Carl’s monologue telling Lydia about the first time he called Andrea “mom” has to be one of the best moments in the entire book run. Carl admits to killing Ben and Andrea immediately says “I love you” in response, making Carl realize that Andrea was now his mom. Carl’s little speech was pretty much the catalyst for the entire Whisperers arc, it helped convince Lydia that the Whisperers were assholes.

That speech actually takes place after the whisperer arc. It happens when Carl and Lydia are looking upon Andrea's grave and Carl is reminiscing. Still a very impactful moment after building up to Andrea potentially discovering what Carl had done. A beautiful moment.

Killing off Noah has to be one of the first thing I've truly hated about the show, I understand that this is a tough world but narratively, why keep up the trend of setting up a character for more only to kill them off. It makes me subconsciously not care for the characters cuz they could just die in the middle of their arcs so what's the point

The death of Noah kinda proved Gimple had really no idea what to do with his character. If you don’t know, the actor who played Noah was originally supposed to only be in 3 episodes before he was extended. Now this isn’t new. The actor who played T-Dog had the same thing. But what did we really get with Noah? Essentially a rehashed storyline of Beth’s of having a weak character become strong, but worse. What did he really do past season 5 episode 8? Not much. Out of the 6 episodes, 3 are in which nothing of significant happens. Given the character roster at the beginning of season 5, Tyreese should have been the one to die in Episode 14, while Noah should have stayed behind at the hospital with Beth staying on. It would have been a bitter sweet moment where although he wasn’t able to find his family, he was able to help reunite someone else’s while showing he’s strong. A shorter, but more mendable character, kinda like Otis in season 2.

@@Xpertfusion You have to kill off characters in the correct way tho simply giving time for couple episodes and killing them suddenly leaves sour taste in mouth. The reasons why Shane, and Hershel death hit so hard is because even though we spent so much couple seasons with them we knew them and it felt the story needed there deaths to progress forward. I'm not saying keeping Noah alive until season 11 but if you killing him off for just shock value and in the context that Glenn will die soon next season makes really just shock value. If they wanted someone to die to give drama between Glenn and Spencer I think killing Tara would've been better because she doesn't do much until she dies in season 9 like nothing important another character can't do and really wasn't a fan favorite. Noah it felt like the plot was giving him set up to become a fan favorite and have important storylines in future, but decided to kill him.

Fun fact: the episode in which Noah dies aired on Greg Nicotero’s birthday. If you know his history, you’ll know he got his start apprenticing under the great Tom Savini. I’ll never forgive gimple for killing Carl and then kill the guy carl killed himself for 2 seasons later. I’m sure Lincoln would’ve felt motivated to stay longer if they didn’t kill Carl or even if he left anyways, we could have an older Carl be the main character instead of it being this weird main characterless show that’s afraid to kill long-standing characters. Judith has only shown up like 4-5 times since Michonne left.

As a non comic book reader, I remember this being where my attention started to fall off and where I think the shows cracks started to appear. I agree that some of the best episodes were in this season but also some of the most forgettable or frustrating episodes where it felt like we were being taken in circles. I used to watch on cable week to week so whenever an episode led to no progression it was especially frustrating and this long season liked its cliffhangers! I'm sure binge watching it might help out this issue so I might give it another go!

I feel like this is one of the seasons where every episode did lead to progression though. This is the season with the most storylines, they litteraly only had time for one episode of the group surviving on the road before reaching Alexandria, that's how fast things were going and progressing. The lack of progression is more of a Season 7 and 8 problem, which I feel could've been very easily condensed into one season, Season 7 being the first 8 episodes, Season 8 being the last 8

Tbh, I always thought the Rick, Jessie and Pete storyline in the show was executed weirdly. Rick seemed to be holding back killing Pete before he even knew that he was abusing Jessie, he just sees them, Rick waves and Jessie and she waves back, and Pete turns her away, and Rick reaches for his gun. Maybe it's supposed to illustrate his survival instinct kicking in, he's so used to having to kill people and grabbing his gun in dangerous situations, but it just felt weird that he would even think about killing Pete before knowing the facts. Then in the next episode Pete talks to Rick and tension builds between them as he sees what kind of man he is, and then Carol tells him that Pete is beating Jessie and tells him they'll have to kill him, a far cry from Carol in season 1 🤣. But when Rick confronts Jessie about it and tells her that he can help get her out of this situation, after Deanna talks him out of killing Pete, she asks if he would do this for anyone. And he says no. NO. NO?!?! WTF?! Is the show seriously telling us that Rick, who was a cop before the apocalypse, who's literal job it was to keep people safe, who cares so much about his family that he would kill himself for them, that has led these people to safety throughout all their trials and hardships, someone who, while having to commit some immoral acts, is deep down a good man trying to do the right thing, is saying that if it wasn't Jessie, he wouldn't help her?! That the only reason he's saving her from an abusive husband is because he has a crush on her???? I never understood this. Maybe someone can explain it to me, maybe you will ten minutes from now 🤣, but the whole thing was done so weirdly and in a way that seemed out of character for Rick

5:21 as a plumber I occasionally wonder how I could best put my skills to use in such an apocalypse given that sanitary, drinkable water (ie potable) and waste disposal are a VITAL pillar of society. So as a plumber I gotta ask…. How the FUCK do they have running water?? I guess most people don’t think about it but running water, supplied to home sinks the way it is currently, requires a pressurized, systematic grid. Basically you need electricity to keep turbines and the whole system moving as intended. If there is no pressure from a central plant water CANNOT be pushed to your home and out the spout. The effort required to create an off-grid plumbing system delivering POTABLE water to dozens of individual homes would require not only an insane amount of work and manpower but also either a VERY experienced plumber, hydroelectric engineer, or incredible knowledge and ingenuity of a layman to plan out. I’m not sure how “off grid” Alexandria was before the apocalypse but they certainly had electricity and used contemporary plumbing systems even if they used all Septic tanks for disposal. Basically you would need to convert or build a water tower of some kind, figure out a way to keep it full AND covered to prevent vermin contamination. Then you would need to figure out a way to make a LARGE air admittance valve to pressurize the flow downward into your rerouted water supply system. Oh and the faucet pressure would be terrible. Shit man I bet I could write a better spinoff than Fear on this premise alone. The supply runs to build this kind of shit could take entire seasons. Trade deals, bartering, knowledge exchange. Man that would be awesome. Edit also as an aside I find it hilarious how “poufy” Aaron’s hair is in the comic.

I’m no expert man, but I did have a class on this in physics, well in the show they specify they had solar panels if I remember correctly, and idk if they specified this but I’d guess just like a well, they dug until they struck a water source and I guess just created a sort of system from there, Deanna and reg explained to the group at the beginning how Alexandria before the ZA was meant to be a self sufficient community, and they used the materials for a mall nearby to build the rest, so I’m guessing that’s the explanation but like I said, I’m no expert bro

I think what you say about Noah's is the one of the biggest arguments and complaints about the show thematically and narratively. TWD is a show set in the zombie apocalypse and the expectation is that anyone can die. Indeed that is what made the show so compelling in the early seasons, that constant sense of dread and unexpectedness because no one was safe and you couldn't get too attached to anyone, much like with GOT. However, over time, I feel like the show became more about killing off characters for shock value rather than it making sense narratively, and it usually involved giving a side character more screentime leading up to it, baiting the audience into thinking they would play a bigger role, and killing them off before reaching their full potential. We knew that the top main lead characters were probably never going to die, especially after say season 3 or 4 when most of the OG's had already been killed off, and so the secondary and tertiary characters were fair game. But even then, over the seasons, more and more great characters were killed off until you realised there was no one left you actually liked or cared about unless you're a Daryl and Carol fan, and with Carl's death, Rick's departure and Michonne leaving soon after, I think a lot of people lost interest and tuned out, if they hadn't already from Glenn's death or how mediocre season 7 and 8 were. And the ironic thing is that most people now complain that not enough big characters have died in the last 2 seasons, but I think that's because they had already killed off so many, they want to hold onto the ones that are left. Youre never going to please everyone, that much is clear, but I do think that a lot of the deaths from season 5 onwards were unnecessary and or poorly executed, whereas the deaths in season 1-4, barring Andrea, made sense for the story and made for phenomenal television, and made the remaining characters better. Beth, Tyreese and Noah especially were so wasted

Well said. Although Noah is what I consider is a worse version of T-Dog. As both actors were only supposed to be on for a few episodes before their role expanded. Although not perfect their were some fun T-Dog moments in seasons 2-3. Where as we get basically a rehashed storyline that Beth had about a weak teenager being strong, but worse. I’ve always argued he should have been an Otis character, short but sweet. And considering the actor playing Noah was only hired for 3 episodes, his storyline could have easily ended with him staying behind at the hospital, allowing Beth to continue on and have Tyreese take Noah’s death.

Season 9-11 I think they been doing deaths better like the characters they killed mostly the side unimportant character except for like 2. Like I remember after the prison they really just killed off fanfavorites for no other reason than I suspect was shock value. Like in early seasons the major deaths we spent seasons with these characters like no one majored died season 1 and everyone loves that season. We spent a couple seasons with most of the major people who died in early days and there death while shocking felt natural story wise. Like the characters they been killing past couple scenes most are forgettable side characters besides a couple but when they kill the side characters off they make it memorable like Alpha putting there heads on spikes. Like no one whose head on spikes I gave a crap about but the way the scene was shot and characters reactions gave me more chills than most deaths in the show.

Unfortunately Carl's actor simply wasn't up to par compared to the other master actors on screen and what few lines he did have often took me out of the scene because the difference in skill was so jarring. This isn't his fault. He got the role of a lifetime at a very young age and history has shown that messes with your head and just like any other profession it's almost unfair comparing a child to people who have been honing their craft for decades before their big break. But none of that changes the jarring difference in skill. It was even more unfair he was often paired directly with the superb Andrew Lincoln. Glenn had the same problem first season but he got to hone his craft while paired with other less amazing actors and since he was an adult he could focus on perfecting his skills instead of school and growing up and by season 3-4 he could hold his own even beside Norman Reedus and Andrew Lincoln. Today you could even argue he's one of the best working actors out there.

Yeah people wanted him to be the new main character but I don’t even think Chandler Riggs was prepared for that. It seems he didn’t take his acting as serious as he got older and didn’t learn anything from watching his scene partners like Andrew Lincoln act.
@josephmatthews7698
@josephmatthews7698 Жыл бұрын
@@berserk4souls yeah and like I said to be fair he was a kid so acting not being his number one priority isn't really a knock against him and pretty understandable. It was just jarring on screen because he was almost always paired with legends like Neegan, Rick, Shane or Daryl so it was really noticable. He definitely could not have carried the show as the main character and killing him off though controversial was a smart decision.

The Rick/Pete fight scene has to be one of my top TWD moments. The way Andrew Lincoln acts that scene is just too good. His expressions and gestures during the "We need to *control* who lives here" and "You're gonna kick *ME* out?" lines are just so brilliant. Awesome retrospective again. I very much agree with the plot on Noah. After losing Beth to save him, losing Ty to the walkers, and setting up his future plots, it just seems like such a "Gotcha, he's dead too!" moment.

One thing I think a lot of people had forgotten as the show progressed in later seasons, is that leading/semi-leading characters were always built up before their deaths (e.g. Jim, Amy, Dale and Hershel). While you can argue that Dale's death was due to outside reasons, the few episodes leading up to his death, saw him do a lot more, especially since he became the voice of reason for the group. Hershel's death in season 4 was also built up, until he was beheaded by the Governor. It had always been a thing for characters to have some sign of progression leading up until their deaths, and I think Beth, Tyreese and Noah (the more controversial ones) are no exception to this. There also used to be a joke that would be brought up during Comic-Con panels where the actors would say things like "You're always dreading the day you get handed a script, because you never know whether or not that day will come where you get killed off" because a lot of the actors really didn't know when they'd die, it almost felt like a roulette to a lot of them, especially for characters like T-Dog and Lori, for example. That being said, there had come a time around season 6 through 8 where it really did feel like characters were being dropped off for "shock value" or no reason at all (e.g. Carl, Abraham, Tobin and the Carson brothers). Even some of the episodes from season 9 until now have felt like that with deaths like Henry's, Jesus' and Siddiq's which felt rather pointless in the grand scheme of things. I won't deny that the writing has taken a rather odd turn in the show post season 5, but I still think some of these earlier controversial deaths had been done intentionally and aren't all that different to what had come in the seasons before, but that's just my opinion.

I have absolutely loved these videos, these got me back into the swing of The Walking Dead right before Season 11 Part 2 and man this season has brought some PEAK TWD imo. But, I want to say I like how broken apart these videos are! With how complex the storylines diverge and pop in and out between seasons, I worry for your sanity because of how hectic everything is going to be. Don't turn into Charlie Day. Hopefully you are able to keep these videos up at a pace you are comfortable with! Break them apart as you need to keep yourself sane! This content has genuinely been amazing keep up the good work! Wait now I have to wait for the phrase. Also, yes to badass Carol. I remember laughing out loud at her physical acting, most notably her facial expressions. Melissa McBride really started to shine this season and I am so happy they kept her a mainstay. I theorized numerous deaths for her (I thought she would get both Glenn and Andrea's deaths at point) but I am continuously glad I am proven wrong. And since I keep rambling... Gimple, man oh man. I thank Gimple for the highs, but have a hard time forgiving him for the lows. I am glad Angela Kang is in charge now, so I will leave it at that. Season 8 was where all of my friends stopped watching TWD. I continued on into Season 9. Wait ... NO PHRASE?! I will say No Way Out is the phrase. Good enough for me.

I totally agree with your take on season 11, it's currently my 3rd favourite season. My ranking goes as follows 1. Season 5 2. Season 4 3. Season 11 4. Season 10 5. Season 6 6. Season 3 7. Season 9 8. Season 2 9. Season 1 10. Season 7 11. Season 8 There's a big drop in between 9th and 10th place if you were concerned about the placement of season 1 Also, while I of course agree that seasons 7 and 8 were the lowest stretch in the show by far, I disagree with gimple being at fault, if you look at who wrote the writer's for the episodes in seasons 7 and 8, the only ones gimple wrote were the standout episodes that were actually good, take that along with the fact that he wrote almost all of the other standout episodes from after he started writing for the series, I think gimple did pretty much nothing but good for the show

@@iBLIV I don't believe it's recency bias as season 9 is almost 3 years old, they're just THAT good, the reason why I gave season 9 7th place was because of the middle section, I found it to be quite dull, but the first 5 episodes and the last 4 were great, episode 5 of course being the highlight as possibly the best episode in the series

Now I don’t what you mean by how Enid season 6 got better when I’d argue she never did. She is this very odd character who only exists and I mean ONLY exists to be Carl’s girlfriend. Because the moment Carl’s dead in season 8, she has no reason to exist. In fact I would put it that if Carl never died, there would have been a near 100% chance that she would have survived the pikes.

I think Noah being set up as a possible long term character and then being suddenly killed off is a sign of the times in a way. They did this with Beth a little bit by expanding on her storyline in the hospital just to kill her when the group saves her. During the time weekly TV shows were very popular. Particularly, I remember the scene where Glenn and Nicholas are trapped at the dumpster and friends in high school debating whether Glenn died or not (I wasn’t watching yet and I guess they hadn’t read the comics). This period of TV it was common for characters to be killed off for shock value. I feel like twd fell into this trend during this time especially once the other communities are introduced and there’s sooooo many random new characters all the time.

I'll be honest, I don't have anywhere near the attachment for any of the spin-offs as I have with the original. I've seen them once and that's pretty much it - I just haven't found any value in revisiting them, so unfortunately I'm not the right person for that job. I've debated doing retrospectives on the Telltale games, but as of right now, there are absolutely no plans to cover the TV spin-offs in any in-depth fashion. If anything, I'd just do a single video covering all of them at once.

As a final comment to season 5, let’s me just say that the way Beth, Tyreese and Noah were handled pretty much hinted at the shit storm that was to come for the rest of the Gimple era. Gimple took Tyreese, a character who had so much potential in season 5 and made him the most PATHETIC and annoying pacifist I’ve seen. So basically his entire season 5 storyline was f*cked. Then there’s Beth’s in which it ranged to average to even good, only to kill her off for no real reason. In fact I have some very strong suspicions with some evidence I’ve looked up that may have hinted she was never supposed to be killed off this season. Then there’s Noah who I describe is a worse/ rehash version of Beth’s “weak teenager becoming strong” arc. And when we get finally something that could make him stand out (him becoming an architect) he gets killed off. I got a real bone to pick with Gimple and season 6 is gonna be a shitshow.

I actually quite enjoyed the dove path that Carl took in the show where he was advocating for peace and less violence. I do wish they played more into a teenage angst and rebellion against his father angle. Also, you could shake up some of his comic stories. Like when sneaking to go kill Negan, have him be more successful. Actually sneaking in and playing it smarter, but he can't bring himself to go through with it. Continue with him being a mediator and it would have fit perfectly into the Whisperer arc where Carl did kind of go with Lydia in the comics.
