There was not much controversial reception to The Last of Us Part 2 outside of some snowflake hysteria about the leaks. More Game of the Year awards than any other game in history, ten million plus in sales, 93 on metacritic, and obviously enough succcess for Sony to bet on the series more than any other series. Just because some hysterical babies online got upset about girls kissing and review-bombed the thing doesn't take anything away from the near uniformity of the approval it got outside of the more sensitive corners of the web

You're sure 10m copies sold is profitable? Well let's go ahead and go the extra mile: TLOU2's budget was 200m (100m production, 100m marketing), this is already a bloated budget for a videogame. However, a full-priced AAA copy of a videogame only brings 14 bucks for the developer, the rest going to distribution and publisher costs. That brings us to only 140m for 10m, which is not profitable given the bloated budget. But that's not all: This is 10m *lifetime* sales, meaning not all copies were sold at full-price. Some weren't even sold for any price given it went free on PSN for a time, meaning that number only goes lower. Now: Pair this with Sony's unreasonable expectations for games, where Days Gone is considered a failure despite having sold *exponentially over their budget.* Kinda shows why Naughty Dog's game projects are being handed to other studios now. Funny enough, despite being a "failure," the Days Gone studio was trusted with the latest remaster of TLOU. They needed Avengers-level returns on an Avengers-level budget, instead they sold as poorly as the Avengers videogame. But it doesn't stop there: Why don't we bring up that the latest remaster sold *worse* than the Saints Row reboot, likely as a direct result of this game's abysmal performance. We're still reaching the same conclusion, that there's dismal times ahead for Naughty Dog under Neil Druckmann, but the results of his leadership are *immediate.* They're hemorrhaging money, and if Part 3 has a similar budget to TLOU2, it'll be a legendary embarrassment. *And no TLOU2 fan will bring numbers to contradict this.*

I do really like the way Neil Druckmann tells a story. You see it not only in The Last of Us. But also Uncharted 4. But Neil has also attached himself to a few toxic cultural topics that highly divide people. Not only has he attached himself to those topics. He also makes the arguments as poorly as they do. But I still love how they tell their stories. The mechanics have improved so much over the years. Their graphics and attention to detail have been top notch. So in my opinion, Sony needs Naughty Dog to back away from the toxic toppics. More specifically Neil Druckmann needs to be told to back away from those toxic topics. Then, Naughty Dog can start the move back to its once great status.

TLOU2 is a failure, as much as Sony and Game Journos tried their best to fake its success, the sales number speaks otherwise for which the game goes on sale more times than a game like Far Cry 6. Also, TLOU Re-remastered was such a failure that people forgot about it as soon as it was released that Saints Row reboot had more numbers than that game. For some reason, Sony still panders to ND and Druckmann as if there are no other talented devs in their arsenal I know sales numbers cant translate quality but the Best of the all-time game struggling to win people's hearts and convince them to purchase is very much odd

Naughty Dog burned a lot of bridges in the chase of the mythical modern audience. Like Star Trek did, like Star Wars did, like any modern adaptation did. Really don't care about TLoU as a brand anymore, the HBO series looks like it will be also adapted for the modern audience. Uncharted had nice wholesome ending so again, don't care when they reboot or remake it. So only new IP can bring back any interest toward Naughty Dog.

I am one of the people who never actually asked for a sequel to TLOU. The first game worked perfectly as a standalone experience. Not everything needs to be a franchise. There are three main reasons I refuse to appreciate TLOU2. First, it's the crunch. I will never understand how this game won the Best Game Direction when it got leaked before it released and Druckmann forced his employees to overwork 100+ hours on the game, thus causing employees to leave the company. If you defend something like this, you are not a good person. Second, the story was done with favoritism rather than using logic. Joel's death was never the problem, it's the way it was set up. The fanboys will always use the excuse of "He got soft for five years, which why he is trusting strangers now" but it seems like they forget that Stranger Danger is relevant no matter the setting, the time and the location. Abby never did anything for Joel and Tommy to earn her trust. I'd take "show, don't tell" over exposition anyday. Also, Abby's campaign feels like it could have been done without Joel and Ellie involved. Most of the events have nothing to do with them. Thirdly, this game did nothing new, both gameplay wise and story. What new things did they add within the gameplay? A jump button? Been a thing since Mario and it's so useless in this game. Going prone? Metal Gear Solid 3 did it first. Dodging? God of War would like to have a word with ya. The story itself is just a boring revenge story which steals the plot concept from Silent Hill 3 and the risks from Metal Gear Solid 2. The game isn't necessarily bad but it never deserved the high reception. I will never listen to critics ever again and you shouldn't too.

I didn't play the game but your take is similar to my conclusion based on what I've heard and read, perhaps except for the gameplay which many think is good. I would've given TLOU2 a chance, but Druckman's arrogant marketing, aggressive woketivism and his fanboys turned me off (though disgruntled gamers also played a significant role in adding toxicity to the controversy).

@@EyobFitwi I didn't say the gameplay wasn't good. It's just nothing original. It's the same as the first game, but with a jump mechanic, prone and dodging. That's pretty much it. The gameplay can be a lot of fun, no matter if it's new or old.
@DaPeasant
@DaPeasant 2 жыл бұрын
What new gamplay mechanic would you suggest? A character that levitates constantly? They shoot out their mouth instead of a gun? I mean I understand your argument if someone says "we've never seen a character go prone before". But people say those things are new to the TLOU franchise, not gaming in general and are an improvement on the gameplay and world exploration of the original. An example is the semi open settings in part 2, they are an absolute master stroke on how to make improvements on a previous installment. Is that concept original? No. I'm not defending the narrative of part 2, but to say its gameplay isn't an improvement on the first is flat out incorrect in my opinion. Besides, what is fresh and new these days? If you live by your reasons to hate on TLOU 2 because it "stole" ideas from other games, then you should be applying that to 99% of any art created. It all steals ideas from something that came before. Without that we wouldn't have great movies, tv shows, games, podcasts, books, etc releasing as regularly as it does. What is important is to continue acknowledging the sources an artist borrows from, but not say something is crap because of that practice.

They deliberately lied and false advertised a game knowing full well that people would not be on board with their ideas so they attempted to dupe people into buying something that was not as advertised. This was not simply hiding story beats, this was intentional false advertising. This shows that Naughty Dog and by extension Sony Studios have absolutely no respect for their customers or trust in their brand/product. How can you believe anything they tell you moving forward when they have shown they have no qualms about lying to you to get you to buy their products? Not to mention their absolute dismissal of any critisism valid or otherwise since release. They don't give a shit about their customers and anything they say otherwise is pure BS damage control.

One thing I really hated about people’s defense of tlou2’s story was how they said Joel doomed humanity by killing Abby’s dad and not letting Ellie’s operation go though which justified Abby killing him. Like the world is already way past gone by that point. There’s groups like the seraphites, a crazy cult, and the wolves, a crazy and ruthless paramilitary, and murderers and thieves hiding and living in cities and towns that kill other survivors that go through their territory. Plus a cure wouldn’t even cure the hundreds of millions or even billions of infecteds still roaming the world. Also I doubt much people would even care for a cure because by that point every human would most likely be part of a faction that would be more focused of taking care of their own.
@dorkangel1076
@dorkangel1076 2 жыл бұрын
The story (or part of it) is just the Fireflies view of it and their view is valid to them and reflected in their actions. They all felt Joel deserved it because of the cure but without Abby's driving force they wouldn't have bothered after 4 years. Abby was the driving force because for her it wasn't about the cure, it was about her dad which is why Ellies revelation in the Theatre has little effect on her. For her, it was never about the cure or Ellie (who tends to blame everything on herself being immune). Nothing has changed about the original story. At the end of the game we can have the same discussion over the merits of Joels decision. The only difference is we have a little more context on the Fireflies that we didn't see in the first game. Aa an aside, anyone who got bitten would certainly care about a cure.

I have this conversation a lot about the game and think this is something that has to be recognized if you are to enjoy this incredible tale to the fullest extent. By hypercomplicating and postulating on the merits of what the fireflies WOULD and COULD do with a cure, you lessen the impact of the moral dilemma the first game pulls off. I always urge fans to stop focusing on using current world logic and hypotheticals and instead take the story as it is; Joel makes a complicated decision at the end of the first game. Is it right? That's not a yes or no question, the complexity IS the point. As people I think we always search for a definite answer, but if there was one we wouldn't really care much about the game would we? You can assume the Fireflies would weaponize the cure, you could probably support your claim, but truth is we don't know what would happen.

@@kieranarmstrongproductions4743 Good point. I see it as a version of the needs of the many vs the needs of the one and what if that one was someone you really cared about. The doctor and Joel were stuck on opposite sides of a terrible dilemma with no happy outcome. No Ellie or no cure. Arguing whatsboutery over what the Fireflies might do is just the other side of what Marlene tries with Joel. What if Joel saves Ellie then she gets killed by a clicker or murdered by hunters. No Ellie and no cure. To me weaponising the cure would be poisoning it and it giving to your enemies. Using it as a bargaining chip in some sort of ceasefire or treaty is a perfectly reasonable proposition which benefits everyone.

Saying their artworks are being stolen or style framed by another user. That being said...no style is copyrighted. Artists take the likeness as inspiration from each other for years. So without knowing the real information behind that...applies to people saying bad things about a company or directly to individual people with Hate mail. Which is worse? A bad storyline if you see fit or an uproar of fake news propaganda to sell a bigot storyline...

At the heart is Neil's being disingenuous to the established lore and used his godly powers to break established characters just to fulfill his narrative. Joel can definitely die but in way that honors his existing character and wit. All you need is to create another scenario where Ellie learnt the truth, got emotional, put herself in danger, Joel again wrecked havoc but sacrificed himself at the end to save Ellie's life and finally earned her forgiveness. Player expect the story to be of high quality like the first one and Neil disappointed us.

Yeah please, make a cheap Hollywood movie out of TLOU, that’s being true to the established lore.. you guys are funny, saying that the guy who created the lore isn’t true to it, because yeah, it isn’t what you liked it to be. Part II, Joel’s Death, is as grimm and dissatisfieng as the world of TLOU always was, that’s how reality is. No NPC that Joel or Ellie kill in these games gets a honorable death, why should they then be a exception? Had Joel’s daughter a honorable Death? And why would he in a world like this, killing so many people? That’s not how things work in a world like this. Saying the story is garbage is garbage. You could say you don’t like it or it didn’t hold up to the first one or something like that, but to say it’s garbage is just showing that your „opinion“ on these things isn’t worth much. And I can tell you it is for me one of the emotionally most challenging storys in a game till now, and a lot of people will tell you the same thing. You probably let yourself distract from bullshit others tried to convince of, but that is on you, cause you missed something really special because of this. The thing is the story isn’t what some fans expected, but it’s what made sense in the cruel world of TLOU, and that’s how you stay true to your art. As far as I'm concerned, Naughty Dog is dead. Don't think there's anything they could do that would make me buy their games anymore. First, the Naughty Dog formula, as brilliant as it is, and as polished as it got, is played out. Both in terms of gameplay and narrative scenarios. That in itself is enough to kill a studio if it can't find a way to reinvent itself. But ND has a worse problem, ideology. Its a one-two punch. To be honest, I think I’m just kinda done with The Last of Us. Naughty Dog has always delivered on quality games, but Part 2 just kinda diminished any eagerness I have towards anything new they have coming. I don’t hate Part 2, but I didn’t really like it & I’m sick of the “hardcore fan people” giving others crap for completely justified thoughts. The gameplay was fun as hell. But the story was meh. And my opinion is not because of Joel dying or a lesbian relationship or that there’s a trans character in the game. Those are stupid ass reasons to hate the story or the game. The game, for me, just failed to make me give a shit about Abby and broke down characters that the first game established so well. Joel dying was expected. But I fully expected that it would happen down the line rather than the very beginning as the marketing made it seem that Joel would be with you on this adventure until Ellie found out more about the truth & eventually there’s a snap. I get Abby’s motivations, but if I’m thinking the whole time during Abby’s sections “am I done playing Abby yet?”, then your story is failing to make me care. That’s just a me opinion. This game was a lot of character destruction for the ones I cared about and a lot of poor execution of trying to make me care about the new ones. If Part 3 is coming, I’m going to wait for it to go on sale or something rather than eagerly buy it. I don’t know how they’re going to make a Part 3 if I’m honest. But if anything, ND just doesn’t give me the same excitement it used to when it comes to new games anymore. Like if my fear of TLOU PS5 Remake is Them making some attempt to redo the story, that’s a bad sign.

I honestly didn't enjoy TLOU Pt 2. While the gameplay was fun I just didn't care for the story nor how it was told. And like you said, I had a different picture in my head of what pt 2 was gonna be based on the trailers they put out and when I played it I felt like I was lied to. What made the first LOU game so good was the relationship between Joel and Ellie and I wanted another chapter with them especially after what Joel did at the end of the first game. But we didn't get that, instead Joel is killed two hours into a 25-30 hour game and then we get a couple of flashbacks with him, which were the best part of the whole damn game. Not to mention we play his murderer for the second half of the game and she basically gets a bargain brand version of the first game's story, almost like it was a reboot. As for what ND could do to bring me back...I'm honestly not sure. I'd rather for them not to do a pt 3 and just let it die and maybe do a brand new IP but even then I'd be worried about that too. If they did do a pt 3...maybe if it was focused on completely different characters and maybe even set in a different country during the Apocalypse would be interesting and maybe I'd be back on but as long as Neil Druckmann is still involved with ND, I will be way more cautious than I was before.

Naughty Dog killed off the best part of the franchise, which was the relationship between Ellie and Joel. They abandoned everything that people loved about the first game to bring some kind of shitty Walking Dead plot. It's like their sole focus was making the sequel dark and edgy instead of directing their focus onto a great story with good characters. Every character in TLOU2 was super annoying as if everyone was some kind of young, liberal, college student in the middle of a damn apocalypse. The best part of the game was the flashbacks of Ellie and Joel between segments. It makes me wonder why the hell they didn't just make the whole fucking game like that. Instead of flashbacks, it could have just been presented in present day, with the story going from there. I rank TLOU2 as one of the worst sequels of all time. It played fine, it looked amazing, but it lacked everything that made the original so good... a good story. I made it about 80% through the game and I just couldn't even finish it. I ended up watching the ending on KZbin and it was just horrendous. A part of me says Part 3 can't be any worse, but if they keep that same Walking Dead vibe, and the same whiny ass character design, then I'll have to pass. Although, I already have little hope since they killed off the best part of the game.

Last of Us 2 was what made me lose all interest in future Naughty Dog games. I genuinely felt like they turned their back on me and were intentionally trying to convince me not to be a fan because I'm not one of those woke lunatics that favor representation over a good story with good characters and good writing. Last of Us 2 had some of the worst pacing, unlikable characters, and writing I've ever seen; and no it's not because Joel died, Ellie's gay, a buff roided woman, or a trans person being involved. I've got zero interest in a Part 3, the only exception was if it were a prequel or a completely new story with new characters. I have no interest in what happens to Ellie or Abby and Lev.

But as the months turned to years more hate was built up and we saw that with the low revenue in Solo, Rise of Skywalker and the D+ series - last Jedi killed the Star Wars franchise. Great vid Robin, very much agree with your view on the situation concerning Naughty dog's next game. It's going to be very interesting to see how they handle it, given the fact TLOU2 was both hated and loved by equal sections of the audience, it makes you wonder how they can tackle part 3 without pissing off one or the other. If you continue with Abby, the people that loved part 2 will stick around but the rest will abandon ship even more. If you continue with Ellie and completely ignore Abby and not make her involved, that will look very bad because it's implicitly admitting part 2 was a mistake they wish to walk back from, which i don't think they would want to do because it will make them look very bad. you'll also alienate those who liked part 2, and maybe you'll get some of the old fans back on board, maybe? Idk if that's possible to do given how Joel isn't there anymore. It's quite the dilemma, TLOU3 needs to somehow pull a legendary comeback and miraculously please both the new fans who liked the direction of part 2, but also earn back the trust and love of the old fans who hated part 2. And idk if that is possible, i don't think there's a way to achieve such a result with any direction they end up taking. The closest mirror to this situation i can think of is Metal Gear Solid. MGS1 with Solid Snake was loved by a lot of people. MGS2 comes out with Raiden being the main lead deceiving the audience, which left most fans annoyed. Then MGS3 had to earn back that audience and somehow please fans that liked MGS2 and the ones that didn't. They make MGS3 a prequel about big boss and side step that whole dilemma of the Snake vs Raiden thing entirely and people love it. Naughty dog can't take the prequel route tho, since unlike solid snake, they killed Joel, so anything that's a "prequel" in the story will be pointless and not that interesting, and potentially can even backfire on them since it will highlight the mistakes of part 2 even further. It's quite the challenge honestly. I wonder how they'll end up handling it.
@RobinGaming

Very well put! It's indeed gonna be fascinating to see which direction they take. I didn't even touch on that much in this video but I think you summed up the dilemma very well.

They can make a prequel about Joel and/or Tommy’s life before the events of the first game, how they survived etc. Rogue One should be a pointless movie but it did that very successfully with a very weak premise. But it would need to be a story with a static protagonist if Joel is the lead since we know how he ends, or end up the way he started, something that might work or might feels pointless if done subpar. Tommy or Tess could have development or could take larger roles, but considering how they butchered Tommy’s character in Part 2 I don’t think they care enough about him to make an entire story. And i doubt they have the talent to ever pull off a sequel that could make old fans come back unless if it is totally unrelated like House of Dragons, even then most wouldn’t care.

I don't think sticking with Ellie will translate to Naughty Dog accepting that Part II was a mistake. No, the problem here is Ellie's story is pretty much a closed book. That, or her one-note character in Part II didn't land very well on many people that having her as the protagonist in Part III doesn't sound too palatable or interesting. Anyway, because of Part II, Part III has a tougher mountain to climb. If only ND cast new characters in Part II, which I would've preferred, things would've been way different. At least, it would'nt have ended this way.

Their main multiplayer director was a sex pest by the name of Robert Cogburn. They tried protecting him by firing his victims, but the VP who was in charge went down with him after *Sony* stepped in once it was made public. Neil Druckmann has a public post on the Naughty Dog website defending Cogburn, so there's the threat that Cogburn can rejoin development and thus multiplayer will finally begin development in earnest. Until then they're reliant on people who have no industry contacts who aren't aware of the toxicity of Naughty Dog's workplace conditions under Druckmann.
