Bless your heart, Torie. When your dad had harnessed up the awning, that had been ripped off by the tree, you told your dad, he had done a good job. Daughters like you, are a blessing to any fathers heart. Marc! You had me crying with laughter, while Tricia was driving through all of the tool booths. Keep on rocking, my hero's.

Yes, Tori is a good girl. We're lucky. All the kids wrote some great Christmas letters to Trish and I. Yes, those tolls were shocking! In hind sight... an Easy Pass would have been good to get, but would not have made for an interesting video :) Thanks for your comment.

A tip I got from other RVers is to place a flexible plastic cutting sheet at the back of the freezer to collect ice. When time to defrost just remove ice covered cutting sheet and dump ice into sink. I am trying it now, but haven't collected enough ice to verify. Love your videos...love joining you on the adventure and the commentary is G R E A T!

You're not alone as far tail swing sagas. We moved up to a 35' class A from a 31' and within 5 weeks of owning it, I scrapped the driver's side rear tail end on a cement post at a gas station. It didn't look too bad but cost $5 grand to fix. Thank goodness for good insurance. I was pretty bummed and embarrassed until it got fixed. I'm a lot more aware of cornering now and in tight gas stations one of us stands outside the RV directing.
@hermes65878 жыл бұрын
I have an even better tip for you to defrost your freezer. Get yourself the largest plastic cutting board that will fit in the back of your freezer (standing up against the back of the freezer) and place it there. The frost and/or any ice will form on it rather than on the back of the freezer. When it is time, simply remove it, defrost it and put it back in. No fuss no muss & quick.

We might already have the perfect one. Thanks! Good tip.

OMG!!!! I am DYING about the toll situation!!! LOL!!! "The roads are so smooth! They are so well maintained!" "Drive safe? How can you when you're being shaken down like this?" As a California Bay Area resident, for a decade I would pay TWO tolls (Carquinez and Bay Bridges) a DAY to get to and from work in SF. This toll episode SPOKE to me!! Hahahaha!!!

I enjoy your post's to the east coast. years ago my wife and I traveled from south Florida to new Jersey many times, using the same route you used from New York to Baltimore. The cost we couldn't change but the delays at toll booths was greatly improved upon by subscribing to electronic toll service(I don't remember the name) and bypassing the lines via the express lanes.

Thanks for anther great episode. I really enjoyed it. When we got our first RV, our insurance agent told us that awnings are the number one insurance claim for RVs. Thirty+ years of constant tractor-trailer refresher training has made me hyper aware of Tail Swing. I have, luckily, never had a tail swing incident. Other incidents & accidents, yes, but never tail swing. I was heading up the East Coast to Maine in the Semi one time, and was so frustrated with all the tolls that I just exited the freeway, and drove from Virginia to Maine on US 1. Went through every little town along the coast, and it was awesome, but slow. Better Days

For the freezer- - I've heard to get those cheap flexible cutting mats at Dollar Tree or WM, and cut them to fit in your freezer. Then when you need to defrost, just pull them out and the frost will slide or pop off of them. I think you can scotch tape them to the sides of the freezer.

Set up your navigation system and schedule to avoid tolls and traffic. The eastern US is more expensive and crowded the closer you get to the coast. Going through cities between 2am and 4am will have less traffic but there will be less services open also.

After watching the suffering with the toll roads all I could think was "God Bless Texas." Here in the North Texas area we have some toll roads but there are other routes to take as options. I call the toll roads around here the 2%er' Highways. They are certainly not "freeways" and they do little to alleviate the congestion on the plebeian roads.

Next time stay at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson, NJ, less then an hour driving to Manhattan. Or train service from the Morristown area. We live in the northern NJ area, we take 78 west to the northeast extension of the PA turnpike, this puts you a little south of Phily, a lot less tolls and a nicer ride. Or.. by Trenton take 295, it runs parallel to the turnpike and no tolls.

I've been told by multiple AC and appliance folks not to do this method for thawing because it can cause damage to the innerworkings of the refrigerator since they work in a gas delta. Heating a spot which should be cool can overpressure a system and cause the blowoff to pop. My AC coils used to freeze over on my AC on my home and I had a fridge which would ice up similar to yours.

Keep Your Daydream Pretty close. It's Larchmont Yacht Club. I like to follow the places, to see what would be interesting to add to my itinerary. You guys are my favorite channel, and I got so many great tips from your trip......!!! I began following Chris & G, then a few others, like His and Hers Alaska; Less Junk, More Journey; The Motorhome Experiment; Great Escape; Wanderlust Estate; Technomadia, and others that I don't follow anymore, like Gone with the Wynns, since they went to a catamaran. Because of you all, now my itinerary has lots of great tips, from all the channels, with the corresponding initials. eg: Larchmont Yacht Club - KYD I hope one day I can meet everybody and thank in person not only for the tips, but for the great entertainment.

Be sure to check out the KYD website and you can click episodes and then filter by RV for only RV related episodes. Also on iTunes to listen while you drive. Yeah, that Yacht Club was nice and the town was charming. Good "slow travel" destination or a place to visit while getting to your next destination. Keep an eye out for the Miami episode soon. The Everglades tour we did is a must do. FL delivered on our top 10 list. Stay tuned!

Keep Your Daydream Hi, Thanks for the tips. I'll check their podcasts. Gotta confess that I tried listening to one, but I'm more into videos and traveling tips, attractions, etc.... These aren't the only channels I follow. Only the RV channels. We just kicked the corrupt party off the presidency here in Brazil, so, there are lots of videos and news to follow. There's way more content than a human being can keep up with. I have so many attractions on my itinerary, in the US and Canada, that it would take a few years to see/do everything. I began with TripAdvisor years ago. Then, moved to Roadside America. Going through each state... Can you imagine how many pins I have on that Google Earth itinerary?? Every museum, every attraction, every waterfall, cave, national park, monument, and every interesting thing to see/do in the US and Canada.... I'll try to do as many as possible whenever I get to begin the trip....

We lost that awning at Normandy Farms - $500 repair at the time. After that storm, we rolled the awning up every time we heard the words "chance of a thunderstorm" ⛈

Uhg. That's what I thought this would cost... Normandy Farms is kinda pricey to be stuck in the rain!

Really sorry for your mishap. If you tow long enough, something will happen. Take care and enjoy.

Good point. I now have one less mistake to make! I parted too close to the tree (and knew it was there). But I forgot that I backed-up 5 feet before leaving the curb. The tree shouldn't have been a problem where I was parked. Should have mentioned that in the video, but it was hard to think in the moment. Thx for the comment.

A little tip for traveling the on the east coast if you get a EZPass you actually get a little bit of a discount on tolls and I think it works in Indiana as well but don't quote me on that. Also as a bonus you save a little bit of time because its all automatic.

I have a 36ft travel trailer, and I am always afraid to destroy the tail in a turn, that's why I install 4 wireless cameras two on the back of the rv and 1 on each side, so I can see all around the rv. My advice for you
@KeepYourDaydream7 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea. What kind of cameras did you install. I'd be interested in that upgrade. This accident was a bummer bc I knew the tree was there, but forgot that I backed up before pulling away from the curb. Err.

were embarking on a 17,000 mile RV trip to the lower 48 states. I already planned on having an envelope of cash for camp sites, and another for toll fees. Looks like at this rate my toll envelope might need to be beefed up a bit more than I calculated.
@KeepYourDaydream8 жыл бұрын
Our trip was exactly 17,000 miles too. The tolls for entire trip were probably $200 tops. All in all... not bad for spending so much time in Chicago, Maine, Boston, NJ, New York, Delaware, DC, and FL. An EZ pass would have taken the feeling of getting fleeced out of the equation and also avoided the confusion of which lane to be in based on cash/card. Congrats on your upcoming trip. You're going to have a blast!

Hubby hit a tree with the edge of our awning in Pennsylvania last year (they don't trim their damn trees next to the tiny two-lane roads. Expensive to replace. Could always have been worse, though.

Yes, could have been much worst a good reminder. The awning is off now and I need to call to get the quote.

OMGOODNESS. Leaving NYC with walking, underground and train reminds me of London. Carrying our luggage and all. Whew. My sister actually got caught in the doors in the tube. I was pulling on her from behind. I thought I was going to be abandoned in London. Yikes. Your sailing trip was awesome. How did you arrange it? We have done the eastern states several times and griped about the tolls. We were in a 🚗 so can imagine your angst. I am so very sorry about your awning. Hope it won't be too pricey to repair. Loved seeing Maddie enjoy the grass and freedom. Take care. Hugs to all. Great video as usual.

PaTTY STErNJAC OB We can't wait to go to London. We saw on fbook that Totem was headed to New York. We were coordinating them to be on the podcast for over a year, but Internet was never good enough. So much fun. Maddie was happy to be back. :)

Toll roads are one of the biggest scams out there. Unfortunately the east coast is full of them. We have mapped out toll-free routes over the years out of principle. Many times the toll-free routes are just as fast, or marginally slower. The only time we take a toll road is when we know it will save us significant time, which is actually pretty rare. Besides the tolls, you get a double-whammy with paying higher gas and food prices at the toll plazas, not to mention limited selection. Sometimes prices are significantly higher, like $3 sodas in vending machines. It's like they think you're stuck in an amusement park.

Those of us that live on the east coast just get used to these tolls, but it's painful watching someone like you feel like you are getting fleeced. Only tip I can give you is to pick up an EzPass. It's accepted almost everywhere up and down the east coast. While you still pay the tool, it makes it so much easier. At least until you get the credit card bill!
@KeepYourDaydream8 жыл бұрын
I can't believe I didn't think to get a EzPass?!? We could have used them starting in IL. I guess I thought they were for Locals, but it would have saved us a lot of time and frustration. Fees showing up on a statement don't seem as much! Goes into the overall budget, but sucking the cash out of my wallet was maddening! Thanks for the idea.
@RedcarWW2 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the north east and our living nightmare. I would also say that the toll dollars do not go directly into the roads. Traveling from where we live in RI to just DC, you hit so many tolls. To go non-toll road is impossible or way out of the way.
