Josh Hartnett is the best part about this movie. He is charismatic, and has such a sweet relationship with his daughter, and you find yourself rooting for him, despite him being the clear baddie. It reminds me of "You", and Penn Badgley.

How exactly did the film portray this guy as charismatic and a “sweet relationship” with his daughter, by purchasing floor tickets….my man was literally not present during the concert and was acting weird/strange around her. Maybe his ability isn’t exactly teleportation, but rather having the ability to escape from any trap that he’s faced with. Throughout the movie, at least for me, I was always on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what he would do next to escape. The concert, the tunnel in the closet, and escaping the limo I thought were really cool. And even at the end of the movie he escapees again, which gives us, the audience, the impression that this guy will always escape. He’ll always find a way to escape anything presented to him, I found myself rooting for him almost the whole movie as well lol. Overall I really enjoyed this movie, I personally love suspense ‘on the edge of your seat’ movies even if they’re a little dumb at times. Josh’s character still doesn’t make sense to me and neither does the plot or what actually happened, but that’s what I love about it. He has already compromised himself by letting Lady Raven take charge of the situation. Coopers character is mentally challenged at best for letting any of the events unfold. We had no character set up, no back story but an implication of a back story hinted at by the short exchange in his garage. What is crazy is that the FBI has no real evidence on him and without any evidence, how do they know for a fact that it's him?. Poorly executed scene after poorly executed scene. The character tells extremely dumb lies to his daughter and only later does he come up with decent excuses which by this time, his daughter knows he is acting weird. Poor dialogue, poor plot, poor side characters who are almost meme like in their nature. Hell, we got more backstory about how his daughter had a falling out with some of her school friends which generates more brief npc dialogue but creates doesn't develop characters or story. The way his daughter turns into a npc so he can slink away to push a girl down some stairs... And lets not forget, The FBI creating a fake concert to potentially trap one serial killer, by employing hundreds of officers, only to leave him unsupervised in the back of the truck. Not a single aspect of this movies make sense until you realize Saleka is M nights daughter
@Alicetheamethyst3 ай бұрын
@eltavish the daughter would never suspect her father, and I think it's more a boomer/gen x trait to gaslight their children enough not to really question them, BUT his daughter turning into a npc after she finds out is ridiculous as she seems so attached to her father.

It does have some plot holes/illogical turns, but it's so brilliantly casted and well written otherwise, that it didn't bother me too much. Like you mention, it also seems to have been done on purpose, to create comedy/a way into another great scene. I also really appreciate that tween girls are not written in a derogatory way in this film (as so often in society in general) - they are explored as real people, resourceful and funny. That they created a teen pop star and a concept for a concert that emulated fandom/concerts/real pop stars, was very true to life, imo.

And contrary to popular opinion, I actually enjoyed the second half of the film more than the first half. The concert kinda made me cringe. The music was great though. Yes, Josh had to carry this film and he did an amazing job, but him having to carry the film doesn't make it a bad film. He actually made this film good. His ability to act as a convincing psychopath was bone chilling. His calm and cool attitude, and that smile... He should get an award for his role in this film. He did say he studied the Hare Psychopathy Checklist and damn it shows. As for "The music wasn't great", i would've thought so too if I only heard the music in the film, but I listened to the actual album and for an artist that I've never heard of, she is incredibly talented as a composer/songwriter/and vocalist. There are some really interesting instrumental pieces in songs like "Save Me" with the trombones or trumpets. The arrangements were good.

I think everything Shyamalan is doing here is completely intentional and it works brilliantly. Hartnett absolutely makes this movie, his performance is so intrinsic with the film. Everything about the film has this awkward, uncomfortable energy, it puts us right in the headspace of the killer so that even though he's a little underdeveloped, we still feel close and the story becomes far more personal. It almost makes you root for the killer even though realistic we should want him to get caught. We need more of this Shyamalan, he's at his best when he takes a simple premise and injects his signature style into it and not solely trying to just one up the audience at every turn.

Nothing half good about Last Jedi or Indy 5. Absolutely baffling how the few people who actually saw them, at THIS point and considering the "popularity" of Disney, can think they're anything more than dumpster juice.

@@reservoirdude92 there are a lot of really great scenes in both movies imo, plus some good story elements, but there are also terribles one too, so kinda like this movie

I really did like this one. It seemed to me that it all played like myth or a tale, where all the little parts don't add up and has that thin dream-like atmosphere, but it's larger than the sum of its parts. It is really goofy and funny, but also works on an emotional level. I was quite surprised at the depth of the Butcher's psyche they went through the trouble of displaying at the end.

I wish it was better since the premise is a really good hook

This commentary was so funny bc the “everything being off” is so true ……. “There might be costumes and things”…. I LOST IT

I kinda saw it coming that the father, Cooper, was the serial killer when he talked to the employee that the concert was a trap set up for him. But I think the movie is still fun and enjoyable to watch. At first I thought, "okay, this guy is the killer, and plot twist being is that everyone else knows already". He seems like a weirdo and look like one of those bad guys who would end up caught, but turned out to be a great escapist. I love this movie.

Is it just me that feels like M Night was inspired by the Hitman games for this film? The concert is literally a hitman level, he's changing disguises to get into different areas, causing distractions.

0:45 I definitely agree that M Night is very creative, but I thought it is important to mention that old is an adaptation of the graphic novel Sandcastles.

Hubs and I love it. So much fun watching M Night’s take on the thriller genre with its tongue in cheek screenplay and over the top brilliant campy Hartnett performance. A fun ride!

No movie that has this many plot conveniences can be considered good, and to say the movie is "high" feels like a cope to mask those issues. There is nothing to establish that this movie is trying to be otherworldly. Maybe he is just a bad writer?

This movie was about how superstars are complex and we love only the fronts the present. The killer as well as the performers all put on a calculated and controlled show.

Ps Thank you for “getting it.” It’s a wonderfully campy movie, even with the miscasting of Saleka.

I think this is in the Unbreakable universe. Another big clue was the color scheme..... Unbreakable blue, Split, Yellow, Glass Purple,.....Trap Red. Almost every scene had a red tint to it. After I saw it again I started to notice a lot of hidden elements of the Unbreakable universe.

If you watch Twin Peaks, you'll notice that it is a goofy, funny, scary horror thriller. That's what this movie is too. And both have a main character named Cooper. Not a coincidence.

Shyamalan didn’t come up with the premise for “Old.” It’s based on a graphic novel which is excellent and worth checking out.

Something that I think would have worked better, is instead of a concert….it was a sporting event. It adds the clock into the equation. He only has so much time to find a way out. The clock counting down and I think the whole movie should have been in the stadium. But I liked the movie.

This is a great movie! The first shyamalan movie that works with a real plot twist which is having no plot twist. It's amazing how he forced me to waste my time until the end. So much art.

The critique of Josh Hartnett’s delivery being intentionally cringeworthy and off putting because his character is a monster who is trying so damn hard to be a man is interesting and definitely introduces a different way of looking at his performance…but that doesn’t excuse everyone else’s performances from being completely lackluster.

It was a fun movie but I felt like it spent way too much time overtly explaining away plot holes even tho they still had a loooot. Felt like they coulda just shown a lot more than actually telling Like shyamalans own dialogue of him being the uncle and oh the mothers brother cause the dad left or whatever….like why are we getting this spoon fed to us awkwardly?
