Hi Jeff I would like to take one kite on holiday like a 14m switchblade which will be good for light wind but when the wind picks up will I be able to use this kite in strong winds with shorter bar lines like 18m lines? Please tell me what you think as i would like to cut down on the amount of gear going on holiday.

Great question, as a general rule, the shorter lines you use, the faster the kite will go but the shorter lines will reduce the kites power. So yes, shorter lines would help to widen the wind range of your kite.

but does the 1-2kt diff make a difference? 6kt is not surfing, it is sailing. It can also be very dangerous, because when wind dies, you're fucked up in the middle of nowhere. With LEI you can use it for rescue as a body support in water, swim back or wait long for rescue - with foil, after couple of minutes (even closed-cells) you have no chance to save the kite and have to ditch it - having nothing to help you survive. So, maybe foils low-end is bit lower, but it is not really useable...

Just had my 8 year old son out on a twintip and a Flysurfer Sonic FR 9m in 6-8 knots building up some really decent speeds and going upwind. For light winds and kids under 40kg, foils work probably better.

was this on snow? Do you think a 8 M kite is good enough for 9-12 knots @ 61 Kg ?

You should move to houston and practice some of that...

I don't agree that all kite styles are equal for light wind. No inflatable kite can fly in 5-6 knots due to its weight. A foil on then other hand can! Fly surfers are expensive. Its the price you have to pay to get down a couple knots lower. Matched with the right board nothing on the market comes even close.
