At 7:36:11 a little BTS about why he doesn't say i love you back: In the original japanese script Yuna actually says Arigatou (Thank You), it was actually the localization director who translated the game to english that suggested that change, the game director was resistant at first stating that it was written that way because in japanese culture they don't say it like that in front of others etc, the localization director actually insisted on that change stating that it would increase the emotional weight of the scene and eventually they went along with it in the english dub.

In Japan, saying "I love you" to someone was almost unheard of in everyday life until recently. Although people might tell someone they liked them, the concept of love was not so common. Until 100 years ago, just as saying "The moon is beautiful" was an expression of love for someone, it was considered beautiful to remain modest even when expressing affection for someone. Recently, due to the influence of Western culture, it is becoming more and more natural to use the word "I love you."

This game is still at the top of Final Fantasy for me. I'm so glad you enjoyed this like I did. As far as "To Zanarkand" goes, its definitely the saddest piano music once you start linking it's own beauty to the sadness of this game. I don't know a single person who has finished this game who wasn't a wreck after completing it. Thanks for putting yourself out there and not trying to hide your emotions throughout this.

My name is Jon. I wasn’t an emotional wreck. I was glad I didn’t have to play anymore of this boring game with all of its painfully boring mechanics and one of the dullest protagonists in the final fantasy universe. A tiny world, a handcuffing battle system, a group of characters who are all way more interesting than the main character, side quests of absolute dullness. It’s the Attack of the Clones of the games between 6-12 for me. So many people trying to convince themselves that it’s some transcendent experience because they saw it when they were in puberty, but an ultimately shallow experience. Just my opinion of course

Your thoughts made me literally think about things I'd never considered before, despite having played this game at launch and watching numerous breakdowns. It was also really fun watching how you built your characters in the sphere grid. Your Wakka is a proper powerhouse lol. Looking forward to potential side content! With Wakka being so buff and Tidus with a Doible AP weapon, you can make a lot happen fairly quickly. However, the grind for fortune spheres actually sucks lol.

Aaaaand we're finally here. The Ending Theme during the finale makes it hit so much harder, the song fits so damn well in it hahaha. And Wakka not being able to even watch as Tidus is about to jump and disappear also breaks me. He finds this new guy who looks a lot like his brother and also shares his passion to blitzball, only to lose this "second brother" again at the end. I loved every second of your gameplay and how you got into every little detail of the story and dialogues, it made the experience so much richer. Thank you for sharing it with us! :)

There’s a couple of interviews with Kazushige Nojima, the head writer and Alexander O. Smith the head translator and localizer. In Japanese, Yuna says “ありがとう” or “thank you” instead of “I love you.” Generally, in Japan, you don’t directly share your feelings, especially if you’re as reserved and formal as Yuna is, so saying “thank you” is very much how a proper Japanese lady would say “I love you.” Obviously, this particular bit of cultural nuance feels a bit weird in English, so Smith just had her say it.

More than 2 decades ago, I played FFX on my Playstation 2 with no expectations... Through this game, I have acquired a discerning and refined appreciation of music, voice acting, and storytelling. Not to mention that it opened the door to my feelings of empathy, pain, and sadness. To this day, no game, no narrative, no masterpiece comes close to my heart than Final Fantasy X. Thank you for helping me relive this journey once again. I'm so glad that it struck you as it did as it did me when I was a child. And you're right, it hits way harder when you're an adult, and you've gone a long way. I didn't even know that you can feel this way from a story delivered within a game. Enjoy the "post game" content! Will definitely be tuning in to see all the blitz ball and game overs. 🤣

I challenge anyone who doesn't think video games are a valid story medium to play this game start to finish and still hold that opinion. It being a video game, where we travel on the pilgrimage too, fighting right alongside them, I argue actually strengthens our bonds with these characters in a way movies or even books can't replicate. Fun fact: the piano solo that plays during "The End" screen (and also plays in the game's intro) wasn't composed for Final Fantasy X, but for composer Nobuo Uematsu's friend. The music ended up being too somber for what his friend needed, and it ended up being repurposed for this game. It's titled "Zanarkand" (often translated as "To Zanarkand"). Also, the song during the Braska's Final Aeon battle also plays during Tidus's introduction scene (where he's playing blitzball). It's called "Otherworld". Finally, "Suteki Da Ne?" is the song you said you wanted to look up the lyrics to. They're pretty widely available online. Thank you for sharing the beautiful journey with us. FFX is one of my absolute favorites in the series, and it'll always be special to me as my first FF ever. I wish I could have warned you how badly this one would hurt at the end, but y'know, spoilers.

It was a great play through. What I really enjoy about the story is how much we see Tidus change to a person who understands where Yuna was at the start of the story. When he learned that Yuna was willing to sacrifice her life for others he could not understand why she would do this and refused to accept it. But in the end, he realized that saving her and the rest of Spira would require the same sacrifice from him, he resolves to make the exact same sacrifice that he refused to accept earlier in the story.

All this already so breathtakingly beautiful and unrivalled, then the game finds such a perfect ending, with this masterful musical variation of To Zanarkand (ending theme)... to this day and forever my favourite game and the most beautiful story, at least for me.. thank you for playing that masterpiece, it was a joy watching your videos

I've finished watching just now. There are so many things I want to say about this game but somehow all of them fall short so I'll just say this: thank you. For sharing your experience. For your reaction. Your feelings in this reaction I understand well and had them myself. Like me, I know you will need time between final fantasy games to process what happened. There's so much I want to say about X-2 but I won't of course. And I am so incredibly hyped for 9 and then 8. The hardest part now is having to wait for your reactions to them because they are both absolute masterpieces in their own rights but very different to this and each other. The journey will not disappoint you. I just almost wish you'd get on with them lol. Thank you Kasta. Truly. ❤

The "I love you" line was a liberty the english translation took. In the original japanese script Yuna says "Thank you". That´s why he doesn´t say it back, even though we can all agree that is what both characters feel. Thank you for this fantastic playthrough. I first finished FFX back in 2002 and to this day i still get emotional every single time i hear To Zanarkand.

It's always interesting to hear the "Thank you" vs "I love you" translation conversation. I know it was a subject of much discussion at the end of FFVII Rebirth too.

Indeed it was. Back then though not many games of this size had a german dub. So we got the "I love you" but the subtitles said "Danke" (Thank you), because they were often translatetd directly from japanese. A lot of the subtitles didn´t match at all because of that. They later changed it to "Ich liebe dich" (I love you) in the HD remaster.

It really is truly incredible the complexity of the emotion this story creates, it's almost incomprehensible. It's crazy how cathartic and addictive it is, to feel so human... I think that's why so many people will continue to play through this game again and again and again and again, probably for the rest of their lives, I'm sure I will... and I'll always cry.

I always loved how the ending didn't give you one big tearjerker moment but instead several smaller salt-in-the-wound details, and I think that's why it still emotionally resonates today. It tells the ending the same way the pain of losing someone presents in myriad ways and never truly leaves us. When she's hurting from the fall and a fayth crosses right in front of her eyes, almost taunting her. The way Tidus can't perfectly hug Yuna before he goes because he can't feel her and overlaps her form a little. The way the whistles have a perfect rhythm and more power to tip off that she's been practicing for weeks. The way Lulu has to just come get her to bring her back to real life when everyone else has moved on. It's those priceless details, man.

Final Fantasy is really something special. It's an experience that none of us will forget, and watching someone experience it for their first time, in a way we get to relive that experience through them. I've watched every episode so far, Kasta has shown geniune love for the game, characters, the world, and music. It's been such an interesting and fun playthrough, and I (we) as a fan, appreciate that its been treated by someone like Kasta. There been a few face palm moments, and the grid sphere makes my OCD go nuts, but the laughs, the "ahhh moments" and now for the tears. Glad to have been part of the journey.

Kasta, getting to experience this story alongside you has been an absolute honour! I was 8 years old the first time I played through FFX and I was inconsolable after that ending. I have seen it countless times now over the years and I still cried with you this time. The moment Yuna falls through Tidus just wrecks me, and the enitre music score for the ending is so beautifully emotional. Watching you connect so strongly to these characters, I knew this story was going to impact you really hard, and I'm so glad it didn't disappoint. You had so many amazing insights to the story and the characters as you played, and even your...less than conventional methods were entertaining to watch 🤣 I'm so excited for the future of your journey through the other final Fantasy games!

Thanks for this LP. This is my favorite game of all time, and your series helped me appreciate it even more. Stories this good are meant to teach us loss and hardship, hope and love, so that we may weather and appreciate our lives however cruel and ugly they may be at times. They teach us to compartmentalize the human experience without having to suffer the hard way ourselves. To live is to suffer; to survive is to find meaning in the suffering. Final Fantasy X exemplifies this perfectly. I can't wait for you to play X-2 and see a free Spira.

I love this game so much. I can't thank you enough for sharing your reaction to this ending with the world. It's everything I've felt every time I've played it. As a man, we'd give anything to go out sacrificing our lives for those we love. That's why this game has stood the test of time in story. Tidus was full of life, hope and optimism. He had his scars and pain, but he never let if phase him. Then he fell in love, and found out the girl he fell in love with was on a journey to give her life to save the world. He then began a journey that would save the world, but he was focused on saving her. Even if that meant he ceased to exist, he was determined to save her. We all want to be that kind of hero.

This has been by far (and I mean, BY FAR!) the best FFX playthrough from another person I have ever experienced. This story, after 24 years, still manages to convey all of what this pilgrimage was about. A pilgrimage full of joy, just as Yuna wanted it, full of love, friendship and trust. A pilgrimage full of growth, from Tidus evolving into the responsible hero he was supposed to become, to Wakka overcoming his prejudices, from Kimahri becoming a strong and wise Ronso to Yuna's resolve to save Spira even after abandoning the precepts, paralleling the growth Braska, Auron and Jecht experienced ten years before. But most of all, a pilgrimage full of loss. Wakka having to say goodbye to his new brother only a year after Chappu, Rikku having her Home taken away from her, Kimahri seeing all the Ronso erased by Seymour. And of course, Yuna and Tidus separating in this finale, which still makes me cry every single time, even after the dozens of times I played the game through the years. We spent the whole game worrying about Yuna and the final summoning, and when we find a solution to that, it's Tidus that has to go. You have managed to grasp every moment, every emotion the game tried to convey, without missing any details about the story and, in fact, anticipating many events. Your takes on several of the game plot points were coming from a greatly empathetic and understanding place. The fact that you managed to grasp so much of the story on a first playthrough is really impressive, no matter how much experience you had with other games' stories. The understanding of actual gameplay mechanics was probably the only weak point of this series, but it was still good enough to breeze through the main story so who cares if you used Wakka as the Auron and Kimahri as the Rikku in the end. Thanks for the series, looking forward to seeing more of the post-game content! Boy, I love this game so much, can you tell?

Oh, One of the coolest features of replaying this game. you can load your primers from a previous save and understand every al bhed dialog right from very start of game. That's why you can read primers from memory cards. There was also this comrodery back in day where We'd borrow our friends memory cards to load primers they found we missed and vice versa to complete our primers. "do you have 4? i missed 4" "yeah I got 4, did you find 13?". That's a memory some of us have from back in day.

Maggie, thank you so much for sharing your first time experiences with us. These games have always had a place in my heart and it’s awesome to see other people discover the passion us long time fans always held. Had I not played FFVII first, and it being my initial introduction to RPG style games, I probably would have loved this one more. FFX is truly a masterpiece. I know you already have a list of games you’re doing which include FFIX and FFX-2. IX was awesome as well and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with that story as you always have. X-2 is one I never played fully… it was just a bit too girly for me. Not that that’s a bad thing, it just wasn’t for me. Please keep in mind however that FFX and X-2 were both PS2 games and the first Final Fantasy games that were voice acted. As you play older titles such as IX, they are all text based and may feel a bit more clunky on controls. I look forward to hearing your voice acting for each of the characters.
