Hidden inside a TV Repair Shop that has been in business since 1956 is one of the BEST VINTAGE AUDIO Collections I have ever seen! I'm on a HiFi Quest around the country to find the best vintage hifi, and today I'm at Mort's TV & Video in Pennsylvania. Mort's had some of the best vintage stereo receivers I've ever laid eyes on!

Great stuff here. That's quite a collection. A lot of those prices remind me of what things cost back in the 80s. Out of reach for many. Those NHT (Now Hear This) towers have built-in subwoofers. The square Design Acoustic speakers have down firing subwoofers, and had a great sound. The Mirage speakers are a higher end cousin to the Energy line, and have tweeters that sing like angels.

Those prices are insanely high, that's probably why the store has a large inventory, they are not selling quickly. I wish I would have kept my Pioneer SX-980 in the 80's, I paid $100 for it used. If I could have sold it for $2,200 today like this store is asking, that's an incredible return on investment. $300 for one of these mid-fi receivers is just too much.

Recapping one of these receivers is a time intensive process and takes some skill. So for a smaller receiver like that Pioneer SX 525 ($429) your looking at $50-$100 for the unit, and 2-3 hundred for the overhaul. I have a SX 636 that I bought for $100. But it has DC voltage on the left channel and needs recapping and some of the transistors replaced. The recap kit itself is $90 on eBay. And desoldering the old and resoldering the new is an arduous job. I think their pricing is really fair, especially for someone who just wants a reliable vintage receiver without all the work.

Thanks for the heads up. I just bought that Teac A-650 cassette deck. A top of the line Teac deck. A sleeper deck today but not when it was new. This is my second one. The first one I bought for $290 in 1977 while stationed in Okinawa. One of the more expensive decks back then. Great price today for a reconditioned one. They are built like a tank.

19:08 I own a very similar Pioneer multi-cassette deck model, but it's a 6 + 1 deck, so slots for six cassettes on the left side and a single mechanism on the right to play or record onto cassette and if memory serves, I bought it for around $150 in the early 2000's ($101 bid on eBay and $49 shipping to Canada). It's still in great shape working perfectly. :)

I have been (kind of) collecting vintage gear for several decades. I didn't aim to collect, it just happened over time. Dynaco tube and solid-state amps and preamps, Fisher 500B, Carvin DCM150, Kenwood KA 7100, and the Pioneer Spec 1&2. Many of these I found at garage sales for $10 - $20. (Spec 1&2, plus the Carvin) I have only sent one of these out for repair. (beyond my scope) They are all pristine looking and in working condition. Most seem to have been bought by students and left behind when they moved away from home 40 years ago. The victim of parents cleaning out to downsize I suppose. It's interesting to see what some of these might fetch with today's demand. (could only read a few of those price tags)

I still have the Pioneer 1280 receiver I bought new in 1979, from a long defunct audio store in the Cherry Creek shopping center. it was the model right below the 1980. My wife worked at a thrift store last year and brought home a Marantz 4230 Quadraphonic receiver. She paid $35 for it and it works perfect. I told her if it has a silver front, I want it..the rest is just junk.

I see them selling vintage gear on eBay pretty often. The way they use a cardboard box with two of their stickers to prop up the piece for photos is pretty distinctive and memorable. I think you are better off doing voiceovers rather than using the live audio from the original camera recording. It gives you better audio quality and also gives you a chance to do some research on gear that you are not as familiar with.

I'd really like to meet the grand God of vintage stereo that sets the market prices for this equipment and see where he gets these prices from. I'm not bitching, I just really don't understand what justifies them. 25 years ago, prices were a quarter of what they are today, and there are plenty more units available now, I'd say. It's baffling to me.

As the years pass by the electrolytic capacitors values will get changed because of the electrolyte inside the capacitor will evaporate or sometimes get leaked in PCB itsef so Amplifier beyond the age 20 years won't be good as it was new, the audio quality will differ between left and right channel.

You need a FOMO warning for these :) Some of us are trying to kick the addiction :) I have a Sansui 2000 4000 and 7000. I had my 4000 completely restored. I have been trying to figure out why I actually like the sound of the 2000 more. I would describe the characteristic as, potentially much less mid range, (something I prefer which could indicate a power starve in need of a restore), it bleeds off sound and drops the VU meter faster than any of the other amps. (goes quiet fast). This tends to emphasize the highs and lows and gives the impression of more dynamics. Compared the two, (4000 and 2000) on the Douk VU3. Volume position set to 9oclock on the 2000 and 4000 with some adjustment to attempt to match their overall volume. CAVEAT. I am a very low SPL listener who is typically happy under 70db. I am using JBL Studio 590's which are highly sensitive. Anywho I wanted to give a shout out about my Sansui experiences and conundrum. Thanks for the videos.

Hahaha thanks for sharing! My help feeding the addiction is just getting started. Thanks for sharing about the 2000 as well!

@@LennyFlorentine There is a 2000x and 2000a as well. The first one was the 2000. Silver knob. That first one was in your video and matches mine. It was a great buy after the heartbreak I had with a failing Yamaha CR-840 that self destructed shortly after I bought it. All the Sansui 2000 models have pages on hifiEngine.

Curious if all of those receivers were completely recapped and gone through with known troublesome transistors and diodes replaced or just brought up to proper working condition? And, did you buy anything? I also own a TV repair shop (although we specialize in custom installation now) and have a lot of those receivers in my collection waiting for the day I can bring myself to part with them! LOL!

At THOSE prices (!!!), that inventory is not going to move fast. So no wonder Mort's has so much around.

Вы можете купить где то дешевле. Добавьте стоимость ремонта и запчастей. А также время и негарантированый хороший результат. Выбор за Вами.

Hey Rick! I am no longer a part of Just Audio and am working on my new store from the ground up! But in the meantime I’ve ventured on this quest to find the best HiFi in the country! I did open up a text line to reach me 443-402-5069. People can send system pics, or suggestions of stores or personal collections to visit! I appreciate you being a long time subscriber and your comments as always and I promise there is really great content to come!
