+adrian forrester I mainly video while removing bees but take short clips when I'm fooling with them later on doing checks & maintenance. I'll have to do a full video sometime in my main yard, lots of people requesting that. So for now, more removal videos will be coming & likely one of a pregnant armadillo readying her nest. That one will be short but interesting nonetheless.

Another great video. You guys know your stuff! Any stings taken? The heat detector is a great idea: prevents accidentally disturbing the hive or killing bees, with the painful results. It's amazing the difference between these bees and africanized bees: with africanized bees, with the first vibration or noise from the vacuum and you guys would have been bee stinger deposit boxes, lol. Look forward to more videos.

+CharlieX I'm sure we both took more than a few stings on this one, I know I did! I suit up when they're really aggressive! Check out "Monastery Bees Get Pissy" these were incredibly aggressive when performing the removal. Had to tell all the Sisters of the monastery to "stay inside!"

Hi JP, first of all, I love you channel! It's entertaining and educational. Here in New Zealand, feral hives have been basically wiped out by the Varroa mite. What problems do you have with this mite? Small and large hive Beatles? American foul brood? I'm constantly amazed at them amount of feral hives you rescue!

+Rod Bowler as long as the colonies are queen right with good numbers they tend to keep shbs at bay. The feral colonies here fair pretty well against Varroa. I don't treat so I'm all about utilizing survivor stock. I've seen para-foul brood & American foul brood before in other southern states but not in my colonies or in any feral colonies I've dealt with.

That was an awesome tid-bit about Schawee! I wondered if that was a nickname or his real last name. I figured a nickname was more likely, but I didn't know what it meant. Cool deal! My mother's side of the family are all French, but almost all of them are gone now and no one taught me any French. I can say a few things I used to hear my mother say when she got annoyed with us, but I can't spell any of it. Nice banjo pickin at the end.

If you know a rancher that goes through a lot of hay or straw ask them to save you the natural jute twine that binds the bales together. Well oiled jute twine makes the best smoker fuel there is! Smolders for long periods of time and puffs to life fast! Just don't mistake the plastic for natural twine.

I removed a colony from the floor of a children's playhouse about seven years ago & caught nine queens from that colony. That was the most ever.

Not to be unkind , however I am glad you do not do many removals with Schawee because when he is working the bees he kind of reminds me of a bull in a china shop when Schawee was catching up the queen off that piece of wood he didn’t care if he squinched some of the girlfriends geez. Thank you though for capturing these bees and moving them to a place where they can live out the rest of their lives w/o worry they will be poisoned or have their home knocked down . Oh and thank you for the info about the bee cross and what that annoying sound was . I’m so happy we don’t have those things in the city I live in .

Love watching your vides. I did my first removal this last year and unfortunatly checked them this last week and with the snow and cold weather we are having this year they didn't make it. +fenlinfoel your best bet would be to find local bees that have adapted to your environment. Our bees may not thrive in your neck of the woods as we think 40 degrees F is the equivalent of hell freezing over :-)

Wish I could get some of those bees. The watermelons in my garden last summer were pear shaped. I was told by an expert that the blossoms did not get enough pollination, so part of the fruit was misshapen from under pollination.

+Sher Thom bees should help with that. There's likely more than a few beekeepers out there that would be willing to place some hives on your watermelon patch. A good buddy of mine in Lake City, Florida pollinates watermelons with his bees every season.

Ethan G great question! Honey bees seem to be limited as to what materials they can actually chew through but I have seen them chew through soundboard, spray foam, rotten wood & 3 mil contractor bags.

LOL When you vacuum hives and there are multiple colonies like this job, you have to be extremely careful which bees you suck into the boxes together, correct? I'm guessing the bees would fight and try to kill each other if you vacuumed too many from two different (or three, four, etc.) hives into the same bee vac box?

Pamela Schramke ordinarily, combining worker bees from different colonies may not be the best thing to do but when they become displaced inside of a bee vac box the last thing on their mind is infighting. It's the same thing as when putting together packages of bees. In the end they really just want to be part of a queenright colony.

BIG removal job! Fantastic job as always on this one! I do have a question. When I first decided I want to get my first bees this coming year, I was only planning to get one nuc. Now that I've spent a few weeks researching honey bees and keeping them, I've learned that's NOT the most brilliant idea. I want NO MORE than a TOTAL of 2-3 hives on my property because I'm in the city (for now but will hopefully move out to a more private area within the next few years) and I just don't have the room for too many hives and we do have neighbors all around us. Would it be safe to start with two nucs? I'm thinking I can at least trade frames, queens, etc as needed between the two to hopefully keep them going well if something happens. Are there others who are always interested in bees if I need to split and give bees away because I just don't have the property for them? My other thought that I'm looking into is having different locations I can keep the bees. There is a nature preserve an 1/8th mile down the road from our home and it's a huge area with a river running through it, and it's partially huge meadow and partially wooded. I'm thinking that could be BEE HEAVEN since it's all natural and filled with native wildflowers. Once I start with my bees, I am hoping I can contact the city to get permission to put some hives out there. Is that a feasible and reasonable idea in your opinion. I would be very close to the bees and can check on them regularly if they are there. Thank you so much for your time, JP! 😉

Pamela Schramke your thinking is spot on. It's always advisable to begin with 2 colonies. It shouldn't be difficult to find others in your area that would take in any splits you'd care to give or sell them. Best wishes!

Question? You had 3 bee hives can you vacuum bees from all 3 hives into one box? Then take the queens and put them in 3 different boxes would the bees accept the queen eventhough they are from 3 different hive? I hope I explained myself correctly

When putting together “packages” of bees, bees are routinely taken from several hives & given a completely different queen so yes, your scenario if done right can work.

+ted withal my state has only had 8 documented cases of AHBs since June of 05. I am not particularly concerned about them just yet. Your locale may be a different story altogether. Requeening any consistently aggressive colony with a mated queen of gentle stock should always be a high priority.

+Dark Jesus actually that little swarm you mentioned was from one of the colonies we removed & she was reunited with the rest of her colony the following day. She was from the one on the front end of the building. I believe Schawee found the third queen the following day as well, we must have vacuumed her up.

Raccoon in french is "raton laveur", I think "Schawee" is the americanized version of the word "cheri", which sounds similar to "Schawee" and is something a person would call a pet or little child.

+Silvermoonacres they're definitely more aggressive in nature (at least the ones in my area are) than Italian bees but are pretty dang good producers. They build tons of queen cups but also tear them down regularly as well. I would recommend getting a few & see how they work out for you.

So let's try copy and paste. -- From what I've read, pure Russians are as calm as Italians. But when they cross with other varieties, the aggression factor is a hit or miss. I don't know how often the aggression shows. I've read so many mixed opinions. Some people love them, some hate them. I personally think it's just a factor of finding the good ones and using them to replace the bad ones. I've also read about the queen cups. I know in an Italian hive, this is a sign of problems. But totally normal for Russians. But all the reading in the world isn't quite the same as personal experience. Thank you for your answer and your time.

Definitely would agree with your assessment. I've seen Russians that were very gentle, but more that were on the aggressive side but like you said hybridization should be factored into the equation.

I also happen to enjoy background music in some of the footage devoid of the bee vac noise. If you simply want a visual, you might want to mute the sections that contain music.
