Kirk, For a Crown Platinum with 340 hp that weighs more than a Ford Crown Victoria, your mpg result is outstanding.🥳🥳 My biggest concern with the Crown Sedan is the fact the comfortable and elevated seat height is negated by the lack of rear seat headroom. That is a problem that plagues 99% of sedans in production today. 🤨

@@jamesphillips4599 That is a fair point. At this time I am still amazed Toyota brought the Crown wagon to our market. If the Signia sells at or above the numbers Toyota projected, they may consider adding a second powertrain option.

Hi Kirk, I recently bought a 2025 Camry and sometimes when the HV battery is low the engine revs up more than usual to charge it. Like when applying throttle and what not it revs higher, it kind of feels like a clutch slipping to describe the feel. It revs a lot higher than any car I have owned when its in idle and trying to charge the battery. Have you felt the same in some cases when driving that car? Thanks

Very interesting, I’m an owner of a Crown Limited and I get a cool 45-44 mpg, slightly more than its advertised. However, I have 100% went over that and hit a whopping 57mpg but that took a lot of conscious planning The crown is 100% the best option for comfort, style, and size. You can easily get 50mpg and the AWD system gets you DOWN when you need it. My biggest gripe about it is that the head clearance is HORRENDOUS, if you’re 6 foot you might have an issue especially if you use the sun visor

Kirk, you made one small mistake on the powertrain. saying the rear E-axle can't be disconnected and that it always requires a power draw isn't true. Just because the motor is connected does not mean the current has to be flowing... If Toyota always uses the rear motor that is by choice. Not a requirement based on build layout... That's not how electric motors work.

To be fair the gen 2 prius drops bars sometimes at random if you do the math, IE 140km then 89km, 125km, 65km, etc etc. It's kind of a guesstimate. Best way to calculate fuel economy is by gong to the last 5l (or ~1.5us gal). If you want to keep it safe then just let it dry up to about 15l (~4 us gal, should be a very safe spot without occasional aeration).

2023 S60 Recharge, 11/1/22 to 10/31/24, about 70% local miles, 20562 miles, 192.9 gal, 106.6 mpg, ~$30 / mo to charge at 16¢ per kWh. Love the technical content on this site. Here’s my contribution, 30 days in my Volvo PHEV sedan: 956 miles, 26 driving days, 6 days were more than 50 miles (105+110+73+53+167+183), totaling 691 miles, but not all hwy miles. Given my average full battery charge of 50 - not 41 - miles, one could conclude that about 390 of these miles were gasoline powered, but I’d guess the number is lower. Except for (Pa) wintertime, and if exhausting the battery completely, the car will go up to 10% farther on electric than predicted on the dash, 40 to 55 mph. Obviously, 20 of the 26 were under 50 miles. Little if any gas burned these 20 days as this motor is more than adequate for local driving. It will instantly deliver 445 lbs ft* to the rear wheels when needed. *Dyno test.

oh I’m ~94mpg overall since spring. I just mean with the battery depleted, with the car driving like a traditional hybrid, the Volvos simply aren’t much more efficient than a comparable ICE car. @@Cal94 my 106 includes two Pa winters, and of course the sedan is more efficient than an SUV (12 to 15% for mine vs yours, EPA). If you complain about poor mileage in a PHEV it would be best to also point out, it’s a given when you don’t plug it in. It really does defeat the purpose.
@Cal94

@@billurban1581 nonsense. it is absolutely valid to criticize volvo only getting 31mpg out of S60/V60, when ford and toyota can squeeze better economy out of a bigger NA engine in a bigger car (38mpg for RAV4 prime, 40mpg in the escape PHEV). asians tend to engineer PHEVs for efficiency, whereas the europeans engineer PHEVs for horsepower, to replace bigger gas engines. we're allowed to be annoyed by that philosophical difference. We're allowed to say, "hey volvo, how about you give us a PHEV with the D4 or B4 engines, which return 40mpg easily over in europe?" And part of maintaining a PHEV, is putting heat cycles into the gas engine periodically. engines don't like to sit, and gas has a shelf life. fuel economy should still matter to us. and when using a wagon like a wagon, hauling bikes and kayaks far into the sticks, it sucks that we burn premium.
