Adam’s technique on this song is something that’s become a bit of a hallmark of the modern Tool sound. He’s not palm muting in the intro but playing straight 16th notes with his picking hand (DUDUDU) and doing a pull off with his left in between the first two strokes to create the articulation of the triplet. Stunningly precise especially live.

I never heard anything from that album before hand, but I bought it that day, too, purely based on Tool's reputation. But I did not have instant love. I remember as it was yesterday, hearing that album and being utterly disappointed and saying to myself I never need to listen to this album again. Can you believe it?? How wrong I was. 500-700 listens later it is probably the best example of a sleeper album for me, one that just kept getting better even after listening to it nearly everyday for the first year after it came out. And even after all that time I still hadn't settled on my favorite song, but by now I rank the Wings for Marie pair as my favorite work of art in any genre or media.

Danny Carey has an intuitive sense of percussion that I've never heard from another prog rock drummer. Guys like Neil Piert, Mike Portnoy, and Thomas Haake are incredibly technical in their playing, but Danny is super technical while having a sense of rhythm, groove, and sound that someone like John Bonham had. For that reason he is the single best percussionist/drummer that I've ever heard.

"Shine on upon the severed / Shine until the two become one / Divided I'm withering away / Divided I'm withering away / Shine on upon the many, light our way / Benevolent sun". I feel this verses sum up pretty well what Tool music has meant for me during all these years. Since I was a child, I've felt broken, severed, dysfunctional, incomplete. My family has a long history of mental health issues who weren't properly dealt with, I've been enduring some trauma related to my upbringing and I'm still struggling to this day to find a place where I feel safe and valued. Tool music helped me to survive, to watch inside my darkness and accept that some wounds will never heal completely but I still deserve to be happy. I'm still here, keep up this amazing work! 🖤PS. Sorry for my English, it's not my first language.

I feel that being broken isn’t something to be ashamed of. We are all in some way, and as long as we recognize it and deal with it, we can be alive and still thrive. I know that everyday is a struggle for me. I have some mental illness, but I have chosen to be medicated because that’s what feels best for me and my long term health, but even the meds have their own side effects and those aren’t great either. Tool has definitely been a go to outlet for many years and helped recognize that I am not alone and that we can all work through anything if we have the desire to.

About Danny one should know: all the Tool tracks are built on his drumming, which probably explains why he always sounds so good on them. Danny lays out the track, Adam and Justin come in after him, Maynard gets the raw tracks and writes the lyrics for them...

I think this song is an example of Adam being inspired by Meshuggah. I know he said it about 10,000 Days. He talked about seeing them play and their technique with guitars. He learned stuff from Meshuggah. I just can't remember the quote but I'm sure it was in an interview. And Meshuggah did open for Tool during the Lateralus tour. So I'm not surprised if Adam learned to play that percussive heavy sound on guitar. It's beefy as fuck. 😁

The song is in 9/8. You hit the nail right on the head. That's impressive as hell. Also, you're 100% right about Danny. He could very easily force TOOL to be a drum-centric band. But he doesn't. He does an incredible amount of work to make the drum track complex but also subtle. It doesn't tread over the other instruments, when I think he very easily could make it if he wanted to. But he respects his band-mates and allows himself to exist in a space where he can be a part of a greater whole, rather than leader with people following him.

As a guitar player the way that Adam Jones plays that main galloping riff is really cool. For a long time I thought he was just doing standard alternate picked triplets, but he's actually doing a pull-off on the first note into the open E and dragging his finger across the A and D strings to give it an extremely unique flavor. Never really seen anyone else do that.

I think the reason why I like your tool reaction videos the best (compared to other reaction channels) is because of the fact that you dont focus on lyrics on a first listen like everyone else. Sometimes tools lyrics can be simple and easy to understand, but most of the time it takes many many listens before you can peel all the layers of the onion away. The fact that you dont even take the skin off that onion and you just focus on the production and music writing and things you can understand makes the reaction much more enjoyable.
