Wedwood descriped it in its Book "The Thrity Years War" when rumor spread that their king was dead the Swedes were fourious attacked at the right flank and won the victory, the first sign that the King was dead was when some swedish officiers saw his wounded Horse without a Rider calloping over the battlefield. Even more sad is that the actual words he spoke were "Ich bin der König von Schweden...gewesen." (Roughly, "I am the King of Sweden...no more.") "Bin" is the German word for "am", but "bin [...] gewesen" is a way of saying "was". So he said "I am the King of Sweden", paused, realized he was about to die, and added "gewesen", making it past tense.

The 30 years war was comparable to WW2 in terms of raw carnage and death inflicted on the people. Entire cities, towns, and villages were erased from the map. A some point the war devolved into an all out slaughter fest of "kill everyone." Germany would not recover for 200 years.

@@charleswinters9567 You just have me such a history boner, I just imagined Richelieu standing at the port looking at the fleet, if you don't know the painting, look it up, you will have a great time. These battles with a good engine, a good AI on modern consoles... I mean, even before that conflict, you have the eighty years war between the Netherlands and Spain, so much good stuff to explore... But to be honest, I want them to get back on track before they move on to do all of that. And if they loose this market, someone else will hopefully step up their game and deliver us from games like Three Kingdoms and Troy who while certainly not bad, were far from the quality I had hoped the series would have by now and arguably some of the weakest titles in the series. Like, even thrones had animations. Remember those? Man, I just want another good historical total war... I have nothing against warhammer but you can still mod the historical titles to make good famtasy but they are just a much better foundation most of the time and the feeling of seeing history play out is unrivaled.

Actually if you think about it it is insane how many enemies the imperial army and the catholic league had to deal with one after another. Just imagine how euphoric you would be as a hardened soldier to hear that the Swedish king has died just to get informed that now the French are coming, after you already battled the Bohemians, the Danish, the Swedish and the German Protestants for the last 14 years. And the French are catholic even. I would feel betrayed.

I think it has a lot to do with older English speaking sources being largely biased (very anti-catholic) and thus making him appear to be unfallable. Frankly even many of 'his' innovations were borrowed from the French Huguenots (cavalry) and Dutch (infantry).

I think usually you would capture him for ransom, the soldiers either must have had a personal grudge against the dude or they realized that his death was more useful to his cause then the ransom / the risk of him being freed.

@@franzferdinand2389 The Catholic army was not doing well at that point, and the protestants still had 2 commanders in the field. He could have been captured, but I think the currassier thought it would be impossible to keep him, as every man possible was needed to fight off the swedes, not guard the king. Gustavus was too much of a threat to be kept alive, and if captured, would have been freed, and motivated the troops to fight even harder, to rescue their king.

I took a course on the battle of Lützen and if I may, I'll add some things to the video: We are not really sure how Gustavus Adolphus died, some versions (like the first french report of the battle) argue that Gustavus was indeed shot a first time by an imperial soldier (suspected at the time to be Pappenheim himself) and another by an imperial soldier while he was trying to get out of the melee. Nowadays, we still are pretty unsure, as it could also have been a random swedish soldier who shot the king in the middle of the gunpowder smoke. Concerning the retreat of Wallenstein, he did receive some reinforcements (around 5000 men) near the end of the battle, wich could have allowed him to rout the swedish army. However, he convinced himself that a 15 000 strong army under the command of the elector of Saxony was coming to reinforce the swedes and allies and turn the tide of the battle. Do note that he was also himself nearly killed or captured during the very long battle, so it's pretty easy to understand how this idea went to his head.

Well yeah, because we aren't actually sure how Gustavus Adolphus died. I would rather submit a number of hypothesis rather than say, "yeah that's exactly how he died". One of the first reports on Gustavus Adolphus death was that he was shot by Pappenheim himself. Like, working on the sources is the first thing you do when studying to become a historian. I added some precisions to the vid.

Speaking of the intensity of the battle: Even the supposedly callous and heartless Wallenstein was greatly shook by this battle, von Harrach, his nephew (in-law) and one his commanders was shot through the lower side of his neck and jaw and the bullet passed right through the back of his jaw, his neck, and came right out of the back of his neck. He was in such a bad state that after Wallenstein rushed to him and checked his state that Wallenstein told him to just quit the battle with honor right in the thick of it.

The Thirty Years War represents the largest non-combative casualties of any modern age conflict, mostly due to widespread disease and large scale populational dislocations on both sides. It is regrettable that Gustavus Adolphus perished in 1632. Great suggestion. Always thought the same, but never bothered commenting on it. Another thing is that, although they added the "north arrow", I would prefer the battle maps to always be oriented northwards.

I honestly never learned much about the Thirty Years' War. I had also never heard the term, "Magdeburg's Quarter," but I gathered from tone and brief context that it wasn't good. A simple wikipedia search of it reveals the tragic truth. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Lutzen was a costly battle for the Swedes, including Gustavus Adolphus. Although they won the field, the Swedish cause wavered after the king was dead and the continuation of Swedish involvement appeared in doubt.

@@DidierDidier-kc4nm No, WW2 alone caused more deaths in Germany than the 30 Years War, but it was the biggest reason for future attempts to create a unified country to properly oppose all other nation states around the empire, so you could say that because of this war we get the second empire in the 1870s, which unified most of the german-speaking areas of Europe.

There were no German unification attempts before the time of Napoleon. You could say the Thirty Years War was the biggest catastrophe in German history before Hitler.

Despite perhaps few misleading generalisations or speed-ups in the narrative, this video is a masterpiece. We have to keep in mind, that speaking of 30 years war, the sources, contemporary and later and battlefield archeological, tend to differ from each other a lot, and this is a very concise video in that sense, wonderful achievement. And when it comes to miselading generalisations/ borderline historical errors in this video, I am talking now about very minor details, like Tilly was not killed by a cannon ball, but a musket ball that likely discharged from a hailshot etc. So, anyways, this is a masterpiece, even if one is super anal. And you even mentioned the finnish troops crossing the Lech river, which is an important definition to me.

Ooh I played this battle in the "pike and shot" game, I massed my infantry in the centre, some cavalry and skirmishers on my right to protect the flank, and mass cavalry on the left flank. Overwhelmed their right flank, held off their left flank and broke through their centre.
