I had the Boox Page device. Battery life on these android devices are definitely not as good as a Kindle, but that’s expected. Mine could last 2-3 weeks on a charge. You can change the auto shutdown to never happen I think but I set mine to 2 days. Boox devices definitely have a learning curve. It’s not quite as simple as a Kindle or Kobo but the freedom of choice that it offers will be worth the trade off for some. Not a fan of not owning my books which is why I don’t buy from Amazon. I did return my Boox though because the front light was very blue and warm light colors were more of a yellowish green instead of amber/orange like my Kindle. It also wasn’t super comfortable despite having page turn buttons. A very boxy/flat design and was too thin. I’m glad you pointed out the outdated Android version. It’s an important problem Boox needs to address. Even their Android 12 devices will soon be unsupported. I also don’t recommend buying from their official website as their return policy is quite bad. If you decide you don’t want it you have to pay for shipping back to China, and will only get a partial refund.

Can' you not set the Go 6 to not power off automatically (after a set time) like you can with other Boox devices? E-ink doesn't use power when the light is off and the screen is static, so it shouldn't be an issue of battery life.
@_stevenfoster2 ай бұрын
You can, but because the whole android OS is running it drains the battery quicker than whatever lightweight OS Amazon has on their Kindles.

@ Hardly any at all. Android has great standby with hardly any battery drain. My Boox devices last weeks and I never turn them off.

Just a computer literacy problem. Kindle is good if you've only ever owned an iPhone. Boox wins if you know how to do anything on your own.
@deadleaves36932 ай бұрын
I don't have the Go 6 - but I have the Page I would suspect you can set the power off/shutdown to "never" just like the Page. The power button takes the device to sleep and then when you hit it again back to where you left off in a second. The battery drain is more than a kindle, but you should still get weeks before needing a charge unless you're blasting the front light and doing tablet stuff for multiple hours each day.

For people in the west who are using Amazon, Kindle is the way to go for most of the time. For those who don't use Amazon and Kindle, it is a no-brainer to opt for Android (which Boox is one option).

Great review, thank you. This is the first direct comparison I’ve seen. I’ve had a Kindle for over a decade, but recently read all the buzz about Boox. There are other reading apps I use (like Everand or Instapaper) that would awesome on an ereader so I asked for a Boox for Christmas. I’m a bit disappointed to see how slow the Boox is. Boot up time is long like you said, and also navigating other apps is pretty laggy. The website also said it could do dark mode but that seems to limited to the dark mode in apps, not in the system settings. The point about Android 11 going out of date is a great point too. So now I’m torn: get access to other reading apps on an ereader but it’s slow and I need to learn a new OS, or get snappy, familiar Kindle but only Kindle 🤔

You can use free software, Calibre, to manage your library and transfer by usb or wireless (on Mac or Windows, linux) to the Boox device (or Kindle many other devices).

@_stevenfoster28 күн бұрын
You can still side load books. Amazon just upgrade the kindles to support MTP so if you’re on a Mac you’ll need something like android file transfer to side load.

I've been interested in the Go 6 so this is exactly the comparison I was looking for, thanks. My older Kindle Basic has a case and wakes up when you open the cover. You can also manually download the latest software update that comes on the new models and it made mine much more responsive.

Kindle: buy books you don't own and be restricted into a sandbox that you don't control. Boox: it's an android device, get the mileage you can out of your computer literacy.

@JAH1139 unless you own the file, can store it on your own computer or phone, and read it on any application that supports the file format, I'd call that renting and not ownership.

I have the Kindle Oasis without adds, but I still get those annoying Amazon recommendations which I always ignore. I have the Boox Tab X which I find ideal for reading pdf scans of old magazines on it. It does have some problems, but I think they can be solved by future updates. Personally... If I were to buy a smaller ereader again, I would look for other alternatives than the Kindle. Pure for the fact that an android device has the option to put other apps on it as well.

Why does Amazon persist in coming out with these black Kindles? They're total fingerprint magnets. That's why I bought a white 10th Gen, I absolutely _love_ it, but it's developed (in spite of being in a case, a small crack on one of the side bezels, so I'd like to "upgrade," but there are no white options anymore! 😤😉 So, I'm tempted by the Matcha option, which hopefully won't show fingerprints, at least, as much!

I have the black 2024, and it's totally fine. I think that your problem was with the device's texture, and I can assure you they totally solved it.
@BrianHartmanАй бұрын
The one thing that I noticed immediately is that your Boox appears to be a fingerprint magnet. :) I'm wondering if you would be able to root the device and get a later version of Android on it that way. I'm kind of surprised the Boox device shuts all the way down. An e-ink device shouldn't have to do that. I suppose it might be running all kinds of things in the background that the Kindle doesn't have to run, though. Is the Boox pen-enabled? You didn't talk about that. You wouldn't want to write long things on it, but I could see it being useful for lists and such. If your only interest is reading, I could see how the Kindle would be tempting. For my own part, I think I'd want the Boox, only because it's so much more versatile. With Android on it, you could probably hook it up to a Bluetooth keyboard and write with it if you wanted to. You're trading a lot of battery life for that versatility, but I think that's a fair trade.

Liked your video, Greetings from Spain

I’m working on my review of the Boox Go 6 still but what I would say so far is that the screen is similar to the kindle. High dpi and fast refreshes. I will try the web browser again but it seems like they made the built in RSS reader for the best on device news experience. It’s ok from my use so far. Dictionaries aren’t preinstalled in the built in reader app but can be installed.
