I was born in Hartford and grew up in Vernon until we moved to Colorado in ‘91. My folks had a cottage on Misquamicut beach that they’ve since sold in 2008. Man watching this kind of fishing brings back such great memories. I grew up fishing “the race” and “plum gut”. I haven’t been back east in over a decade but this makes me nostalgic. I’ve got to get back there soon.

Hey John, Ever keep any weakfish when they're big enough to feed you all at home? What's the minimum size for a real meal? What's the allowed amount? One, I think? I loved them filleted, seasoned breadcrumbed and fried in oil and butter! Haven't had any in decades! I probably wouldn't keep any either and hold out for something a little bigger despite craving them for so long. Ever get Monkfish in the deeper water areas? You really had a great day there. No I'm not jealous! LOL You must keep the Grumman somewhere around Southold. Perfect! Right in the middle of finding what's running every day. Keep them coming. Such a great way to get outside and ignore mind wasting technology.

Hey John. I've been looking into getting more flutter spoons. The past two trips out of moriches using them have caught me more and bigger bass than using live bait or bucktailing. Wondering if you have a link for a variety of sizes. I'm using 3.5 ounce spoons, seems like if I get ones that are a little heavier I can control them better drifting through the inlet.

Did the striper bite in the bay die ? I’m finally getting a chance to get out there this Friday. In the Gut, you’re usually drifting the other direction aren’t you ? Are you getting fish in approximately the same area of the drift? If so why not just anchor up?
@JohnSkinnerFishing5 ай бұрын
The current runs 2-5+mph here. If you were able to anchor up, it would take a lot of weight to get to the bottom because the current would carry your rig away, and nearly impossible to make a good presentation. Also, as the video shows, this is a drift fishing area with numerous other boats drifting through. Imagine what would happen to someone anchoring in the middle of a drifting fleet in a small area like this. Good question.

Can I ask why the barrel swivel for that setup? Wouldn't it make more sense for the same length leader if not longer with a uni or FG knot so you're not smacking the swivel in the guide since you're not netting? or is it just preference to use the barrel swivel.
@JohnSkinnerFishing5 ай бұрын
It's my preference for avoiding the braid to fluoro knot and to give some line twist reduction.
