Special thanks to viewer Hannah Johnson for this amazing idea - today I'm doing a side-by-side comparison of my usual makeup techniques and the techniques I NEVER use (and usually say so but never really explain WHY) - and showing you guys why I shy away from them. That doesn't mean I'm not going to try to make it look good, and it doesn't mean I'm using products I don't love, either! It's actually mostly personal hangups, and I think I ended up liking the black smoky eye more than the other look at the end...ha!

I actually like the smokey eye on you. Maybe it's because it's only 1 eye so i'm not seeing the black making your eyes small. Would love to see you do a look using that green gold in a smokey eye to pull the eye forward.

Ohh my goodness, as a former ballet dancer I kept thinking to myself "that is *literally* how I did my stage makeup" when you were putting on the thicker side. Then at the end you totally called it as stage makeup! The only difference would be that: I would put a white line followed by a black line under my eyes, my eyebrows were mandated to be penciled in as BLACK (and I'm blonde! I cringed every time my director came around and told me my DARK BROWN eyebrows were too light), and a bright red lip. I too have large pointy lips so I never over-lined but plenty of other dancers did. The stage makeup of it all is why I so vehemently pushed makeup away for so long, but your videos ushered me timidly back into the world of painting my face. Thank you for helping me reclaim it :)

Also, I saw your instastories last night about another video and I definitely prefer your approach. Also, powder eyeliner is definitely a technique I prefer and learned from you.

This video is very interesting. I love your approach to skin, I am not a fan of heavy matte foundation and contouring. BUT I love the smokey eye on you! You look very sophisticated and elegant. I always loved a cool smokey eye on brown eyes. I would love to see a more natural "kackie-skin" with a nicer contour and a smokey eye. The lips ... I can't decide which side I like better.

As someone with dry skin, and thinks that slathering my face in an oil serum is one of life's small joys, just the thought of baking and what that would feel like on my face gives me the heebie jeebies lol Also part of the "Small and/or Hooded Eye Club" here, it took me a while to figure out how to adjust "youtuber guru" techniques with their huge eyes and miles of lid space to my own face I actually think the smoky eye and bolder lip is nice on you, it would be super pretty for a dressy night out type thing, full agreement on the fighting warm/cool tones though. Also loved the "They'll tell the church!" quote tossed in, that video gets me every time bahahaha Love this video/concept!! :)

When Tati put out her video yesterday of MAKEUP MISTAKES 🙄 she was throwing shade at blending your crease shade above your natural crease and getting too close to the eyebrow. I’m like girl you have LIDS. So much lid space. Some of us are trying to work with what we’ve got!

Ya, vloggers would benefit by clarifying such things, because no one technique works for everyone. For those new or less confident using a technique that fails *for them* is not helpful, and potentially hurtful on the path of learning about skincare, cosmetics, etc.

Am I being controversial if I say that I find that your smokey eye looks badass and that it makes your eye shine and bright ? While watching I kept looking at it and thought : " waow, her eye glitters. It looks like Bambis eyes " I totally understand that this doesn't have your preference, but to me, it really looks good on you. Maybe it doesn't look as good with both eyes in smokey ? Ok, so I definitely ‘get it’ in terms of your choices and techniques, so this was an excellent and informative video…but I gotta say that I am not at all mad at that “black swan” eye! It actually looks really great on you. Love the lip too. Agree that the foundation and blush/contour is quite theatrical so not realistic for IRL. So, I’d love to see you do a full face using the green neutral that you mentioned and upping the drama w your colors. Let’s just go for itttttt!!!!!! 😅

I'm so happy about the timing of this video considering the recent "guru" upload. Makeup is subjective, some people look BOMB in cool, smokey tones. I might (honestly have no idea), but I don't use them because I'm not confident seeing my own face with that look and therefore I look uncomfortable the entire time. My preferences have softened a lot over the past year and the bold, colorful looks I used to wear daily are no longer my vibe not because they look bad or the techniques are wrong. They're just not my style right now.

I definitely empathize with criticisms leaving a lasting impression. I wish people weren't so careless with their words. Makeup really is so personal - our preferences and associations with it. I know the way I do makeup is informed by several different factors, including my face and skin type, but also images that have left an impression on me over the years (from movies, tv, magazines, real life people, etc). I think an interesting idea for a tag would be for beauty content creators to answer questions about their personal makeup stories and their first makeup memories.

I avoid the same lip textures as well for the same reason. I LOVE using the bite crayons but in a different way. I basically put it on lightly, then smudge it out to form a light layer, and then if I want a little more I do another light wash. I love the color cognac when I’m feeling a little grungy. I also smudge it on the eyes and blend it out, then set with a similar powder. It’s gorgeous

As someone who contours with blush, especially with the bronzy heaven veil blush, I must say... yeah, it's definitely surreal. But I've also been seriously considering contouring with green so I can look like Vulcan, so yeah. However, I also layer it on top of other more matte blush, so that probably helps a lot.

Maybe it’s because I’m only seeing one eye but I just love how this Smokey eye looks on you! The bit of warmth in the VB topper changed everything, made it so much more flattering. This really is a good demonstration on how subtitle nuances in shade undertone tone can really make such a difference. I can’t believe I ever wore such full coverage foundation, really tho 15-20 years ago there wasn’t a whole lot to choose from, it was mainly matte & full coverage …never the right shade or undertone …I remember foundations always being way too pink or oxidizing orange!

Oh WOW. I never understood what seemed slightly off for me about most of Tati's makeup looks, and it's 100% because of the warm contour shade! Never understood what a difference that made before this side by side. As you said, it looks very theatrical, and a bit drag-y. I'm also extremely surprised how much the non-preferred techniques change your face shape. Again as you said, definitely brings out your angles and makes you less bouncy. The effect is almost a bit... severe? But I can see how it would work to someone's advantage if you had a bit of a baby face or were trying to offset a bit of roundness, or were just going for a model-esque glass-cutting bone structure, lol! Anyway, thanks! I really learned a lot from this!

When you posted the screen grab of this on instagram, I immediately though "I don't know how to feel!" because you've honed in on your preferred makeup so specifically that of course anything else is going to look foreign. I recently tried to do a "normal" smokey eye and yeah, even though my eyes aren't as close together as yours, they're still just as small and it looked awful on me! Which blows because it looks so cool on my friend who has giant eyeballs. You just gotta work with what you've got and adapt to your own face.

It’s interesting how much more work you have to put in when you use colors that don’t suit your skin tone, vs when the colors suit you and application is just so forgiving. Can I wear a warm brown eye, yes but it doesn’t look “at home” on my face, so I’ll have to work extremely hard to make it work, and still probably won’t like the end result.

I’ve also realized that when it comes to Matt complexions a Demi Matte in the Double Wear is much better than a full coverage blank out situation like Face Tape. A little skin showing up through foundation is so much better than the full blown coverage that was so popular 10 years ago. That said, the products and devices that help rosacea are MUCH BETTER as I don’t have to HIDE.

Hi Kackie. I know this is off topic, but I'm sitting here with swollen eyelids due what I believe is the NARS mini eyeshadow Orgasm palette. The colors looked amazing on me! But then, the allergic reaction happened. And I remembered you mentioning in a previous video that you are allergic to carmine. Is there room for a video in which you talk about this allergic reaction and how you avoid the carmine? What brand can you be certain that you don't have to worry about? Carmine can also be called other things in the ingredient list, and I'm sure you know this already. This allergy can't be that rare since I've heard another content creator mention it as well.

Oh shoot I’m sorry that happened to you! I’m not actually allergic to carmine though. It just makes funny red dots on my makeup over the day sometimes, but my skin doesn’t react.

dood! you're not gna like it, but just cz it shrinks your eye doesn't mean it's w/o virtue. cz lemme tell you. that shit is hot as fuck rn. in a non-COVID19 world I'd insist you go to Manhattan and JUST DANCE. ps... yeah... I have the tiniest violin rn. cz I want a fashion spread w a variety of this theme. pps. as someone who's v rigid in what I like (I love variety, but if a specific form of variety works I don't change em), this can be a staple base level for NYC glam. on a weekend go to the Village, St Mark's, Houston, even the financial district and you'll see ppl wear that kind of mighty makeup during the day I can't English cz my 3.5 yo phone's so cracked it feels like a Samsung edition cell puzzle. only w glass

I dunno....I really like the TF smokey eye before you went ham on the blush. You soooo can pull off that color. You might not be comfortable with it bc you rely so heavily on blush which to me is a cardinal sin with a smokey eye. Yeah, I'm just at odds here. Your receding eye is the one with the muddy red color. Sorry...confused here.

I have a similar eye shape , and i think i did a wayne goss tutorial that is more or less a half smoky eye with leaving the inner eye bare/ shiny/ or cream / light eyeshadow. I think it makes my eyes more almondy and intense. Also i use white eyeliner in the waterline. Or silver if it's a black and silver look. Anyway , i think you are very good at makeup , it's more a preference thing :)
