Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar, House, Designated Survivor, author of You Can’t Be Serious) discusses navigating and overcoming stereotypes and racial biases in Hollywood. He considers the feelings of motivation and anxiety that can stem from family expectations, how a lens of positivity can lead to less stress and ways to overcome apathy about making a societal impact. Mayim and Kal bond over their time at UCLA and working together on The Big Bang Theory. Kal opens up about the cultural phenomenon of the Harold & Kumar franchise, how he became involved in the Obama administration and being a late bloomer in terms of his sexuality.

If today’s episode with Kal Penn doesn’t show us the immense advantatges of multiculturalism, openness, multilingualism and anti-racism, no other will. How I ADORE this episode!💜 From my Mediterranean multilingual and mixed background, HURRAH for having this articulate, multifaceted guest! Tnx a lot, Mayim and Jonathan!

Kal Penn is a guy that when he speaks looks like he’s at a bar having a beer with you. Add at that group two amazing people as Mayim & JC (we knew today he’s Jonathan Michael btw) and you’ll have probably the most amazing hour and a half of your week. Taking a beer, I’ve watched, listened and learnt! Such a gem! 💎

Kal went to my HS (HHS! Shout out to Mr Carey!). Bar/bat mitzvah in this area during this time were off the hook. Living out west now people don't believe how crazy those were. It was a special diverse place to grow up. Most of us first / second generation Americans. We all got beat up in those halls . Love watching Kal and some of our other peers who made it big. It was a special place to grow up.

Huge Kal Penn fan on many levels. My jaw dropped when he causally mentioned his friend Chasten Buttigieg! 🤩 I loved Chasten’s book and Pete in general. I never thought of this political pairing, but I am down for it. And while I definitely appreciate identifying with other’s neurosis, it was equally enjoyable to hear that sometimes people are “normal” and still very interesting to listen to. Great episode!

I just started reading Kal’s book last week, so I was excited to see he was today’s guest! This interview was exactly what I thought it’d be- fun, but open & honest. I love when the guest is someone that I’ve enjoyed watching- seeing them here gives me more reasons to enjoy their work.

A quick funny story about ascents. I was in an elevator, and this east Asian young man steps in. In at the floor selection panel, so I asked what floor he wanted, and I hear this New Zealand voice give me the floor. I was taken aback, as the thought of Asians actually born in New Zealand was so weird to me. Now it seems weird that I thought such a thing was so unlikely.

So things i have been thinking about are: why does Mayim mention them propably having crossed paths in the context of the student alliance tables being close when wasnt welcome there because he was being judged for getting into arts. Also, why was Kal caught off guard when Mayim asked him the mental health question, when it is the general topic of the podcast! Wether i misunderstood both things somehow or not, i kept thinking about them so here i am writing it out. What do you think? (and also wether judging mayim nor kal, i think they are so cool, love them both❤️)

Dear sis Mayim, thank you very much for the episode, you're so swet and cool as usual, well as far as ı can see you guys know how to play bowling properly, dear sis, back in the day as a heavy metal musician and drummer ı had trained many students for some aditional income when ı was a studying in the college and there're even some teenagers who had produced heavy metal albums afterwards among those students. I don't like to talk for no reason, when ı've been talkin' about the fascism of the elite in California and especially in Hollywood it's based on some facts which perhaps you guys are not aware of, yet,so let's explain it with a simple example, for instance presume for a moment that the Californian elite wants to insult me by implying that ı'm a polar bear, lol. Well suddenly we start to see polar bears everywhere including commercials of the companies on tv channels, movies, tv series, talk shows, daily newspapers, updates and even on their commercial trucks even here in this city in Turkey that's called as fascim in my book and in my point of view, that is a sort of and furthermore harrasement ı believe it's pretty damaging and depressive which is against civil rights, Yes it is a kind of fascism and even worse than Mussoloni fascism because Mussolini fascism was only in charge in the country of Italy however this one is globally, which means global fascism.i In short this is manipulation and control of the whole system globally from one hand and by a few people, which might even considered to be as true fascism,We're used to see different opinions, alternate ideas, choises and options in the classic western democracies which is the regular as normal version of this freaky nightmare show. In this case fo ourr example there should be at least a few some other opposing ideas and opinions for my benefit and in behalf of me claiming that ı'm not a polar beer, that's an indispensable rule for democrasies. Another thing, they know what ı'm gonna do or what ı'm gonna say next before ı do it or say it in other words, they control and manipulate time somehow perhaps from another dimension without the knowledge and authority od the public eye, we the people? So ı still claim that Hollywood and California elite are fascists unless they change their behavior in a good manner and positive direction and besides they should disclose everything they know about their elite secrest to the public immadiately, thanl you very much, with my sincere and best regards dear friend. fuck the system, fuck you Hollywood and the %1 super rich elite, primitive oil enegy companies like Exxon, weapon industry, etc.

@@Greens5511 Ask Mayim to accept them, pal, not me. Probably spelling one’s name correctly is the first respect you pay at a person. Said that..it would be great to have here Will Smith’s wife, whose alopecia is giving her quite Mental Health (this podcast is about it) issues..And then we can discuse the limits of “humor”, bc I can’t imagine any so called “humorist” laughing live with millions of people worldwide watching at a balding person dealing with cancer, for example…Said that too, Will Smith reaction was to me, absolutely out of place.

Kal pulling that director aside to not do the Indian accent on Sabrina reminds me of the time I tried to unionize a company I worked for by including management.
