Love that podcasting mic! What would you recommend in a hybrid classroom situation in which you have some students in-class and others live streaming the session from home? Still the podcasting mic?
@JulieSchiro4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren! Great question. Yes, still the podcasting mic. Since you'll be moving back and forth in/out of the classroom, I'd suggest a small "podcasting" mic like the Blue Snowball. Keep me posted! :)

Great question
@blahblah40234 жыл бұрын
Related to that question, we have had questions about teaching using a mask... In that event, might a lavaliere microphone will be better because it is picking up sounds from your torso?
@JulieSchiro4 жыл бұрын
@@blahblah4023 Hi John! Great question. I bet a face mask will act as a sort of pop filter, which could make the lavalier (especially more inexpensive ones) sound better by taking down the wind noise/t's/p's. So the lav is a great option for in-class teaching, especially since it allows you to move around the room unlike a standalone mic, which would root you to the desk. The lav mic is also probably a better option in the mask-wearing scenario than, say, a headset with a mic arm, which could hit the mask and in general cause weird interference due to its close proximity to the mask. But for at home "studio" recordings (where I suppose you aren't wearing a mask anyways), the standalone mic is king!
@markalleneaton4 жыл бұрын
I'm facing a similar hybrid situation next week - my class is very discussion-based and I'm concerned that the personal lav mic I'm feeding into my laptop for the Zoom students won't be sensitive enough to pick up in-class students' questions & comments from 30 feet away. My strategy is to use a second lav mic (I'm limited to the gear I already own and don't have the resources for a proper room mic) placed near the front of the class with both mics feeding into a splitter into a Zoom H1 (for an independent audio recording) into the laptop. It's a little Frankenstein-esque, but I have high hopes.

Dang it is so nice to see recommendations that aren't just "get an XLR mic or go home". Thank you! ❤️ I have a Blue Yeti and it's been a bit of a pain (lots of computer vibrations picked up if on desk, very quiet audio if mounted on an arm) but this video inspired me to keep trying! Would love to see a video on how to effectively monitor your audio - I usually plug headphones into the mic but it feels like everyone else is managing to monitor with levels and such adjusted!
@JulieSchiro3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for another nice comment Emma! 😊 Really appreciate it. Hmmm, in terms of a solution...I wonder why it is so quiet on the arm. One idea is to use something like OBS as an intermediary (you can use this to stream to Zoom and a ton of other platforms) and you can boost the audio volume in the software. I check my levels by recording in OBS and playing back, and once I'm happy, I don't need to monitor with headphones. Keep me posted?

Alternatives for zoom meetings on laptop: 1. For office calls, in Headset type, Jabra Evolve2 40 (~$140) works well. The mic cuts out ambient noise pretty well (including ur kids yelling in the same room). Cheaper alternative with mic noise reduction feature: Logitech H340 headset. 2. Combo of 'Airpods + Lavalier mic': For those who already own airpods.. if not satisfied wt the airpods microphone (muffled sound), club them wt Rode Lavalier/collar mic connected to 3.5mm jack on laptop with airpods connected to same laptop via bluetooth. Within zoom settings, select airpods as speakers and Rode mic as microphone.

First of all, thank you for joining the KZbin community. You are a delightful addition to the usual collection of techies that post about KZbin production. I like that your point of view is more from a cinematography point of view than a gamer point of view, I was wondering how you were such a natural when this is your first post, but I see from your background that you have probably the ideal background to be doing these kind of videos - teaching and film. Good luck and please make more videos, especially on the budget end for teachers trying to keep students interested in the screen after all this time in lockdown. As for the lavalier mic, I picked up one that had an adapter that I found out I needed to use on my desktop computer, but it was included fortunately. I'm lucky I didn't toss it. Always check the packaging for extra cables, lol. Sorry, I don't have a link, I must have picked it up at a sale or maybe when Radio Shack went under. Anyway, you've inspired me to do a video for my own use to see which mic works best for my Teams meetings. Good luck and I like the bloopers at the end. It's always nice to see someone who isn't afraid to show what's behind the curtain.

Just discovered your YT Channel Julie, Great job! You have a nice way of getting your points and tips across to the audience. Keep up the super work. These kind of helpful videos are much needed, especially in todays' world of so many of us setting up "Home Studios" in support of all the remote/online meetings. Please do a video also of your camera setup, it works very well. Thank you for all the tips!

Your focus on audio is laudable and appreciated. Thank you. One unsolicited suggestion: please consider making the main narrative track the loudest, especially when the range is broad and the jump is instant.

You are a natural on camera. Great teacher as well. I am a musician and want to get going on performing on line. I have the studio thing down but really weak in video. Duh! I am going to hang out with you for a while and see what I can learn. Great camera presence. Keep it up.

Go to Baby, It’s Cold Outside George Furlow and if you would, could you make some suggestions about lighting camera. I mixed audio with my studio stuff. Put everything in iMovie and the popped it on KZbin and FaceTime. Again, thanks so much in advance.

I came across your webcam video as I find myself in the market, and I enjoyed it so much I watched the rest (and subscribed). Informative, practical, and you're just so engaging... I think you could have a very successful channel if you wanted to go that way.

Congrats on your first video. It was a delight to watch. About microphones not working on your laptop (and sorry if this was already mentioned), try using a headphone microphone splitter. I find that the mic, even being a trrs port doesn't register as a microphone in some laptops. Best wishes for you and your KZbin channel.
@JulieSchiro3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thank you for the lovely comment and the help too! The splitter would be if I had two jacks right (one for a mic and one for headphones) or are you saying that this would help with the dual port too? I've since found a TRSS to TRS cable that works for my lavalier (but not for the Bose headphones...nothing has helped those lol - I think it's a unique problem to that headset).
@therayofsunshine3 жыл бұрын
@@JulieSchiro Hi Julie, I meant a y-splitter cable that takes a single headset port (trrs) from the laptop and splits it into two separate ports (trs), one for headphones and one for microphone. Then try plugging the microphone into the microphone end of the y-splitter. (You may still need the trrs/trs adapter). I had to do that with one of my microphones and it worked afterwards.

Ah okay! Thanks for clarifying, that makes more sense.

You are a lifesaver. Actually I wanted a mic for video conferencing and would have bought the lavalier mic but thanks to your comment on compatibility, I didnt

Once again, exactly the video I was looking for at just the right time. Trying to improve how I sound at work calls. I thought I could get away with a gaming headset mic, but maybe buying a cheap podcast mic and separate sound-quality headphones is the right option. I think you shed light on just how poor the webcam/mic state of the world is in 2021 hehe. Thank you for the great demo and recommendation

Hi @CompositingMentor. Thank you for another lovely comment! "Podcast" mic all the way. And I don't even bother with headphones. I just use my laptop's speakers - no feedback or echoing issues. Keep me posted!

It is so easy to listen to Julie. .... maybe it is the microphone! 😃 Actually, I really like the detail she goes into to explain the pros and cons. I hadn’t ever commented on a post before, but found hers so easy to watch that I thought I would.

Totally the mic!! Lol! I'm so obsessed with that UHURU. Thank you for the comment. I'm especially honored since you mentioned you never comment!
