When I was a boy my mother made a coffee cake from a recipe on the side of a Special K cereal box. One year we moved and the recipe was lost. She tried to find it again but never did. It's 50-plus years later and I'm still looking for that recipe. Along the way I have, however, found many other excellent coffee cakes... like yours!

This has to be the most universally loved snack/dessert. Switch out the vanilla for almond; change the nuts; add cardamon -- a guaranteed crowd pleaser. We like to slice them up into individual pieces and freeze them to take to work. Please keep bringing us variations to try. My mother used to make Tea Cake for afternoon tea. It usually had melted butter, cinnamon and sugar on top after it was baked. Tea was not an ingredient of that either !

I had low expectations because we didn't have walnuts, we didn't have chocolate chips, we didn't even have sour cream, only 2/3 cup of some organic cream cheese with a softer texture, but decided to go for it anyway. Then to top it off I realized I was using a 10" springform pan instead of a 9" one so I was worried it would be flat and crispy. Well, it came out delicious anyway! Half the cake eaten in one day by 2 people! Great recipe!

Good Day Steph, as a kid my only exposure to Coffee Cake was the packaged Aunt Jemima coffee cake mix that you mixed all the ingredients in a plastic bag and poured into an oven proof paper type pan topped with packaged crumb topping. You should only use the lower heating element unless the recipe specifically calls for the broiler (top) element.
