph Cifaretto hit, thereby directly disobeying Carmine's orders not to touch Ralph. Sack and Tony were inches away from whacking him if Tony hadn't backed out last minute. Don't get me wrong, I loved Carmine Sr, and I thought he was an awesome boss, I just don't think he was respected by Sack.

Carmine has a lot of redeeming traits within the group of bosses we’ve seen, his attention to business, professionalism, and subtle manipulation skills. But he’s got flaws such as his attitude towards building a tight and unified crew. Making an enemy out of john without even caring. And he almost got clipped for it. In general, he’s a better boss than Tony due to his increasingly erratic behavior, and we haven’t seen enough of Jackie, so Carmine is the best boss in the show but it’s not THAT far away from Tony (if you’d think so), but because of how long he was able to keep his position as a successful and respected boss, despite his lack of attention and friendship with his relationships. Brilliant show.

I liked Bobby a lot, same goes for John. Pity the way them both ended - one dying out of cancer on his own family's eyes and the other gunned down in a store, he used to go into on a regular basis. One missed call and that was it... Pity. :) ...but the show was GREAT. BIG THANKS DAVID CHASE! Thumb up. Have a nice day everyone! ;)
