What would also help is that, looking online for warm or cool colors. For instance, if you're looking for a blue, look up warm blues, and cool blues. A cool blue would be like a cadet blue, a warm blue would be like a sapphire blue. If you find that, print it. Sewing books are a good place to look.

I've found that my skin looks better when I wear the OPPOSITE of my undertone. I have a yellow undertone. I look sickly and almost invisible when I wear beige, some golds, some yellows and reds. My skin looks even, healthy, and peachy, when I wear cool colors blues, teals, greens and cools grays. It's like the cool color makes my warm skin warmer and healthier.
@franyfine2554
@franyfine2554 3 жыл бұрын
I made a similar observation. My skin is also quite yellow and light. eyes and hair are dark with some gold in them. I thought that yellow, beige and orange were my enemies. Now i realized that this is not true for all of them depending on how 'clear' or 'muddy' they are (i don't know if these age the correct terms). I think the enemy are muddy colours. The clear bold colours also match the contrast of light skin to dark hair. Is your hair dark, too?

Ann G. R. you are confusing sallow skin with warm undertones. You clearly have cool undertones despite sallow skin if the cool tones are flattering and warm colours drain you. If you look terrible in dirty beiges, mustards and orange then you do not have yellow undertone.
@anng.r.687
@anng.r.687 2 жыл бұрын
@@SueRosalie Thank you for commenting. It is confusing that when trying to identify the undertone, my veins look greenish, and my skin looks much better against gold metal as opposed to silver. So I would guess I have a yellow undertone?
@emily_kingham
@emily_kingham 6 ай бұрын
@anng.r.687 your veins are green, and you look best with gold, so that means you are warm undertoned. not necessarily yellow. it is odd you look best in cool tones. maybe you're actually neutral, lol.
@irnalonso
@irnalonso 3 ай бұрын
@@anng.r.687 you may have olive skin. Usually, olives looks warm (yellow-greenish skin) because they have a lot of yellow in their skins, but they can be cool undertoned (blue + yellow = Green, so, olive). Any ethnicity can be olive, but It is typically asociated with Mediterranean, Latinamerican, Middle East or South Asían ancestry I suggest you to look It Up. Figuring out that I have olive skin has helped me a lot with my colors!

I don’t know where I saw/learned this color tip, but I’ve never seen it again! The idea is to look at your face in a mirror, in daylight/natural light, then close your eyes and drape your entire face with a color you are interested in. When it’s draped, then open your eyes and quickly pay attention: what do you see first? Your face? Or the color you draped? If you see the color first, it will wear YOU. If you see your face first, the color will flatter. What do you think about this? (It has worked for me, and it allows for such specificity in vetting a color!)

This reminds me of the thing my hairstylist once told me about finding your hair part (esp if you can’t remember when they’ve already sectioned the hair, or if it changes and you’re not sure) she said to close your eyes and tuck your hair behind your ear/brush it out of your face/part it without opening them. Wherever your hand goes is your part and even if you don’t think it is, you’re probably parting your hair here without thinking about it throughout the day anyway. I’m gonna try this tip you shared bc I’m cool toned and very pale (like, get the first foundation ALL THE WAY to the pale side and that’s probably a shade or two too dark for me, as it has been my whole life) so I only ever wear black bc I just can’t see myself in color. I’ve usually used pink and I feel like that’s a terrible choice. I used to wear white too but now I’m pretty sure I look a bit dead. I’ve recently heard that powder blue could be a good one to try for my complexion, so I can use this to check!

Watch Merriam Style's video on neutral undertones and why they don't really exist. You might not stand out dramatically as being either warm or cool, but probability wise, you likely lean ever so slightly warm or cool, not neutral. That being said, warm and cool colors could both still look good on you.

This could relate more to the 16 seasons model which features other colour scales (chroma and light/dark) rather than just the hue. It could be because you're a clear season so you suit mostly contrasting, intense colours. I'm a clear spring (bright and warm) and I seem to suit the same colours you mentioned so I would recommend checking that out if you haven't already :)

The explanation was very clear. Thank you very much. Yet I still need to train my eyes to recognise the colours before I'm confident enough to tell it's warm or cool. For this training, I played a colour recognition game on the mobile. By the way, the shopping centres in Australia rarely have windows for clothes shops. Need a pair of eagle eyes to quickly tell if a colour is warm or cool. 😂

take the watercolors they have for schoolchildren and try to match colors. you will be surprised. One can mix brown for instance, but a nice chestnut brown (not a dark muddy mixture if you did not wash your brush our properly) is not easy to achieve. You will need lots of yellow. Or of course in a paint program like gimp ;) I did some paintings (mixing colors) and later tried to mix colors for funiture (DiY) - that really trains your sense of color.

So if we were to classify what you were wearing in this video for reference, you have a warm undertone so you're wearing a a warm toned sweater (this one I'm not so sure about), and a warm undertone red lipstick, and the pop of contrasting undertone is from your silver, cool toned earrings. Your natural hair color also seems to have golden hues so it complements your complexion. Can anyone else confirm these? I'm trying to get better at figuring out undertones, and I don't think Justine has mentioned her own undertone in these videos before. Edit: I went back to her first undertone video and she did say she has orange tones and has a warm undertone, so strike that last sentence.

Hey Justine! I am a fan of your lip color collection..I am not a fan of orange shade but in this video, apart from your excellent content, your lip color also stands out! As lip colors can majorly affect your look and you seem to have an excellent taste of it, I would like to suggest you to make a video on how to choose lip colors or how to use them as a efficient tool in dressing up. I would love to know how you choose your pallete as I love all of them. ❤

Love all these color palettes videos but I will be very honest and say I am totally confused about colors. No matter what video I watch, I am lost unless we are talking about the basic colors. So wish I could get it! That’s why I stick to white & blue color, I never mess it up 😋 but none the less, great video Justine! 👍

You would laugh to see the different things I have tried Justine! haha! The only one I get is blue but don’t mix another color in the blue because then I’m lost.

May I suggest playing with water colors or acrylic paints? I find I’m having an easier time since I played with the three basics red, yellow, blue paints just trying to combine dabs of them to get other colors. It helped me see the color wheel around me and was fun playtime too. 🙂

Me too. I am also totally confused. For example, if I add to blue some red, I get warm blue. But on the other hand, if I add to red some blue, I will get cold red. But cold red is still warmer than warm blue!? I don't understand.

It's interesting that until I saw this video, I never knew what my undertone was. But I have tones of orange/red dresses in my wardrobe and I never wear silver jewellery. Now I know why. Thanks Justine.

Justine I love your videos! They are so smart and helpful. Over the last year my wardrobe has gotten a bit un-organised but with the help of videos like this i’m able to slim down what suits me, what doesn’t and I’ve been able to make it much easier to find pieces that match each other giving my more freedom with my clothes. Thank you so much :)

Great video. When I was a teenager I never understood, why I don't feel comfortable with wearing olive green or orange. And later I learned about color undertones. I'm a fair person with cool undertones. Even in lipsticks I always choose cool undertones

I just love colour theory! My aha-moment was when I bought two red lipsticks from the same brand - MACs Ruby Woo (cool) and Lady Danger (warm). Until that moment I'd always thought that I had a warm undertone, but no matter how I tried Lady Danger ALWAYS made me look like a clown while Ruby Woo turns me in to a femme fatale ☺️ No more warm colours for me!

Thank you very much for this Justine! I have warm undertones but I wanted to expand my wardrobe color choices. I've heard long before that the warmer versions of cool colors would suit me. I never knew how to determine the warmer shades of cool colors until now. Thank you for the awesome explanation and demonstration.

Merci, Justine! Excellent tips on color. Although I've taken many art classes, including color theory, that last tip about adding a touch of the opposite temperature to an outfit to accentuate the colors, is a new one for me. I'm looking forward to trying it out!

Many years ago Justine, it was fashionable to be 'analyzed' to see which category one fits into, in terms of a 'season', and I was told I am a Winter, who can also wear some autumn colours..but if I take my skin tone into consideration instead, I am neutral/warm olive (Italian) and in that case I would be considered 'warm' (and not cool like Winter). Yet I can wear strong colours like white, black, jade greens, red etc. It is so difficult sometimes to know what looks good because sometimes it depends on the depth or tone of the colour, and I think some neutral colours that are balance of warm and cool, look good on olive complexions too. I still struggle with it though, even though Im 64 already! Thanks for your videos, I enjoy them all and always learn something. x

Yay!! I can confirm that I DO know about warm and cool colours. Gotta tell you a little story... When I left school at 16 (I'm 43) I took a 6 month Computer Clerical course which included knowing how to dress for the office! they taught us about warm and cool colours, I learned it quickly. This really helped me throughout my life when shopping for clothes. This shoud be taught at schools, kids pick it up quickly. Oh! And thank you for the little tip at the end! I willl now look at shoes in cool colour with a different eye... But not the scarves... But the belts too! Ohhh this is so much fun. Thank you, Justine!, hugs and kisses.

Justine- all of your postings are so welcome! I have been following you for quite a while and look forward to each new post. When you used the colour samples you reminded me of the time I studied colour theory with Ati Gropius Johansen. Thank you so much for all the time you put into these informative posts- you are a lovely inspiration, as your approach is viable to women of all ages.

Brilliant Justine, I am warm and autumn colours suit me really well. I can't seem to wear pastels at all, they just wash me out. OMG when looking at the colours of my clothes, I have just discovered that I have a summer jacket, a spring jacket and a heavy winter jacket all in a shade of Kaki green which I obviously love. Hadn't noticed this before!!! I honestly think I have a bit of a problem with colours and in particular identifying colours, especially green and blue. I hope the colour wheel will help me because I have made some real mistakes when shopping over the years with colour, cut, fit, quality and length, you name it and I have made it. However I have stopped buying 'fast fashion' after watching your videos and looking at what I already have that is a classic style and can go from year to year and season to season. Thanks Eleanor
