Scottish/Breton drum corps tend to focus more on the musical than the visual. The truth is, many of the snare drummers learned by mirroring what their instructors were doing from a young age. They found it easier to hold the stick on the same side (as if looking in a mirror) as their instructor to make learning easier. Hence, the reverse traditional grip. There are no rules in pipe bands against how one holds their sticks. Heck, you might even find someone playing matched grip if you look hard enough : ) Thanks for your comment, and hope that clears things up for you!
