Wow. I thought I had all of Kansas’s music but I’d never heard this. The Wall is one of my all time favorites. So interesting how he used that “outtro”. Steve’s voice is magic!

and just have to say its mindblowing to just think this was before anyone had ever heard or even thought of The Wall... so amazing to hear that familiar instrumental part and remind yourself how early this is.. wow

This song is hauntingly beautiful and I absolutely love everything about it. If only it made it onto an album. I have listened to it countless times trying to make out as many lyrics as I can and this is what I've got. 1st verse Here I stand behind these walls (unsure) I'm confused and so afraid But I can see no end in sight 1st chorus (unfortunately it is very hard to make out what they are singing, save for "love is a dream" at the end) 2nd verse This illusion haunts my life There's little joy in things I do I want him to set me free I gave my soul away to you 2nd chorus Soak it in and truth will spell Where is all the love right now (unsure) Love is a dream (The Wall instrumental) 3rd verse We pretend to conquer all Living lies and fantasies Blinded by our own charade We chase the rainbow 'til it falls 3rd chorus Wait until you're old and grey Watch your lifetime wisp away Never know what words to say But love is a dream A dream Just a dream Just a dream Just a dream

Thank you. I listen to all these old Kansas demos and concert audios trying desperately to make out the lyrics to obscure songs.

This is another example of "Leftoverture" being the perfect name for the album! Aside from the well known story of "Magnum Opus" being a collection of "leftover" parts, The Wall was made up from a "leftover" part of this song!

Hoch Auditorium is also where the Kansas Jayhawks used to play basketball until Allen Fieldhouse opened in 1955. The band Kansas also played a concert in Allen Fieldhouse in the spring of 1981.

Why this song was not recorded for the first Kansas album, I'll never know. It would have been a top five single at the most. Hell, Bringing It Back was tailor made for Rock Radio at that time.

Man...thanks for posting this. I've never heard this song before and I really like it. A couple of observations.....I wonder if the middle part, which went on to become the ending for The Wall, was written for this song? It seems extreme to cannibalize a song for another unless they just didn't think this song worked. Also, Steve Walsh's vocals sound effortless. People that never saw Kansas live in the 70's don't have a concept of his vocal abilities and his acrobatics. There was never a keyboard player that jumped and kicked and moved and put on a show the way he did!

Man, I couldn't disagree more but that's OK. To each his own. Song For America is not only my favorite Kansas song but my favorite song period! Ever since I 1st heard it in 1975! Lamplight is amazing but I think they made the right choice for the title of the album. Lonely Street is by far the best Walsh penned song and one of my all time favorite blues/rock #'s. This is a great song and it puzzles me why it was never used! Every time I start to figure out the words to this I end up quitting.

The misfortune of timing! They were still the opening act for the most part until Leftoverture so most of their sets were 45 minutes or so and had to be pared down. This one just didn't make the rotation. Most of their songs were 7,8,10,12 minute diddys so the set list was short even for this hour and a half show!

Kyle wrote a few minutes ago: "More news on my dad -- he had a massive stroke. We don't know how long he was on the floor before my mom found him, but we are thinking he wasn't there for long because ...of the severity of the stroke. Today he kind of mumbled some broken sentences that were hard to understand, but there were strung sentences kind of in there.

I think rickyon would agree with me that the Kansas family of bands have a body of unreleased material more impressive than the entire body of work of most other bands (by the way, I think Lynyrd Skynyrd comes awfully close in the amount of great unreleased material.)

A person does not have to be deceased for you to make a tribute to him. Do you really think that I thought that Kerry had passed away? I assure you I was on top of the situation with Kerry every step of the way. You should think about changing that username.
