When I was younger, I would always sprain my right ankle because my right foot had excessive supination. Left foot would always pronate, so it never sprained. When I got older, I had orthotics made for me, which solved the problem. Then, I became a podiatrist. Love the feet and ankles!😊😊😊😊😊

Great information and explanation Docs! This explains so much! I began spraining my ankles when I was in the 8th grade and taking ice skating lessons. The advantage was falling on the ice!(so I thought) As a young adult I slipped on ice (on the ground this time) and sprained my ankle several times in different ways. Then one day I ran up on a curb bending my foot in (much further than it normally goes) and was in terrible pain. I couldn't even walk so I went to the doctor and I was put in a removable cast and had crutches. This was many years ago when they thought immobilization was best. I was in the cast for a few weeks but I could remove it for bathing and such. But I used the crutches the whole time. No one told me that women were more susceptible to ankle sprains after having one. Of course they may have not known that back then. But I've sprained my ankles more than the average person should. Perhaps this is why I have so much trouble balancing now.🤔 Well that and the different length of each leg. I think the most lasting thing I gained from ice skating was weak ankles. But I think I stopped spraining them by the time I was in my 30's. Yeah, I was the kid who broke her leg at age 5. Most of my sprains were fine with ice and elevation. Just once did I have to go to the doctor for more treatment. I've never been the most graceful person but maybe lucky enough for it to not be more serious. Mystery solved! About ankle sprains anyway but not necessarily about being a klutz.😉 Thanks for sharing another great video!👍

Sprained my ankle stepping off a curb (no I wasn't texting). My foot was so swollen it looked like Fred Flintstone's foot!! Of course it was also the winter which made getting around on the ice and snow a challenge. Thanks for the great video.

Years ago during a volleyball game, I was playing center and jumped up to net to block a spike. Big guy on other side jumped at same time but landed on other side of net on top of my leg. My ankle was broken from impact. Ouch. Great video on ankles.

Slipped getting off a boat whilst wearing my diving gear, on my way back to the car. I managed to get it all back to the car with help and drive home around 2 hours. Next day my foot was swollen massively, took around 2 years until it felt close to normal even after physio. Now 15 years on I walk a fair bit and it is mostly okay.

Awesome information! What a complex injury that can be. i just returned from my annual snowbird destination in San Miguel de Allende Mexico. It is also known as “the city of falling women”! Not kidding! Because of the cobblestone roads and uneven stone side walks and women wanting to wear their stylish high heels - spikes, pumps, high wedges, or even crazy platforms or slip-ones, there are a lot of accidents so we see many hobbles with crutches, ankle boots and even broken wrist, arms, clavicles and bruised faces from trying to break their falls. Even the men are falling and disco boots are no longer in fashion for guys. I’d add to this very in-depth and informative segment, that we need to remember to also wear sensible footwear, not only when vacationing in historical UNESCO countries, but even around our own streets and cities where even a simple stone or pebble can cause a fall - I admit that it happened to me once in a pair of wedge slip-ones and my left ankle is now chronically an inch bigger in circumference and my right so I learned this lesson the hard way. Also PLEASE, stop looking at your cell phones while walking along!. That distracts and interferes with your proprioception and attention to your surroundings.Cheers and thank you for all of your great videos about how to take care of our own health.

Sorry to hear this. This is a very specific type of bony tumour. We would need to get an Orthopedic oncologist and unfortunately there are none at our hospital.

On 29th May 1987 I fell down 2 steps and hurt my right ankle badly and I went to the hospital because my foot was 3 times its normal size and turned black and blue. I was told it was a bad sprain and to try and rest it for a couple of days, I could not walk or put weight on it at all. I got married 10 weeks later and my foot was still a bit swollen and sore. Even now 37 years later I still suffer with my foot swelling and giving on me when the weather is cold, I wear a ankle support when the pain is very bad.

After dozens of left ankle sprains, I had to have my ATFL reattached. This was done as part of another surgery to repair my peroneal brevis tendon, not as a primary surgery. My ankle has not been this stable in decades.

I badly sprained my ankle about 17 yrs or so ago. My whole foot and ankle went black. Dr sent me to hospital for X-rays. Referred me to physio. I put an elastic bandage on it and that helped me so much for walking. (Do you have bloopers videos?).

Ever since I was small I would sprain my ankles. From the very first time where my foot fell asleep when I was in 5th grade watching a movie in the gym. I stood up tried to walk but fell right down on my right ankle which that was during Christmas vacation break. Which know both of my feet would turn in and I would fall right down. When I get home from work I would put on my ankle brace support plus ice and then I would start to move it in circles and counterclockwise also..

I am really liking these vids with the foot specialist. I just wanted to point out that a factoid does not mean the same as a fact. I am pretty sure you were talking about actual facts (something proven to be true) and not factoids (something that isn't true but is repeated so frequently that it is believed to be true). I'm genuinely not trying to be annoying. I just wanted to clarify as I was initially confused by the first fact you presented, thinking it was indeed a factoid. Anyway, keep up the good work, docs! :)

In 1972, I had surgery to repair a ligament (or tendon?) that allowed my ankle to dislocate while walking. The doctor showed me how the ligament/tendon would slip over the protruding bone that formed the outside of my ankle. This was due to repeated sprains that began in 1969. The surgery seemed to work because I could then walk without a brace. However, since 2008, I've had four minor breaks and one major break of this same ankle. Would the repeated injuries be related to the 1969-1972 injuries? And would it have been a ligament or a tendon?

Great timing. I went skiing March 7th and a couple days afterwards I started having ankle pain on the outside of my left ankle. I’m trying to strengthen it but if I move it outward, like in the direction of a rolled ankle, the pain is severe. Not much swelling so I’m not sure what is going on. Should I email my doctor or give it more time? It’s been a little over 6 weeks.

I'm still trying to get full range of movement after a bad sprain almost 5 months ago. I'm not sure what the sprain grade is, I only saw my Dr initially because I wanted to be sure I wasen't causing harm by still being on it. Now 5 months seems like a long time and considering getting it rechecked.

I hurt my ankle about 5 weeks ago. It was swollen and bruised from the ankle to the toes. And what is weird is the top of the foot, around the outer ankle and half way to the knee is still numb. I now know why I never had pain. I suppose I should have seen a doctor. 🙄 I did do ice, rest, elevate and an air splint which I still have from the last time I hurt this ankle. Oh well, such is life in the fast lane.
