Heard this version by Johnny Cash on the American Forces radio the night before I flew out of Vietnam after 10 months there with the Australian Army. It struck a chord then and choked me up with bittersweet feelings of relief that I was going home but at the same time deep and profound thoughts of my mates who wouldn't be joining me. Every time I hear this the memories come flooding back and I'm reminded of this chapter of my life and loss of dear friends forever in my thoughts.

When I was bad in my alcoholism, I listened to this song every day before I got out of bed, to remember that there was a chance I could have a story like Johnny cash - addict turned preacher, “outlaw” who became successful. Now I listen to it every day to remind myself how sad those times were, and to inspire me to keep on track. Someone I know just passed away due to alcoholism. He died after losing everything. Someone at the funeral told me this was his favorite song. I never knew that before. Now I wonder if he listened to it and thought of all the things he lost due to the alcohol. And I pray I never end up like him. Rest In Peace to all of those who didn’t make it 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

This song hurts my heart so so badly bc it reminds me of my amazing Dad. I fell life robbed him of his life & this songs lyrics was my Dads life for a long time & to understand this was how life was for him kills me. I wish this world was so much better for him but this was his journey, not mine. Tho I would have gladly walked this journey with him, even tho I was only a wee girl, I would have still walked beside him gladly. 💔😢 My Dad has returned home now but I miss him so so much & wish I had another chance to walk with him bc I would in a nano - no questions asked. Life is at times, is so so unbelievably difficult & cruel & bc I know the pain my Dad suffered this song hits hard, always . Rest easy my beautiful Da . I miss you so much with all my heart. See you on the flip side. I know you will be the one to come for me. What a reunion that will be, but until then my darling Father, please continue to guide me & visit me lots please. For some reason this song makes me happy. I remember when I was a teenager, my father drank every Saturday and he was always aggressive, either verbally or physically. I hated Saturdays but I loved Sundays because he was no longer drunk and he was so hungover that he was sick and couldn't drink. So I would go out in the mornings, stroll on the lonely sidewalks and think about this song. I thought, I can hear the church bells, I can see the sunshine, I can see good fathers swinging their children and everything is alright. And the next Saturday is far away. And I felt strong because I thought how my family doesn't even know this song and I do and it is my world where I can be safe. Today, the weekends are good. My father no longer drinks that much, I live separately and every Sunday I go to church and then visit my family. My mom makes the fried chicken, and everything is OK. Still, every Sunday morning it has become like a ritual to listen to this song and life feels good.

One of the best, straight from the heart written songs, wonderful composition Kris, and Johnny certainly does it justice with his voice, and heartfelt soul. Regarding the recent passing of Gordon Lightfoot, I saw in an interview, that it was one of his favourite songs also.

The fact he looks up at Chris( the writer) singing “On a Sunday morning sidewalk, im wishin lord that i was stoned” really says a lot about Johnnys character. The abc heads told cash he couldn’t say that line during a practice set because it referred to weed. As we know Cash sung it anyway while looking at the writer( that they sat way back in the theater)

The producers had told Johnny that he must sing “ wishing Lord I was Home “ Kris at the time thought to himself ‘ he just said STONED ‘and was forever grateful to Johnny for not modifying this master piece . Johnny had asked Kris what he wanted him to do and Kris said do what you have to do . This is history and so few know it .Thanks for sharing .
