I had a wolf/dog mix when I lived in New Mexico. My son would use Roscoe as a pillow while he watched tv. He even saved my son from being taken from my yard. We loved him dearly and he was all the family’s watchdog and never aggressive.

I had a wolf dog as a kid too. She was incredibly smart and an escape artist. I bonded a lot with her and loved her a lot. Nikita was my best friend. She saved me when I was little from a car by yanking me out of the street. My dad sadly gave her to a sanctuary and it broke my heart. She had a much better life at that sanctuary in the mountains where she had many acres to run and a pack of other wolf dogs.

@@lizardchosimbastedanko5195 haha. No she would only poop on the police department’s lawn & I would never clean up after her. He was a cop back then. So we got to talking & we’re married 9 months later our daughter came 5 years later. When we brought her home from the hospital we were a bit worried about how Sage would react. We walked in the door, put down the car seat with our daughter in it. Sage ran around the corner, grabbed a squeaky toy, laid done in front of the carrier with a wagging tail & flipped the toy into the car seat. It was love at first sight.

It’s not good to keep a wild animal
@kristenkaz3080
@kristenkaz3080 7 ай бұрын
@@lathafalls7675 I felt I had no choice. She was formerly owned by a homeless kid & he could only afford salted nut rolls to feed her, at the gas station where I worked. Came there one morning to open the store & she was there, tied to a gas pump hose with baling twine. I took her home & had her fully vetted & she lived a lovely life. Where I lived in northern Minnesota, Native American kids often trapped wolves & forced them to captive breed with domesticated dogs. Thus, wolf hybrids. There’s a lot of them up there, still to this day. Releasing her into the wild when she’s 50% domesticated dog would do harm as well.

We had three fixed coyote/dog crosses adopted in our community. They were hilarious and not like a dog at all: high separation anxiety and fortunately, adopted by senior couples that could focus fully on them. They would dig up a beetle in frozen ice: they could smell and locate it, and chomp...protein.

A police officer family friend was so impressed with her, that I am proud to say I'm the Great Great Great Great+ Human Grandmother of many of her puppies, theirs & heirs bred to be K9's! That's why these canines end up in the position to need rescue to a sanctuary. Most people can't care for them and captivity isn't fair to a feral canine. Read the histories of each of them at their website, and you'll realize that being kept as "a pet" is *_unfair_* to them. Trying to keep a wolf hybrid as a pet is like forcing an Orca to live in a tiny pool. It's selfish and cruel to them. They are not pets, they need their habitat of Nature, not people, not captivity.

As someone who works with wild canids for a living and is in conservation --- This is why the wolf dog trade shouldn't be a thing. As cute as this little amazon porch pirate is, and as wonderful as it is that he is adapting to care so well. In the US it's a completely unregulated trade (aka you get wolfdogs with genetic issues), behavior of individual wolfdogs might be great (people who lucked out), but as a whole you cannot predict how much wolf behavior you are going to be seeing, especially once they hit sexual maturity at age 2-3, which can drastically shift behavior --- this is most often the age they end uo being surrendered to sanctuaries due to unmanageable behavior. Keep in mind they are much less tolerant of aversive handling than dogs --- attempting to "dominate" your wolfdog (which is already a shitty thing to do to domestic dogs) can break their trust --- they have a much smaller "trust bank" than domestic dogs. Wolves know we are not canids, and are generally shy animals. It's wonderful when they end up in the hands of people who can provide them the care they need --- but that is not the majority of people who own wolf dogs. There is a big difference in rescuing and being prepared vs. supporting the exotic pet trade. Wolf dogs are suuuuuper good at escaping, think like a husky and times it by 10. They end up hunting a lot of native wildlife, can have run ins with pets (same as any other feral dog really), and may also interbreed and negatively affect the genetics of the wild canid population. When they enter animal shelters, 90% of the time your wolfdog is going to be euthanized. Not *all* wolf dogs can be socialized --- some can based on individual temperament, but wolf dogs often bond to only a select few people and are ultra shy with the rest. Separation anxiety is much higher, as is general house destruction. They also don't often do super well alone, they need a pack of canids. You aren't going on any extended vacations with a wolfdog. Food is much more expensive (domestic dogs can benefit from raw but wolfdogs need it), building secure enclosures is expensive, maintaining a pack is expensive, exotic vet bills are expensive, they are much more sensitive to anesthesia and there are so many more medical complications, etc. The list really does go on. If you have had a wolfdog and it was a good experience, i am so happy for you. You lucked out with that individual animal and i am so happy that individual animal got a good life. But in general it isn't good for the wolfdogs themselves and irresponsible to support the pet trade or the breeding of them. If you choose to rescue one and it is legal in your state, i cannot overstate: be prepared. That animal is relying on you for a good life, and if you aren't able to provide that, placing wolf dogs elsewhere is insanely hard.
