Lets quickly address safety. I don't recommend anyone turning charcoal. You need a respirator (which I had), and some way to contain the dust! I had both a dust collector and a full overhead shop air filter running. I filmed in short spurts, and this took me almost a full afternoon to turn as I keep the sessions to a few minutes at a time. Be safe, Don't try this at all.

I thought the charcoal looked cool. Then I saw the lathe shaking and shaking and I thought it was going to blow up in your face. Then at the 12 minute mark I could see THROUGH the bowl as you were sanding it. Awesome. And then you turned on the black light. I salute you, Mister Brown! I think you were as surprised as we were. You'd have to be careful and make sure there's some way for heat to escape from the top, if resin heats up too much it'll become malleable and loose its shape

It is indeed a beautiful bowl, it makes me wish I had my lathe actually set up (and also a stabilizing resin system). I love the depth that you can see in the charcoal and the crystal clear resin that surrounds it. And then you turned on the blacklight and my jaw dropped. Between the two modes to viewing it you have a work of art. I wonder if the blue hues and highlights could be a result of the stabilizing resin displacing some of the tars and oils that remain in charcoal. You should ask Cody's Lab. He did a video about activating charcoal, and mentioned the oils and tars that are present in "raw" charcoal.

@@Lunatikhex my argument against that is, that it was once wood and therefore organic. Most organic things turn brown when they oxidize. Fire is a rapid oxidation reaction and charcoal is made with it, so I politely disagree. TL;DR: Nah, wood is brown.

i don't think CFLs or LEDs produce any UV light. Iirc, all of it gets converted to visible light by the fluorescent substance that covers the glass/diodes.

I know this video is nearing a year old. But that is a great surprising end result for making a charcoal resin bowl. I would of never thought to place it under a black light. With a little bit a effort you could make some nice little night lights. A small toddler would stare at that in the dark , and simple wonder how that happens, till they slip off to sleep. Or in an area at night to find your way around in the dark. I love it.

The blue color on the charcoal could be oil residue that didn't burn off when they burn the wood into charcoal and the stabilising resin bought it out and and put it on the surface of the charcoal

Probably more the stabilizer than the oil. They make a point to use dryer types of wood in charcoal production. However I can't physically inspect the charcoal to verify that.
