Fun fact: Muaythai was invented around the mid of 16th century in Ayutthaya period of Siam. (some says it can be traced back to 13th century). It developed from the battlefield tactics to make the soldiers as effective and deadly as possible, even without weapons. Muaythai is known as the “art of eight limbs” for the eight parts of the body that are used for striking and knock out the opponent: (for example fists, elbows, knees, and feet. etc.) This is the reason why Muaythai is so deadly powerful and brutal! (Recommend to watch Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior starring by Tony Jaa)

Regrettably, this is just a hype propaganda for ancient muaythai. A student of ancient muaythai cannot fight a modern sport muaythai. Just as Jack Dempsy would be minced by Evander Holyfield. Martial arts have progressed much.

@@amartya9034 Dempsey was very good , for his period. But boxing evolved and progressed since then. Sonny Liston was far better than Dempsey. Yet Cassius Clay defeated Sonny Liston very convincingly.

Kickboxing is Pretty much Punches Above the Waist only, Knee Strikes above The Waist, Kicks To the Legs up to the Head, And Where Clinches are immediately reset after a single clean knee strike. Muay thai Punches above the waist, Elbows above the waist, Knee Strikes to the Legs (quadracep) up to the head, The Clinches Are Extremely allowed to the Point that Knee strikes inside the Clinch of Muay Thai Bouts are Freaking Brutal, Abd Also Elbows while in the Clinch and Foot Sweeps are Allowed!!! there is a huge variety of boxing styles (mexican, peek-a-boo, american, british, cuban, soviet etc.) and kickboxing styles (japanese, dutch, american, chinese, thai etc.). in the end whatever works for you the best.

I always thought of it like this: Kickboxing is a sport, and Muay Thai is a martial arts style. In kickboxing, karate, kung fu, and yes Muay Thai guys can fight in whatever the ruleset for that organization is.

There's a type of Muay Thai which is almost identical to Dutch Kickboxing called Muay Mat, it accommodates Thai fighters that love to punch.

I have a question, first off I love both Muay Thai and Kickboxing there’s a lot to gain from both, and you really can’t go wrong with either. Now that I got that out the way, Joe mentioned that KB focuses more on head movement as opposed to Muay Thai, which is definitely a boxing component. My question is what about foot work?? KB focuses more on footwork and head movement as opposed to MT right??

Youll see a lot more simple and relaxed shuffle steps in MT. In thai rules, when they ger in close range theyll duck their feet to avoid sweeps and knees when they clinch. Like joe said its just a bit slower which means they wont be doing a lot of more technical stuff.

he is talking specifically if a muay thai fighter wants to try to fight within kickboxing rules where he cant use the clinch. In a real fight yeah the kickboxer gets decimated in close range by the clinch from the muay thai guy

No, that's not true. Thai boxing scores kicks first, that means you usually want to stay away if you can. Also, it's hard to get through those kicks and teeps. But the stance doesn't allow for such sophisticated footwork and also it's more of a tactical game, where you dominate the space. Kickboxing doesn't allow many techniques and also the kicks aren't that utilized because of that. Dutch style kickboxing for example focuses on big bombs and hard low kicks with little stuff besides that. If you're a kickboxer you want to go in ,use your speed, especially for the body shots and avoid the clinching. It's pretty hard to catch a fast kickboxer. It's also hard to hit a knee or elbow if he knows what he's doing. Eventually you'll hit him and catch him ,and then you can deliver the pain, but the kicking technique is much better in muay thai, also the stance suits it way better.

Kickboxing dominates K1 now, and Glory from light heavyweight to heavyweight dominate and only the featherweight division is dominated by Petch, and he had to improve his boxing to do that lol. K1, Rise based on Japanese kickboxers. Glory US kickboxer. But when Muay Thai fought with these kickboxers they were dominated with long run streak. One = Rodtang, Superbon, Sittichai Petchtanong. Glory = Petchpanomrung, Sittichai. K1 = Buakaw, Kaew fairtex, Kongnappa, Kaoklai Rise = Petchpanomrung. These Muay Thais dominated Kickboxing. They have excellent pace and boxing skill than any kickboxing in those country and they are not slow at all.
