I know people don't respect his acting abilities but I have to say this man knows the secret to being successful at anything he does. Multiple Mr. Olympia titles, best selling author, highest paid action hero and governor. He has had multiple successful carriers while many struggle to have one.
@phaedo138410 жыл бұрын
Funny how most people love to call him an idiot, automatically do an Arnold impersonation and say something negative about him. The truth is he is a smart, incredibly motivated individual who possessed greatness from an early age and did all the right things throughout his life be the successful man he is. You can see in the interview that he truly cares about people and their health and how to be more fit. I truly feel that bodybuilders/muscular people will always be criticized by others simply because they cannot be like them or they lack their desire and work ethic. Those people will always feel inferior. So all they can do is put people like Arnold down and badmouth him.
@phaedo138410 жыл бұрын
You could also say it really boils down to genetics and luck. Hard work, dedication are all genetic traits that Arnold was lucky to be born with. He has said on numerous occasions he wanted to get out of Austria any chance he could and he found an outlet to do that through bodybuilding. He also had luck on his side. He happened to be in his late teens-early twenties when bodybuilding was still in it's infancy and had yet to explode. He met the right people who helped him get to America, he had the name and he never lost the desire to be the best. Being a 7 time Mr. Olympia is a testament to that. I know it's written in our Declaration of Independence, but I don't believe all men are created equal. Some people are born with better abilities than others.

What's fascinating about this interview is you can see Arnold trying to cultivate a well-spoken manner, which he dropped later on - he wanted to come across as intelligent and articulate here, no doubt to push back against the meathead bodybuilder stereotype. My guess is when he became an action movie star, his priorities shifted, and he wanted to support that role by sounding "tougher" in his speech. I think a lot of people don't even realise this version of Arnold ever existed.
@justinexplainseverything15543 жыл бұрын
I'm a big Arnold fan, but I think you are right about that. Something I read that I found interesting, I read that as Arnold started to slowly lose his thick Austrian accent, he would go to special speech classes to keep his thick Austrian accent lol. I think he still today takes speech classes to maintain the accent. The thing is, in Hollywood they want to market you a certain way, in Arnold's case it's his thick, intimidating Austrian accent, and strength, so he had to maintain that image in order to continue making all those action films like Terminator, Commando, etc etc. I still think Arnold is a good guy, and my favorite action star of all-time, but he definitely is now a product of Hollywood.
@holliswilliams84262 жыл бұрын
@@justinexplainseverything1554 I don't think so, I think he literally just still has the accent. Once you have an accent it's hard to lose it, just living in a country where it's spoken doesn't magically make it go away.

Stallone went through this phase also. In an attempt to curtail the general public's idea of him, as Rocky Balboa, he started presenting himself as an educated man (which he is). But he was trying too hard at a certain point, and it was obvious. He would wear business attire with spectacles to make him look like an intellectual. If you've ever seen the movie Tango & Cash, the look and persona he was going for was in full display in that movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger has always been very calculated. Despite this version of himself, shown in this interview, he had always tailored his demeanor towards his goals. However, he maintained a fairly consistent persona across the years, as he understood his strength and value was in being himself.

I'm a woman and I do one hour of cardio every day, then every 2-3 days I do weight lifting with pretty heavy weights for me. In six months I didn't lose weight, I gained 4kg instead but was looking better than ever. I was wondering why, but then I realized I gained that much muscle. Now I know that muscle surely won't make me look ugly, and I'm honestly glad to hear Arnold approve of females who lift, rather than making a fuss about it like my dad and my older brother do. They're so afraid of me becoming some bodybuilder without even realizing that's not the body type I want, nor will I ever take roids. Being toned is my goal for now, along with good stamina.

Arnold said it all: women have less muscle cells/fibers in than men. We will never become a Conan by going to gym. Even men who have abundant different muscle cells (endurance cells x explosion cells) and no matter how they train they will never be a conan because they wont grow. The becoming ugly thing: well I do a heavy job too, train jiu jitsu, have strong shoulders and back (not masculine but good definition) and everyone admire them, specially women at the gym. This thing they say "oh you will be ugly" is a way society found to keep women away from "masculine only" things that can make them sronger and independent

This is why he was noticed. If you ever watch Pumping Iron (how he got famous) you'll notice how incredibly quick-witted and funny he is. He was also known to be extremely conscious of whenever a camera was on him, and knew when to turn on the personality.

It's interesting to note that right at the beginning of the interview, the first thing Arnold talks about, is not giving people false hope by removing his shirt and showing his Mr. Olympia physique as he was promoting fitness for the average person. Whereas, nowadays, that's all you see. The "health" industry is flooded with these blessed people who through the magic of genetics have a flawless body with minimal effort. Then they try to foist their "miracle"system on you. They are shameless in their efforts to attain the almighty buck. It's really quite disgusting. After the average joe buys the miracle system and uses it as advertised, then ends up not much different than when he started, ends up feeling worse about himself. Which is the opposite of his intentions when he bought the damn thing.

Arnold smokes to this day. Cigars but you can still get long cancer from them and a host of nastiness in the throat and mouth. But hey he enjoys it, and I'm less of an expert on cigars than cigarettes, but the vast majority of cigarette smokers will not get cancer. A lot of the ones that did smoked several packs a day and it was a little crazy between WW2 into the 80s or 90s. Prior to that people smoked but much more moderately and lung cancer was very rare. I mean don't take it up if you don't do it already, there are like 100 bad things it can do for you for every 2 good ones, but people do exaggerate on the effects.

You can keep telling yourself that you don't "have time" to exercise, but *nobody* is that busy that they couldn't put 15 or 20 mins a day for a simple workout. The excuses only go so far and at some point you really have to ask yourself how much does your health mean to you.
@ronia31817 жыл бұрын
Louis C Hard labor is a workout. Most people have sedentary jobs though, so being exhausted because you worked all day (construction, ranching, refinery, firefighter - jobs where people truly work hard) is just as lazy excuse.

That bit at the end, where Elizabeth Ashley starts into what almost certainly was looking like an extended story, shows why Johnny Carson was the absolute KING of late night hosts. He knew he had to go to commercial, and somehow he had to stop her. He could have just said, "Stop!" but that would have been awkward. Somehow, on the spur of the moment, he comes up with a humorous quip that shuts her down in a natural way and allows them to go to commercial. Nobody realized what he was doing. That is sheer talent. Brilliant.

Arnold saying a lot of women are out of shape. This was back when you didn't have to be politically correct. People were not thin skin. If a man was to say this in an interview in 2020. This would be considered fat shaming. Like Archie said in All In The Family. Those were the days.

Arnold was running every day during this time and he was down to 199 pounds (his lowest body weight ever as an adult) from his former 250 pounds. Less than a year later he won the 1980 Mr. Olympia and weighed a legit 213 pounds (not the weight he was listed at). During the filming of Conan in 1980/1981 he weighed between 212 and 220 pounds and by the time of Conan The Destroyer and The Terminator in 1984 he was back up to 240 pounds. He gradually lost weight throughout the remainder of the 80's and by the 90's he was down to 210-215 pounds again. Interesting to note, he's also had a hair transplant in recent years and he's lost 3.5" in height since his prime due to knee and hip replacements, as well as having had fused discs in his spine and of course age.
