Lyrics:
It was 1989, my thoughts were short my hair was long
Caught somewhere between a boy and man
She was seventeen and she was far from in-between
It was summertime in Northern Michigan
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Splashing through the sand bar
Talking by the campfire
It's the simple things in life, like when and where
We didn't have no internet
But man, I never will forget
The way the moonlight shined upon her hair
And we were trying different things
We were smoking funny things
Making love out by the lake to our favorite song
Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking 'bout tomorrow
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long
Catching walleye from the dock
Watching the waves roll off the rocks
She'll forever hold a spot inside my soul
We'd blister in the sun
We couldn't wait for night to come
To hit that sand and play some rock and roll
While we were trying different things
We were smoking funny things
Making love out by the lake to our favorite song
Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking 'bout tomorrow
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long
Now nothing seems as strange as when the leaves began to change
Or how we thought those days would never end
Sometimes I'll hear that song and I'll start to sing along
And think man I'd love to see that girl again
And we were trying different things
We were smoking funny things
Making love out by the lake to our favorite song
Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking 'bout tomorrow
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long
And we were trying different things
We were smoking funny things
Making love out by the lake to our favorite song
Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking 'bout tomorrow
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long
Singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all summer long

This is one of my favorite songs. I grew up in Alabama. I did 26 years in the Army most of my time was in Airborne and special ops. I heard this song on Arm Forces Radio in Afghanistan. I taught our interpreter to sing This song and then Sweet home Alabama. I was very fortunate to get him and his family out. They live about ten miles

I’m here bc my 78 yr old mom asked me to add it to her playlist 😆 My best friend passed away this summer and she loved Kid Rock..so I’m putting a tribute video together for her to Only God Knows Why. I think everyone has a Kid Rock song they love! The Rebel Without a Cause album was massive when I was younger..it’s one of my feel good go-to’s 😎

@@terriunderwoodmeredith2452 It's bad, that he died and seemingly much too young. But the good thing is you miss him, cause this means you've had a good time with him. I wish you all the best for your further live. And though I'm a random person in the KZbin comment section to you (as you are to me) I mean this from the bottom of my heart, cause your comment anyhow made me cry. I really feel sorry for you without knowing you. But I guess it is, because this great song connects us.

I've loved Kid Rock since I was a kid. My mom was from Michigan, & I was born & raised in Tennessee so everyone around me listened to his music. This song came out when my brother & I were kids, we created a "stage" outside in the yard, set up lawn chairs, & made the family (including our grandparents & great grandmother) come listen to us preform it 😂 theres probably a video of that somewhere.. My brother passed away 2 years ago, its crazy how a song can take you back to a place & time just like it was yesterday.. ❤️

Let me just say this, because it does not look like anyone else has yet- LYNYRD SKYNYRD. I was a teenager in high school when the "Sweet Home Alabama" first hit the radio airwaves. I can't even begin to tell you how much fun I had or can I begin to describe what the world was like back then. Just to say it was different is the biggest understatement of all time. Even the funny things we were smoking was different. lol So even if Kid Rock did not really write this music, I still love this song. I used to think that the music from my generation would be forgotten in time, but thank god I was wrong. It was just too good to be forgotten!

Man, I got a ton of stories. Living in Nashville we got Alot of lakes & my youth was just unbelievable. I used to drive my bass boat up & down the lake shore he's driving in this video. Fish it, have picnics right there where those 2 twins are with the rebel flag bikini. That's Hendersonville TN. My cousin is a country song writer, lives right down the street from that video shoot. This video kicks my memory into overdrive. Such good times. We can't go back but we have the God given memories.

@JeffreyHill-zv5xd I lived in Nashville in the 80s. My best friend played steel guitar for Porter Wagoner in his all girl band that he had at the time. I got to travel with them sometimes. I met alot of the old country stars. Mel Tillis was always a good time. I remember going to a Bass fishing tournament and at the weigh in Mel put little pebbles in the gills to make them weigh more. I worked at the Opryland Hotel as a cocktail waitress and met so many good musicians. I really miss those good ol days. I'm 65 now and I can still party with the best.😊

I lived my teenage years on the lake and roller rinks for living. It was a blast. Kids now a days have no idea what it's like to be out having good time without shooting someone girlfriends, fun, good friends. Couldn't ask for more

OMG! So did I!! Roller rink always, lake always!! I miss those days!! So wish we could go back. It was definitely the best time of my life. My kids and kids in their generation have absolutely no idea what fun they're missing. All my kids are into games, but my youngest (he'll be 22 in September) has no idea how to live without everything today's technology brings. It's just really sad. The ONLY one who sort of appreciates our time growing up would be my oldest (daughter who will be 30 in September). But even still, she's lacking in what we really did.

This song has described almost every teenage experience before the invention of cell phones & internet. A time when no one was trying to "go viral" and all of our crazy dumb shit we did was not recorded for the world to see lol thankfully for some of us, those days are locked up tight and only seen in the memories of only those who were there! I miss the simpler time before everything got all hectic with becoming an adult and the biggest thoughts were when and where?

Ladies, if you're wondering, you will live forever in the mind of your 17 year-old boyfriend. He'll love his wife, children, and grandchildren, but not a day will pass that he doesn't reminisce about you and that time. A, O, C, and J, I'll go to my grave without a moment's regret about my youth.

Anyone else feel like this song is a window to the past where life was simpler, and full of memories yet experienced? Every time I hear this song it causes my mind to go into memory overload, which surprises me that I remember anything from back then. So much brain experimenting and yet I sit here all nostalgic with a smile ear to ear.
