Hiro said in interviews that he got sick and tired of making the villains of Fairy Tail as sympathetic as possible, so he made these ones as the most despicable menagerie of creatures you'll ever witness, that way the observers can tap-dance on their ashes. It wouldn’t hurt to have a sympathetic villain but we’ll probably get that in the returned demon king in this newest arc. Though I like that some of the side villains and some main villains are shown to be just as evil as they act; gets a little diversity in there that not everyone has some tragic backstory, is being controlled, or otherwise is a good person thinking they’re doing the right thing.

I mean sometimes someone could be like GMG Minerva becuase that’s just how they are and not becuase as a kid they were hurt blah blah blah. For example in redo of healer manga bullet / Brett got a backstory; it simply reinforced what readers already thought of him rather then try to give some reason or make him sympathetic why he was evil.

With Fairy Tail he would think up the beginning and ending of an arc, then fill in the rest as he went. This style is actually very common and is a good way of approaching writing, but only if you're capable of connecting certain elements together to make it so it doesn't break established canon. With Eden Zero though he supposedly outlines not only the beginning and ending, but certain plot crucial details and aspects that connect the current story to previous arcs.

I'm one of those people. I never really liked fairy tail, but dude eden zero is way better than ft. Also i like how he hiro mashima's character design as a fan of rave master I've no complain going into ft at first till i dropped it after the grand magic games. People should think of his character designs as actors with different roles for different stories. Eden Zero is now one of my favorite manga! Glad he learned from his past mistakes with ft.

Yeah that is my main gripe with the “anime community” as a whole. If it’s something really popular and is a must watch, unless I am already reading or watching it beforehand, my expectations grow way too high and I know for a fact they can’t be met. Which is why shit like Jojos and HXH I can’t actually enjoy because people have set the bar way too high and I know they can’t be reached. So I have to pass on them. On the flip side when people are just mass hating on something I have to play Devil’s advocate and see if what they say is true or if the series has some merit. And usually they do. And is why in this year before it ends I want to get through all of Fairy Tail and judge the series on my own. Throwing out the biases like from Joey or KOL out the window.

Mashima's style certainly is easy to recognize, but he also tents to reuse the same body-model over and over again, which actually can cause issues in the manga version of things. An example is that in the final arc, for a time, Zeref looked almost exactly like Grey, so when the website screwed up and I saw this image before the context, I was very confused... Mashima usually makes enough effort with hair, eyes and clothing to hide that though, but sometimes it can cause issues.

Actually he reuses designs because of Masami Kurumada, check him out, a manga legend. He reuses character designs for characters in similar roles, the star system if memory doesnt fail me. Add: also aparently the star system was created by ozamu tezuka, but since Mashima generation was heavily influented by kurumada and toryama, Im willing to bet he learned that from him.

Mashima stated many times that one of his biggest inspirations as an author are video games like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy and that he wants his works to be seen similar to them. In Final Fantasy for example every game has its own distinct setting, with its own characters, story, worldbuilding and themes, but there are many things that are universal to the series as a whole(monsters, spells, summons, jobs, chocobos, moogles, a man named Cid that is connected to airships). For example Plue and Happy can be compared to Mog, who appears in games like FF6, FF9 or FF13-2 but in all of them he is a distinct character with its own backstory and personality.

Eden's zero just makes me incredibly happy, it really feels like I'm reading fairy tail again, but it's just so much better and well put together. The characters are familiar, but so much more interesting, the world is more immersive and dynamic, and the story is really intriguing. This is just such a good series, I'd highly recommend anyone to pick this up. Sadly, I have to agree with your criticisms. People either only give a damn about fairy tail and don't wanna pay attention to anything else mashima does cause FT was never something you had to use your brain for. Or people despise FT and never wanna give eden's zero a chance even when they're NOTHING alike. This is one of the best shounen out right now, and really shows mashimas talent with characters, worlds, comedy, and so much more. And his genius when it comes to stories. I don't remember any shounen before this one taking such a dark turn and capitalizing on modernization. Everyone wants to hate until they see how much of a king mashima is.

I'd argue against Drakken's first scene suggesting him to be "morally ambiguous" because Drakken didn't just stop at breaking the dude's mouth, but put him to work as a slave so he could keep bleeding him dry of every drop of money (and lifeforce) he's worth. Rather, I think it's more accurate to say Drakken _thinks_ he's a morally grey figure when we can plainly see he's nothing short of a human parasite. That is its own very special kind of scummy villainy, and I hope more analysts will start giving this show a watch at least for that.

I’d recommend people read EZ the art is more impressive then FT. I’m still waiting for a dub release for EZ anime. But EZ is very underrated, manga sells show that, the recent vol only sold 40k +. EZ has yet to find a Mainstream audience in Japan. That being said read Ez. The art is great, the character design are very good, the fan service is there. And the story is very impressive. I really appreciate this video. Because I thought it was odd that the mainstream anime community wasnt discussing it which is bizarre. Now i see why. Ez isn’t JJK or TR but it is a very soild fun story.

Yes I agree completely on this!! 😭I wish it got more mainstream but at the same time maybe this is a nice comfy spot were the fandom doesn’t get too toxic and messed up cuss of how big it is it’s just a nice fandom were everyones nice to each other from what I’ve seen from Twitter, Instagram and KZbin, so maybe it’s a good thing that it’s not mainstream 😅but personally aside I think Edens zero is more than solid it has a lot of things that I think make it more than an average good series and two of those reasons are because of how good the interactions are cuss they feel very real and the second reason is cause of belial gore that arc was better than a lot of shounen arcs in anime I’ve seen and read and I think it proves that Edens zero is not only a better competitor to fairytail but to other shonen series out there imo. And I totally agree with the art style I thought fairytail had amazing art style and it did but comparing it with Edens zero the art style is not only improved and amazingly good but it’s also consistently good which is impressive since mashima is always so busy! And last thing! 6 episodes are already out dubbed in animekisa it’s an illegal website if you don’t mind watching it there 😅or just wait for Netflix to drop it! It comes out in 5 days anyways lol

Mashima is smart by having similar character designs. It saves him time and is why he’s able to have multiple series ongoing at the same time. His fans can also recognize the characters and jump right into Mashima’s next manga. Some Mangaka aren’t able to have the same success after their big hit. A recent example is Kishimoto and Samurai 8.

Eden's Zero really shows mashima's growth as both an artist and story teller. He found a tone he really wanted to do and improved upon it! With fairy tail, he wanted it to be more light hearted than rave master, and now in eden's zero, he wanted to do something darker and more morally gray (in a way). The thing is that he's DOING OTHER STUFF that was touched upon in his other series but now he gets to explore. And really with how Edens Zero is going, I love it. I wanna explore the worlds he's created. With Rave Master, I wanted everything to be okay and for things to become peaceful. With Fairy Tail, it was one long journey with characters I'd absolutely love to be friends with! And now Eden's Zero takes it up another notch of combining both and then escalating it to a galactic trip where ANYTHING can happen. Feel how you feel about his stories, I won't push you either way. But give it a chance and maybe you'll find an adventure of his you wanna follow and see through. Great video as always! I love the introspection and how you discuss his characters. Mashima is definitely strongest when writing relationships and how it affects the story.

THANK YOU FOR THIS. I really love Eden Zero. I really love fairy tail too but to me Eden Zero was a step up and had a lot to explore on! I couldn't converse with anyone about it nor my interest in it because of the fear that I would be brushed off. I honestly have a personal connection with Shiki with his drive to befriend as many people as they could due to the inability of not being able to in the past. I learned through him that it's okay that there are some that don't work out and there are some that stay, and that's okay.

What it comes to mashimas series you can definitely see is history in all of them. Rave master was his gateway, in creating a story that got him credit in the Manga industry. And is a fantastic story overall. Fairytale in my opinion is his magnum opus. Has more of a different tone the most shonen and achieve something different that to my experience no other manga or anime series is able to replicate. And why does have its flaws sometimes it’s an amazing series overall And shot him up even further in the manga industry for better or for worse. And even the criticism he’s gone for fairytale he’s embrace that and fix those issues in not only 100 year quest, but also Eden zero. Which in my opinion seems like him mixing the tones of both of his series together with a couple of twists and make it something new. I haven’t seen it yet but I can’t wait to see what’s in the store. Great video

As someone whose favourite anime used to he Fairy Tail, I can say that it was by no means perfect, whilst I'll always love Fairy Tail, I can't help but adore Edens Zero far more. I've always been a sci-fi guy than a magic man, heck I love Star Wars more than Harry Potter, so genre-wise this is up my alley. I also think Mashima has not only refined the ideas he displayed in Fairy Tail, which also introducing more to stop making Edens Zero from being "space Fairy Tail". I also like the power system more, as I think it just helps to make the characters more consistent in terms of power-scaling. I am glad to say Edens Zero is my new favourite anime and I cannot wait to see the next few arcs in the manga be animated and to see where else in the cosmos Mashima takes us

I like his design. A lot of people in the community think he could be related to Laguna somehow and I think that would be interesting. Looking forward to see how the situation unfolds!

Bro, I got some level of trauma from Drakken, it was terrifying, not in the fact he killed shiki (clearley some way or another he would be brought back), But in the psycological aspect! I mean, I've seen worst, but that deosn't make this one less scary, and when Shiki got the Over Drive after being triggered by the load gun sound, remembering his own death, was crazy! I see Drakken and I rememeber what happened, I'm scare on how are they gonna do that whenever a second season comes XD However, To some stent I still like Fairy Tail better because of the fun, light and hopefull feeling I get from it, I love the chaotic energy. I mean, for "Serious and logically realistic stories" (which are some of the main complains regarding FT) I have hundreds upon hundreds of other Animes, I like Fairy Tail because IT IS different; Is actully unique in its own way. But I know Eden's Zero is objectivly way better in the narrative, character development and adventure aspect. Is not a master piece or anything, but is better than Fairy Tail. I still don't care though, I like both! XD And funny enough, when Shura asked Shiki to be his friend I was like "OMG! WHAT!? Someone asked Shiki first!? What is he gonna do now!? 0.0" and the way Shiki rejected Shura was earned, he knows how to pick his friends now B)

In Edens Zero, there’s been no random friendship power-ups so far, I’m happy that Mashima makes sure to use the criticism he receives. Edit: Also, I agree with the redesign thing you talked about. Yeah, he re-uses designs. Honestly idrc about that. I don’t get how people didn’t mind Ft using designs from Rave Master, but when he does it with EZ, everyone is angry all of the sudden. Although they look similar, and there are similar names, their personalities and relationships with one another are completely different. I honestly love Shiki way more than Natsu, he has way better development, and he tries works past the struggles his isolation has given him to form relationships with the good people he meets. I loved seeing Levy and team shadow gear in the background of the show and the reference that Rebecca has seen Fairy Tail. I've read edens zero since chapter 1 released, i wasn't really into ft at the time but when his promotional image for the series was out i started to get hyped, i hadn't really read any manga either so i just went by what i remember really liking about what i watched of fairy tail at the time, the great caharacters, even after later the same summer getting more into fairy tail i was enjoying edens zero, and as it went on it just got better and better, i was kinda inconsistant in when i read newer chapters but having that extra edge of having chunks of chapters just means i got more into it, people brushing it off as a fairy tail clone kinda ticks me off because it's so much more than that, i love all three of mashima's big series to death and they're all unique from eachoter, while i do think the very beginning of edens is kinda similar to ft even then it's easy to tell it's something different, i really like how mashima is really planning things out like he knows exactly what'll happen and just keeps on expanding on things, i think by the end of the series it could definetly be his best work

The complaint about the similar character designs is especially ridiculous because Mashima isn't even the only person who does this. I've been reading the sequel to Seven Deadly Sins, Four Knights of the Apocalypse, which came out earlier this year. The main Character, Percival, looks like Meliodas from the original series. Another character looks eerily similar to Ban. This is mostly likely because the characters were all designed by the same artist in the same style. If you look up any two works by the same mangaka, you are bound to see similarities.

So when the show ended it devastated me. Having Eden Zero feels like getting fairy tail again, but its so much better. Regarding the "lazy" argument, all I can say is this: Grab a pen, a piece of paper and draw around 100 individual characters, each with their own unique features and looks, so that a person can easily differentiate them. Now draw 100 more... And 100 more... and you get the idea. It's usually the people that can't draw to safe their life that complain the loudest about artists reusing characters in other work. It's not lazy. It's just using established character designs that look good and are easily memorizable in the end. And it speeds up drawing time because you don't have to remember X other new designs. Artists aren't bound to always having to draw unique things. They can re-use assets from previous work if they like. There is no rule preventing them from that, so to all that complain about this: Learn to draw like those Manga artists or shut the fuck up!

an interesting thing about the chronophage is, it dosent necessarily kill people, it makes it so that they weren't born yet... perhaps then they will be born into a much better world, or maybe history is doomed to repeat itself and the chronophage is just there to rewind history whenever things get to corrupt. A very interesting concept

I read the first 20 to 25ish or so chapters and then my interest just petered out. I really love Fairy Tail's round-about first half and when starting that series was drawn in right away, though I have to admit it fell off toward the end. But with Eden's Zero... it's not that I think it's bad or anything I can put my finger on, it just didn't draw me in. Where with Fairy Tail I was eagerly awaiting the day it came out and read the new chapter right away and was also eager to discuss the chapter afterwrads, with Eden Zero I just forgot about it until I went "Oh right, haven't checked that in two or three weeks" and once I read it... that was it. No urge to discuss what happened and speculate on what might happen next like back in the Fairy Tail days. Maybe I'll give it another shot and see if it get's more gripping past the point to which I read. After all I had a similar problem with Fairy Tail 100 year quest initially, but quite like where the series has been going once they were past the Water God Dragon. As for the Fairy Tail hate... I think that comes from losing something they loved. Early on Fairy Tail was very highly rated, but at some point people stopped liking it and apparently went to shit on everything in that series as a coping mechanism. Suddenly everything from the very start was terrible, inclusing the very stuff they praised some month or years earlier. All the slightly bad stuff was suddenly horrible and all the good stuff was either downplayed or ignored entirely, so it wouldn't compromise their narritive. :/ Then add the copy-cats who "knew all along" that Fairy Tail was terrible (but never bothered to actually say so until that point) and suddenly it's the new fad to shit on Mashima, not because they had any legitimate problems with the series, but because it's always fun to dogpile on the latest punching bag. After all it worked to well with SAO once Digibro opened the floodgates, so why not try to repeat it with Mashima. I especially hate the people who accuse Hiro Mashima of "copying" stuff from Naruto and One Piece, when he actually was the one who did it first all the way back in RAVE. So I am unfortunately not at all surprised that many just used Eden's Zero to find more anti-Mashima ammunition rather than trying to see the series on it's own merits.

I definitely think a lot of the Fairy Tail hate does come from people being burnt from it. The series started off promising a lot, but it very quickly became formulaic. Even within that formula it was great (until a certain point...) but some people did not want a shounen that was formulaic in that way.

Personally, "Fairy Tail" is one of my all-time favorite manga/anime, so the similarities to it help drive my enjoyment of "Edens Zero," while as you've said there are also a number of significant differences that make it its own thing in ways that are just as good as what "Fairy Tail" delivered.

Thank you for the feedback on this series. I really love Edens Zero and I think this is probably gonna be Mashima's greatest work. He really hammered out all the issues so far people had with FT, even though I personally already loved FT as well. I just think that people need to understand that this is a different story despite the previous influences from other series
