Many thanks Docs for another great video. I had an elderly friend who broke her fifth metatarsal when she turned in bed. The tightness of the overlying sheet caused the bone to fracture. She was confined to bed for some weeks before she was allowed to start moving. Unfortunately she was never able to walk without a slight limp. All because of an extra tight sheet! This was twenty-five years ago. I’m sure treatment has improved since then

broke mine in zone 1, 8 days ago, and didn't bother to go to a doc for 2 days cause I thought it was a normal sprain (and yes I walked on both feet for those 2 days). Finally went to the doctor's office cause the swelling had increased, was immediately put in a cast, and told to not put pressure on the foot at all. Started walking on both feet after about 5 days cause I feel no pain (or sometimes only a minor pain, like a discomfort) in the foot even thought Im not on any pain meds. Will get another X-ray to see if the foot has healed tomorrow and give you guys an update (like the comment so I remember to).

After a long fall from a rearing horse I broke mine. I was soon allowed to walk carefully after a few weeks so I chose to do it along a trout stream in the Sierra Nevada where I could do an occasional cold soak to keep the swelling down. I'm loving the validation that my Ortho was awful. I was in a knee boot 24/7 and she refused to allow PT while in the boot. She also thought there was no need for PT. I had a trip to Costa Rica 7 weeks after and I was hiking with a cane and very supportive hiking boots. I wasn't going to miss that trip. Wearing supportive shoes, Brooks stability shoes, right out of the boot made a huge difference in pain and balance.

I broke my 5th metatarsal in zone 2 almost a year ago. Thankfully didn’t need surgery but they were going to stick me in a proper cast for 8 weeks until I swore I wouldn’t remove the walking boot hahah. Completely non-weight bearing, used crutches. I was shocked at the state of my foot after it had healed. SO swollen, bruised, flat… all the muscles in my leg had atrophied so it looked MUCH skinnier than my good leg. Started physio and was forced to use a walking cane for a month after having my boot off. It took months of physio to get back to normal walking, rebuilding the arch of my broken foot, getting the mobility back. The swelling and bruising also lasted many months after finishing physio. I’m all good now but even a year later my foot will just randomly swell and hurt, especially if I am on it for long stretches. Anyway, the moral of the story is don’t let yourself become Vit D deficient unless you want brittle bones! All this misery from literally stepping on a bad sidewalk crack. Take your supplements, people!

I fractured my fifth meta seven days ago. While playing volleyball, I landed on someone's foot and turned my left ankle. I heard and felt it pop. The pain took my breath away. I was able to hobble over the hospital, where they confirmed 5th MF. The next day, there was no pain. The day after that, i saw the foot specialist. So it's zone 2/3 jones fracture. 4 weeks in a walking boot, non weight bearing. If healing well🤞i can start to walk and wean off the walking boot. Thanks for the video. It was very informative.

@jadalaajay7144 I was in a walking boot for 7 weeks, non weight bearing. X-ray showed some healing after 7 weeks, so my foot doc gave me the okay to start walking in the boot. I only walked in the boot when I went outside. In my house, I walked around with just a compression sock to help with the swelling. All in all, it took about 9 to 10 weeks until i was fully healed and walking normally.

Up to now he only said to exercise the foot/ankle after a sprain. Made referral to Ortho but they never contacted me…so called them. Terrible clerical handling of a referral. Soonest they can see me is in two weeks. You say we are in control of our healthcare….but that is not true statement in today’s healthcare. Thanks for video. Well done.

Off exact the subject, I broke the 3rd metatarsal, stress fracture going for a simple walk. Pediatrist put me in a boot. Within 2 days, my spinal alignment, gait, balance was thrown so far off I developed pinched nerves in my lower back. Doctor said quit wearing the $180 boot, try a post surgical shoe. Same result. He said the spine would correct itself in a few months. Not. 7 months later, I still have pain across the lower back and down both hamstrings. The foot healed fine with rest, better shoes. Now I need see a neuro surgeon to look at the possible damage to the spine.

Thank you for the explanation. I received a Jones Fracture, 5th metatarsal, non displaced, 2 days ago, and am still in a lot of pain. The only thing the ER doc did was to fit me with an Orthopedic boot. He said this was a non weight bearing break and to STAY off my foot. Well ,... that's been kind of difficult to do. I have an 11 year old daughter, 6 pets, and a man child husband to take care of . None of which are helping me. So of course I fell again , right after taking the boot off because it was hurting my knee from using the knee scooter around the house, and now I'm afraid I've re-injured it. The ER doc referred me to follow up with an Orthopedic, but I have no health insurance. Am I destined for a deformity on my foot if I can't stay off it? How I fell is embarrassing. I was on the Porcelain God, only going number 1, but of course was in the middle of texting on my phone so I didn't get right up from the loo, and when I finally did, apparently my left leg had fallen asleep and lost my balance as I stood up, trying to avoid banging my arm and head against the wall/sink, my body weight went all on my left side, had sandals on, left foot twisted/rolled, and that was it. Bare butt in the air, because I fell before I could pull up my under lovelies, dog freaked out when I cried out in pain, and left my room, so I'm alone on my porcelain tile, bare ass in the air, crying in pain. Now, thx to that same dog, who is a big German Shepard, who pushed me out of the way, causing me to fall again, my foot is swollen 3x the size of my right. I know if I go back to the ER , without insurance, they won't be able to do anything. So, do I just keep icing it, sleep with the boot on, and hire help? My husband isn't capable of taking care of me, let alone our daughter and 5 cats and Demon dog.

Zone 2 5th metatarsal Jones fracture happened in December- luckily was not displaced - had a cast on for 12 weeks and walking boot for a month - just now getting back to walking. The injury was frustrating, but I am very happy I listened to my doctors and took it very slow. Area still gets sore. Elevate the injured foot and stay off it as much as possible. Healing cannot be rushed or the bone will be re-injured -

I injured my left foot fifteen or twenty years ago, and it sure sounds similar to this type of injury. I was throwing a chain while helping another driver tie his dolly onto his fifth-wheel plate, as I stepped forward with my left foot, I felt a pop on the outside of my foot, actually, it was three pops in a row. Afterward, I was unable to push the clutch in to shift with the ball of my foot and had to use my heel to relieve the pain. Now, that side of my left foot is painful and my foot swells a lot. Does this sound like that kind of injury?

Broke my pinky toe a few years ago. Wished I could say it was from mountain climbing, but it was from walking into furniture. Still can’t wear certain shoes/sandals that are not closed in, on the side. When it happened the toe was sitting at greater than a ninety degree angle to the foot . I thought I could just home remedy tape it to the next toe but I ended up having to wear a cast boot to immobilize it, so I could sleep and to protect it from being moved. Wished I sought medical help right away, as it took longer to heal. Toe was harder to heal than a broken arm for me, because it’s harder to immobilize. Thanks so much for covering this topic.

The sesamoid bones are visible under the first metatarsal distal end. Similar in functional anatomy to the patella bone. In bunion situation they rotate with the metatarsal inward and upward to a non functional alignment. Oft taken for granted the foot anatomy is very complex and important to overall health.

I was initially treated by a conservative doctor so was put in a boot for 6 weeks and then indicated to start walking…but the foot was still swollen and painful with no progress on the fracture so I saw another ortho and he suggested an additional 6 weeks in the boot. (And he also questioned why the first doctor didn’t operate the fracture in the first place since the gap was big enough. Also, he said that now it’s too late to operate since the surgery would be more complicated.) Anyway! Now, 3 months later, the jones fracture has made barely any progress, so just started focused shockwave therapy. I’m not sure how long this will take and if surgery would just help more than letting it naturally heal. After all this drama with German doctors, I’d love to hear your opinion on my X-rays if that would be possible!! 😁

This is what I’m afraid of. Been in a post op shoe for about 5.5 weeks, using crutches and non weight bearing. I’m supposed to start walking at 6 weeks, but I’m worried about my healing status. My next x ray follow up is another 2 weeks after I’m supposed to start walking. I’m anxious

I broke my 5th metatarsal bone below what they call the jones fracture, non-displaced, thank God. I appreciate all the good info given here. Currently i am 4 weeks in, 1 week i spent on crutches until I was able to see my ortho, then 3 weeks in the boot. The Aircast boot is so amazing, i feel like could run in it, but if course I dont. So total of 4 weeks and i now can walk around at home without the boot, i go up and down stairs, and do it all slowly. My question is, when can i safely run again? My ortho told me over and over again that i am so healthy and expects a full recovery in 8 weeks. I have another x-ray appointment 6 weeks in. Is it really safe for me to ease unto running at 8 weeks? My BMI is 20.5, i dont smoke or drink ever, and Im a marathoner, gym junkie. I've taken a pharmaceuticals grade bone supplement to help. Reduced my sugar intake and increased my protein intake for healing. I have little to no pain at the time.Just more like a mild discomfort in the area of the fracture. I will start swimming this week (at week 5) to ease back in to it. My question again is, can i safely ease into running at 8 weeks?

In 2007 I fractured 2 metatarsal in the middle of my right foot. Occupational Health sent me over to the ED for an x-ray. I was told there was no fracture, but just a sprain and given orders for PT. I could not tolerate standing and walking. I caught rides to work and used one of the hospital wheelchairs when I got there. It wasn't getting any better. They ordered more PT. I think this only made the fracture worse. I went from November 7th to December 15th before they ever let me get an MRI. Yep. Two fractured metatarsal. I didn't get in to the surgeon's office until December 26th. He placed a hard cast on me. When he took it off, only one of the bones had healed. He sent me to a foot surgeon. He concluded that he could repair it, however, it would leave me with worse arthritis and pain than if we did nothing. Hopefully he didn't just gaslight on this because it was a work injury. This many years later, and I still can't stand on it very long. I need a rollator walker.

I had a "dancer's fracture" to my fifth metatarsal after rolling my foot on a walnut while running downhill. I think had to walk 1.5 miles to my car only putting weight on that heel. There was no pain unless I made a specific movement. I was in a boot 24/7 for 6 weeks. My bone heeled but my foot, angle and hip have never forgiven the time in the boot. Hindsight I should have spent some time out of that boot.

I want to take the opportunity to thank you for the educational materials that you have provided on the youtube channel. It is much appreciated. Question regarding my injury and whether or not if i should consider surgery this coming days. I have a fracture to the fifth metatarsal due to an avulsion in zone #1, with a slight displacement to the left foot while playing tennis recreationally. Want to know the best possible method for my injury. Surgery with risks and benefits or natural healing risks and benefits? From your videos, usually with the zone 1, do not need surgery and let the natural healing process take its course and should start to heal slowly between 6-8 weeks. With this natural method, will the bone fused or not fused with my displacement without surgery intervention, will it causes issues in my mobility once healed, fused, or malunion, etc. If surgery, will it cause discomfort or complication in the future? basically risks & benefits with surgery? thanks in advance for your reply.

In the wrist the scaphoid bone ( somewhat comparable to the foot’s navicular bone) because of its very high percentage of articulation surfaces is limited by necessity to limited blood supply thus making healing a bit problematic and taking extended periods. Our joints and skeletal structures are miraculously designed. In the foot the first metatarsal and its attachment point articulation with the medial cuneiform bone ( distal of the navicular bone) can rotate on its axis to cause a bunion situation. Then the big toe is inclined to shift it’s normal position to a more lateral direction towards the other toes and the metatarsal head creates a bump on the side of the foot. Normal feet are so perfectly aligned and a marvel of interconnecting range of motions. The tendon attachment point on the fifth metatarsal is unique design in the body. Unfortunately it can be somewhat vulnerable to breakage.

I had fractures across multiple toes and a chip fracture on the cunieform, so they had me wear a boot but the swelling continued. Then I was put in a cast which made it difficult to apply ice to ease the swelling and pain. The inflammation spread up my foot to the ankle and lower leg, so when the cast was removed these areas plus the foot and toes were very stiff, inflamed and very painful. My toes had been squished in the cast so now some are misaligned. It shocked me when the doc told me to just start walking in my regular shoes. My foot was stuck in a flexed position that I could not even roll it to walk normally. If I can avoid it, I would never wear a cast again.

On holiday i fell on a step and broke my 5th metatarsal at the base. Didnt know it was fractured until 10 days after the accident when i had an xray and scan done. Went to ED and was put in a moonboot. Saw the trauma clinic last week and was told they recommend i not have surgery even those displaced a little (looks like pac man 😅) as its now too late as its started healing and where the fx is , is not a good place to pin. Fingers crossed 🤞 it continues to heal well. I see the clinic again on 14th june and will see how its all going . The look forward to being able to drive again ! Im in western Australia 😊

I slipped going down our stairs and broke my right foot about 4 years ago but didn’t realize it. About 8 months ago I went to a podiatrist and found out it had broken the bone you’re talking about in this video. I went in due to some pain & discomfort and numbness in the outside edge of my foot. The doctor took X-rays and found out I had broken the bone but didn’t mention I needed surgery when I saw her. Depending on my shoes I wear my right little toe will tend to go somewhat numb as well as the side of my foot going halfway back to my heel. Is this normal? Can anything be done at this point to correct the discomfort and numbness I get or is it most likely too late and I just need to wear good supportive shoes or orthotic shoes?

I have a Jones fracture and have to have surgery to fix it next week. It is unstable, the bone is together when I don't have weight on it but separates when I do have weight on it so my doctor says there is no chance of it healing on its own. Had a regular displaced Jones fracture on my other foot last year and spent 2 months in a cast and 2 months in a walking boot.

I just broke my 5th metatarsal but i am not sure what zone has the fracture. I think zone 1. It is over a week now, no more inflammation and just pain in the area of the broken bone. I have a workshop that I need to attend to on the 26th and I am hoping to be cleared from using my crutches and splint. Do you think I will be fine without crutches and splint if I try to walk slowly on those days? Thank you.

No surgery because it was work comp doctor who worked for the insurance company. 9 months later, walking with pronounced limp. Left hip aches daily from being on crutches so long. Will probably never jog again. A terrible injury. Post traumatic sub taler arthritus has set in. DONT BREAK YOUR HEAL.

@TalkingWithDocs is there a possibility that I "overworked" my broken foot walking from one doctor to X-ray to another (also needed a surgeon consultation for wounds not healing)? I got currently V metatarsal broken in zone one and after 2 weeks with band aid I just got to know it's more than a sprained ankle, and it started to hurt again after these two intensive days. Now I worry if I've already made it worse, since it hurts again 🤦‍♀️
