Unfortunately, medical evidence is demonstrating that each pound you put on acts like its own intelligent organism that wants to survive as badly as you do. Gut biome, metabolism, and age are all contributing factors. When I was in my 20's, I morphed from a fat hog to a muscular god. A few decades later, each pound I put on takes 10x the exercise to remove it than it took in my 20's. They are also amassing a ton of evidence that gastric bypass surgery cures diabetes. Given that we live for eternity anyway, and consciousness is all that exists (Donald Hoffman, Ruper Spira, Swami Sarvapriyananda, Upanishads..., ..., ...) I'll simply remove my head with a shotgun when I've had enough of this round and I'm ready to start the next round.

The people helping lead those, can find, lead and join those? they're setting asside however much time to do them. Here's something toss back at peoples saying: Oh I don't have the time. Oh I don't have the energy. I say ok! then try standing when you play video games. Don't park right infront of your work, where you get groceries walk a little farther, then a little more. The point Arnold is making is a very delicate and fine point. Stop making everything you do all day about exercising and obsession with burning a few calories here and there and instead commit to a dedicated 20-30 minutes every day where you do all the exercise you can do with all the focus you can muster and then go about the rest of the day normally without thinking and obsessing about calorie burning and all that. If you cannot take out 20 minutes of each day to work out hard enough, you are living the wrong way!

I met Arnold briefly in 1977, he is a very unusual person (in a good way). He lets nothing stand in the way and this is the very reason he is/was so successful, which also means he is a ruthless competitor. *Removed the funeral part* This video gives some insight into what Joe Weider saw in him from the very beginning, Joe needed more than a bodybuilder and Arnold filled the bill. When this video was made Arnold was already a Millionaire and to think he did not even have the money for a plane ticket to come here in the beginning, Joe Weider paid all his expenses in the beginning. Arnold like all of us has made mistakes but I have always admired him, he is so much more than Conan. *Peace*

Also, Nike changed that in huge ways. Very few people (men or women) worked out in the late 70s even into the early-mid 80s. Nike (and Reebok) ads from back then were all about extolling the benefits of starting a fitness regimen. The ads weren't even about the shoes. Only because they knew that if they could convince people to start integrating a workout program in their lives, they would need a new pair of shoes... honestly, it's kind of fascinating to look back at the Nike ads from back then if you can find them.

Yep, waking up 30 mins early to take care of the only body you get is too much for her to comprehend. I take care of two toddlers and have virtually zero time; but if I work out in front of them, it teaches them good health; I mean my kids have been eating and enjoying things like asparagus since they were on solid foods. Busy schedules are no excuse, if you are planted on the couch for an hour; then spend the first half exercising and the second half relaxing. Exercise during commercial breaks with intensity. Just. Do. Something.

What a class act. He's right, there's not really a replacement for basic fitness. There's no shortcuts or other bullshit, its just you and your drive to do it. He's only asking for 20-30 minutes of her time and while she might be a busy woman, if she doesn't want to set aside the time to do it then it simply isn't going to get done. Arnold handled it very well though, especially her comment about how training wasn't feminine. Not saying Arnold is the perfect person but its great how he changed people's perspectives. Also, he's just as bad ass now as he was back then :)

It's curious to see how much things have changed since then, especially the "women and physical excercise" part. Then again, 35 years is a long time. And it's also funny to see that Arnold and Carson are having an intelligent discussion, while the other two just make noise. The best part was when Arnold said he's not into the whole macho image, and you could see it in the way he said it that he's above that. He's not a macho, because that's attention-hungry manbabies. He's a badass, he doesn't want to impress anyone, he's just doing what he wants to, and excels at it.

He even said he didn't attend his father's funeral in the film because he was preparing for a competition, when it fact it was one of his colleagues who had done so - he and the director decided to go with it for "the effect." That film was not about Arnold. It was about a smoke and mirrors image of a hardcore body builder.

I can't follow that woman at all and couldn't even place who she was. It's ridiculous if a person can't isolate a half hour or so for exercise. And Arnie even gave her "integrated" advice that she didn't even realize: walking up and down the stairs. People gasped when he said he walked up and down ten flights or so, but I've walked up and down 18 flights and I'm not into weight lifting. So to answer that woman's "integrated exercise" question, yes, just use the stairs, stand up while watching television instead of sitting down, hand wash clothes instead of using a washing machine, run to the store instead of ambling to it, use the computer standing up, sneak in some crouches while listening to music standing up, etc. But by far and the most convenient is anaerobically racing up and down stairs. Especially for a celebrity who, on tour, spends most of the time in high-rise hotels, that's easy enough, but then celebrities go for the elevator button instead of the stairs. (I strongly caution those who take my advice seriously DO NOT engage in strenuous anaerobics unless you know your medical condition or have slowly worked up to it.)

I can't understand why there's so much hatred against the Elizabeth Ashley in the comments. Carson's guests were all talking and interacting. Being a guest on a talk show was more interactive in those days. For all her critics, she's a Tony award-winning Broadway actress, and was nominated for Emmys and Golden Globes for her television and film roles. Working as a dramatic stage actor _is_ physically and emotionally exhausting work, especially when doing multiple performances per day. When she made that Carson appearance she was already more successful than most of us will ever be, and she was the first guest on Carson that night. Additional cool points for her; she was married to Hannibal from the A-Team. For people who say she's fat now, she's 76 years old and not really that fat, and still acting. Arnold is not in the same shape as he was either, but it's normal.

Lol this lady is so lazy. I admire the way Arnold makes it clear that you can't just integrate exercise in your daily activities- you have to put time aside and put in some effort. No short cuts!

@@MemoryLane77852 they've replaced the host twice since Carson to keep relevant with younger audiences, but the shows personality changes as well to something very different, the host makes the show.

Arnold doesn't deserve to be surrounded by these wannabe dimwits just trying to make a joke out of his passion.

tdreamgmail the networks don’t want real anymore, they want to entertain people with short attention spans and meaningless drivel to fill the time and be as advertiser safe as possible. There pretty much will never be a Carson or letterman again once the second shift like Conan retires. It will be all yes men with feel good short bits and lip service to the guests while they promote their goods.
