So, I'm kinda torn on hearing all of this. My own disclosure, I was never a pot smoker, I couldn't stand the smell, but in addition to that I have asthma. I injured my back going on 13 years ago. I've done a lot of things to try and dull the pain just so I can function, which ended up with me hooked on pain pills and drinking. This ultimately led to depression, which led to anti-depressents which led to a myriad of other issues. Fast forward to 3 years ago. I finally decided that something needed to change. I went to my doctor and he mentioned medical marijuana. I was pretty desperate at that point, and I had heard about edibles so I wouldn't have to deal with the smoke or smell. I am happy to say that I've been alchohol free for 3 years, I am off pain pills, and off anti-depressants. I have been using medical marijuana for 3 years and have physically felt better, I started doing yoga, I go outside and hike more instead of staying inside playing video games, etc. I feel like I owe a lot to THC because I honestly don't know if my wife and I would still be married had I not changed and stopped the drinking and pills. All of that said, it is still addictive and I know that. I feel physically and mentally bad if I don't have it for a couple of days - so the old wives tale of it being nonhabit forming are untrue. IMO it should be treated as any other medication, use as directed and don't abuse it. I didn't know Smith had gotten to the point where he was essentially high 24/7, always with a joint in hand. I only take mine after work, and after I've done whatever I need to do around the house, because I'm not under any delusion that I'm just as functional when I'm not on it, because I'm definitely not. IDK, I feel like it has it's benefits, it's certainly helped me; but it should be used in moderation, like any other addictive substance or activity. It seemed to have really taken a toll on him and his relationships, so I'm glad he's making the change that he feels like he needs to make.

It’s really amazing that you were able to pull yourself out of the kind of spiral you went through and though I think keeping in mind the importance of not over relying on a substance that helps alleviate what you’re dealing with I also think it’s pretty unfair to draw too much of a comparison between you and Kevin smith’s marijuana usage Using a drug to help allow yourself too stop abusing other substances and cope with a physical injury in the attempt to live (what sounds like) a more normal and healthy life is vastly different than using a drug constantly and copiously to actively avoid addressing issues

I grew up on Kevin Smith movies. My friend showed me Clerks when I was 12, and I vibed with it immediately. I saw everything he pumped out by the mid 2000's. I watched the "Evening With..." series, I read his books, I read his comic books. There are lines from his movies I still quote to this day. Dogma is still one of my favorite movies. I even listened to his podcasts far longer than I should have, because he made them. I was as big a fan of the man as anyone. Stoner Kevin just ground down my fandom to a nub. Kev in the part 3 of this crossover is THE best evidence on record of the addictive potential of cannabis. I partake, at times quite heavily. I'm not gonna act like it's meth or heroin, but there is a very understated and underpublicized potential for psychological addiction. I'm all for legalization, but stoners need to be honest with themselves and everyone else that it isn't a panacea, and that there are downsides. Kevin Smith's whole career post Zack and Miri is evidence of the damage that it can do to creativity when indulged in too frequently. I've heard it said (by Kevin, iirc) that you should "write stoned, and edit sober." The sober part of that equation is the most important part. Additionally, weed has a way of making your problems and anxieties "go away". I understand wanting a break from your problems and that anxiety can be crippling and that weed can be helpful with that. But. Masking those problems and anxieties behind a haze of weed smoke 24/7 is only going to make them worse. You have to deal with/confront those problems some time. I'm glad he has finally taken some steps back from it. It seems like he's been going through a lot behind the scenes and I hope he finds some peace. I'll forever be grateful to him for introducing me to Tell 'Em Steve Dave.

I used marijuana to quit drinking almost a year ago. I was a bad alcoholic, on a good night I’d drink a 6 pack and go to bed, most nights it was hard liquor. Rehab didn’t work, sober living didn’t, I wasn’t able to stop through those statistically ineffective treatments. I started smoking weed though, and it has led to dramatic improvements in my life. I’m aware that it’s a crutch and I need to get off, but as a fellow addict I totally understand Smith romanticizing weed the way he does. I always attribute my successes to weed, it’s what got me to stop drinking and I’m significantly happier and healthier. I’ve lost 50lbs and am at my first healthy BMI since high school, crazy how easy it is to shed weight when you don’t drink. I’m glad he was able to give it up, hope I can cross that bridge one day, I’m not ready to give it up yet

What a great piece! I am not terribly happy about the amount of memories about Kev this brought back. He seemed fun and nice when he was making the early movies, and then the live speaking dates happened. And they were fine, kinda neat. And then "Jay and Silent Bob get Old" came around and it seemed like every episode was about him spitefully dunking on Jay Mewes for cheap laffs in front of a crowd and I got creeped out. Then came Constant Reboot/Crying Kevin and I was glad I had ignored him fer all those years.

As someone who partakes in Mary Jane sometimes, weed can absolutely be addictive. In reality, anything we do daily to get joy is addictive, and not all addictions are equal. I know people who allow pot to control every moment of their day. Their day is scheduled and tailored to their marijuana use. Than you got guys in the mid 30s like me, who use it every once in a while to relax, or enjoy the evening. I have a cousin who'd rather sleep his days away if he doesn't have weed. But it's my replacement when we have friends over to drink and watch the game, because I hate alcohol. But I have seen it, the mental addiction is real and people think because its a plant that its okay. I am not naive enough to act like marijuana doesn't have its positive attributes, but its also like most other substances, its mostly dependent on the user. If you have an addictive personality, weed can quickly consume your life. But I don't judge people who like to have a smoke or edible here and there. We all have our vices and ways to wind down. Just the same as I don't judge people who like to go out every once in a while to have some drinks. But that doesn't erase alcoholism being a massive issue. Moderation and intent of the use is deeply important. Just like overeating, drinking too much, hell even exercising too much can be detrimental. It's far less about the substance than the person actually using the substance. I think we went from being unfair and dishonest about marijuana in a negative way so long in this country, only to overcorrect and now people truly believe there is no negative side effects of use. As with most things, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Thx for the update on Kevin Smith. I wish him well. I first saw Clerks at Woodstock’94. The first night (Fri), The Violent Femmes played a surprise set on the main stage, as the last band of the day. Immediately after it, they had a screening of Clerks. We watched about 20 min of it before heading back to our campsite. A year or so later, I rented it from Blockbuster, unaware that I had already seen the first 20 min. Took me a few minutes of “I swear I’ve seen this somewhere before now” confused thinking before I figured it out. Been a fan of his work since then. Weed addiction is very much a real thing. I have dealt with it myself in the past, it's not certainly not a simple problem to overcome but defiantly can be done, and once you get past the initial rough patch it's easier then you might think to live without it being a regular fixture in your life.... If you are gonna use drugs like pot/alcohol don't learn to just, "handle your high." Learn to regulate your usage and if you can't do that learn to live without it. 10:17 - If you can't regulate this is what becomes of you, you get to the point where you are to trying to explain to a group of your friends how your addiction is actually a benefit not just to yourself but everyone around you. It's one thing to justify that behavior to yourself, but truly sick to tell others that without me being constantly high, "maybe we wouldn't be friends anymore" or "maybe you wouldn't have a job." All this while they calmly question and explain to you that it's not the case, and you still refuse to see it any other way. Just sick and delusional! All that being said, good luck to Kevin Smith in his quitting journey. It's never easy to admit when we are wrong especially when doubling down on it for over a decade lol. Better late than never, all the best to him.

She uses weed to calm her nerves. I’m worried that she will use it EVERY time she gets nerves. Sometimes you HAVE to be present for it. I understand why people smoke or drink to deal with a hardship…but I almost feel like it’s counter productive. Sure, it helps at that moment in time, but it doesn’t fix the problem. The high will end, but that problem is still there. If I’m worried, I need to be aware and present. It’s the only way to come up with a solution.

It makes total sense that he started to use weed constantly, following his heart attack. Kevin had a food addiction (dopamine addiction), and after his heart attack he totally flipped his diet, and started following a vegatarian life style. He spoke about how he followed Penn's advice, because he did this potato diet to lose a lot of weight. The point is, the food was his addiction (dopamine again) and then he just moved to a new addiction. We are all addicted to dopamine, it just depends on where you get your hits from. I recommend people looking into our dopamine addiction in the US especially. It's also what causes people to spend more time on social media, posting to get likes and comments, rather than having real relationships with close friends and family.

Pot isn't physically addictive, and there isn't a chance of overdosing from it. It's just a plant, and it helps a lot of people with their anxiety and stomach issues. The trick with weed is that you don't let it become your hobby and/or your entire identity. You should smoke so that you're able to do things that you wouldn't normally be able to do due to anxiety issues. You shouldn't just smoke as your hobby and not have anything else in your life. Weed should help you to be able to walk through doors in life that you nor.ally wouldn't walk through and do things that you wouldn't normally do because of your anxiety. Also, you don't want to become one of these people who makes smoking weed their ENTIRE identity. I've seen so many people make weed their entire identity, and that's taking it way too far. You don't want to be one of those people who constantly talk about weed all day, every day and not talk about anything else! I still think that weed is the better choice for anxiety than a pill like Xanax. Xanax withdrawal can kill you, and I think it's a whole hell of a lot healthier for you to build up a tolerance to weed than Xanax. The same thing goes with pain pills. If you can smoke a joint instead of taking opiates for physical pain, then you're definitely going to be better off than if you start taking pills to manage your pain. Those opiates and Xanax pills will destroy your health and your life a hell of a lot faster than weed ever could.

@@jamesteegardner2273 Any kind of abuse: food, substance, gambling, etc… usually results from something else. Sometimes it’s a physical dependency, often it’s OCD, and other times it’s anxiety. Cannabis is one of the tamest, it’s not going to kill you or destroy your livelihood like unhealthy food addictions, alcoholism, gambling, and pharmaceuticals. I do agree, though, that it can be used as a bandage to cover up things that therapy can deal with. Although, if you’re a creative editor, a musician, it can also be used as a tool because your brain processes sound and words differently-you can better understand the layers and build from there. Unfortunately, when writing, unless you have an idea of what you’re doing, a blank page remains a blank page.

I indulge from time to time. I noticed that it lowers that little voice in your mind that tells you what you're working on creatively isn't worth doing. I can see someone taking that as a pathway to success and the fact that he's rich and getting gigs still reinforces it. But when I write high I need to re-visit it sober and clear it up because it does become a stream of conscious at the time.

@@renardfox328 I have been drinking infused weed drinks (10 mg per can) once a day to get off smoking weed. Been doing this since beginning of April and it's worked great. @@renardfox328 Yeah not sure what the laws are or if you have pot stores in your area, but if you do, look into the infused drinks. The edibles here are also 10 mg and they don't do crap, but for some reason the 10mg drinks do it for me. I reccomend the sparkling water drinks as they have less sugar, but the pop drinks are fine also if you don't mind some sugar. The illegal edibles/drinks have too much THC in them for me, so that's why I find the legal 10mg weed infused beverages are a sweet spot. Especially if you are not a heavy smoker. Anything you do for 21 days straight will become a habit, whether that's smoking weed or not drinking at all, so whatever you do (or don't do), do it (or don't do it) for 21 days in a row and your habits will change. I have kinda noticed there is a spectrum between weed and alcohol. Weed is good for controlling impulsivity where alcohol is good for social anxiety. But they go hand in hand. In a way, not caring what others think is the same as being inconsiderate. I don’t drink for example because i am already pretty uninhibited, but smoking helps me be a lil less impulsive and a lil more considerate. Aspects of my adhd that adderall doesn’t work too well for. But I always ask people questions about anxiety and stuff b4 i share weed. Drugs is something i think its ok to gatekeep. Imo if i gave someone weed and it gives them a panic attack, i need to hold myself responsible imo.

The idea that you can't get addicted to weed is stupid. You can get addicted to food. You can get addicted to sex. I know a woman who is addicted to running. That doesn't mean it can't eventually become an obstacle to healthy relationships.
