While numerous screening options exist, our nation has now adopted a system that eliminates the need for invasive procedures like inserting a camera into the anus. Instead, we can conduct a virtual colonoscopy using CT scans, offering a view akin to traditional colonoscopy. Additionally, the FIT test is a non-invasive way to detect blood presence in stool, a potential sign of cancer, as certain genetic markers from cancerous growth might be found in fecal matter.
By employing a variety of these tests, we can efficiently detect polyps in the large intestine. It's recommended that individuals undergo cancer screening from ages 50 to 76. However, if one's health permits, screenings should continue even post 76. Typically, a colonoscopy is advised once every decade if results are normal. On the other hand, the FOBT (Fecal Occult Blood Test) or FIT (Fecal immunochemical test) should be administered annually, while Sigmoidoscopy is advised every five years. Notably, these screenings can potentially reduce colorectal cancer fatalities by up to 30%.
