When did Iyengars came to Karnataka? 1) Iyengars came to Karnataka in large numbers when Ramanujacharya (Ramanuja) came to Karnataka in the 12th century. To be more precise, he came to Karnataka in the year 1133 when the Chola king Kulottunga II ascended the throne. There are some legends that say that Ramanujacharya was forced out by the Chola king since the Chola king was a Shaivaite and Ramanujacharya was a Vaishnavite. He came in contact with the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana. Vishnuvardhana was originally a Jain but after coming in contact with the great Acharya, embraced the Vaishnava faith and it was actually the Acharya who named him as “Vishnuvardhana”. Vishnuvardhana gave out lands to the Acharya throughout his kingdom so that his followers could settle. A Srivaishnava centre was set up in Melukote and Ramanujacharya himself stayed there for 14 years. Even today, the Kannadiga Iyengars or rather the Iyengars who are native to Karnataka are from the places where the Hoysala Empire was most powerful. Most of the Iyengars in Karnataka are from Hassan, Mandya, and Mysuru districts, all of which are places where there is a significant influence of the Hoysalas. There are two major categories of Iyengars in Karnataka as per my knowledge. The Hebbar Iyengars who are typically found in Hassan district and Mandyam Iyengars who are typically found in Mysuru and Mandya districts. 2) During the Muslim Invasion of the Srirangam Temple, Pillai Lokacharyar and a few others made a big trip of South India with the idol of Nam Perumal(protecting it from being taken away) , whereas Swami Desikan came to Satyagalam (near Kollegala). Some of the people who came might have stayed back. This was around 1350 CE. 3) Due to Bengaluru becoming an IT Hub, many people have migrated in search of jobs or due to the jobs, and this is in the past 50 years.

@sumathigovindsrsj1947. Yes. It is saddening to see several youngsters who had joined Veda Patasalai and completed 10 or 12 year course do not get brides as girls do not come forward to marry such boys . I know several such boys versed in the Vedas are driven to be bacholars even after completing 30--35 years of age . There are cases remaining brahmacharis of more than 45 years. This is a sad commentary on the rigorous Vedic studies which do not come easily . There doesn't appear to be any solution.20.11.24

When Ramanujacharya was exiled from Tamil Nadu, our Hoysala King Bitti deva gave him and his followers refuge and allowed them to practice their philosophy. Karnataka and Kannadigas always show love and mercy to people in distress. Mandya Iyengars have also contributed to the place with their culture, heritage and love to Kannada and Karnataka. Only few betray.

When did Iyengars came to Karnataka? 1). Iyengars came to Karnataka in large numbers when Ramanujacharya (Ramanuja) came to Karnataka in the 12th century. 2). During the Muslim Invasion of the Srirangam Temple, Pillai Lokacharyar and a few others made a big trip of South India with the idol of Nam Perumal(protecting it from being taken away) , whereas Swami Desikan came to Satyagalam (near Kollegala). Some of the people who came might have stayed back. This was around 1350 CE. 3). Due to Bengaluru becoming an IT Hub, many people have migrated in search of jobs or due to the jobs, and this is in the past 50 years.

Additionally, Ramanujacharya had an adopted daughter Lakshmi whom he married to Vishnuvardhana. Shanthala was the main reason for the spread of Jainism. The wodeyars, Royal family of Mysore gave patronage to Iyengars. The kings gave agraharams, buildings for temples, mathas etc. There are both parakala and ahobila mathas next to Jaganmohana palace granted by wodeyars in Mysore.

The young woman is a perfect Chennaite, a lover of Tamil films. About Jeyalalitha, she is from Mysore Iyengar community. That is all. About her connection with this melkotta, we may assume the Mysore Iyengar orginated from Melkottai and spilt over to Mysore. Once they left Melkotta, they never turned back. Her parents are from Mysore. Her relations are still living in Mysore. That's all.
