One of the devs said THIS was the moment Kratos changed his fate from being killed by Thor to being worshipped by the people of the realms. By telling Atreus to open his heart, he went from being the destroyer to the rebuilder.

I always thought it would be Atreus who kills Kratos because he would turn on him due to his lack of remorse, and Kratos could never bring himself to kill his son and so accepts his fate. Him choosing empathy means Atreus never has to make that choice

Which was stupid because when Kratos said it the first time he had just battled Baldur and Atraeus said he understood killing animals for food and draugur that were already dead but what about people? In response, Kratos said "close your heart to it, on our journey we will be attacked by all manner of creature. Close your heart to their desperation, close your heart to their suffering, do not allow yourself to feel for them. They will not feel for you." this was proven later when Atraeus had just killed a cannibal reaver who wanted to kill and eat him with no empathy or remorse for his child victim. Kratos saw the horror and guilt on Atraeus's face and he said, "close your heart to it" as a reminder of what he said. All this was beautiful and a growing-up moment as Atraeus is being prepared for manhood and facing the world by a rational, protective, and competent father. All good fathers know that it's their job to keep their kids grounded and realistic so they can make it through life. I loved these moments until the writers of Ragnorok strawmanned the first game with that scene. Atraues said, "I know, I know close your heart to it." Meanwhile, I was yelling at the screen saying " No you idiot those are random civilians, not people attacking you like in the first game. Kratos go remind your retarded son what you said." Then Kratos comes, opens his mouth, and says "no I was wrong open your heart to them." At that moment I lost it I was like "these writers just character-assassinated Kratos and ruined the best moment from the first game and butchered the context of the quote with their low IQ potato-brained, revisionist historian, take!!!"

@@wingsoffreedom3589 I'm pretty sure that Kratos is saying he is wrong because he unintentionally instilled this mindset into Atreus. In the 2018 game, they never go out of their way to help anyone, it was mostly favors done for some sort of incentive, never out of pure empathy. Kratos admitting he was wrong in this scene is more so reflective on the entirety of his parenting rather than just that quote specifically. He's admitting that he was wrong for not taking into account empathy when dealing with Atreus. At least that's what I get out of the scene, though I can understand how just taking this scene at face value can seem like a homicide of the quote from the 2018 game.

This is the culmination of Kratos character arc over the Norse saga, he went to war once again to basically destroy another pantheon, resigning himself to once again being a monster of vengeance. Seeing how much the violence pained his son, he finally starts walking the path of justice, even his journal entries regarding his allies shows a genuine fondness for those around him. I wonder if Kratos' voice breaking is just Christopher Judge's tremendous acting chops of if he was really fighting to hold it together.

I'm sure a lot of us know this but just to point out the brilliant callback, there's a very clear reason why Kratos chose to protect instead of just destroy here. This whole scene gave him bad flashbacks of when he burned a village full of innocents down and accidentally killed his first wife and child. The moment he saw Atreus utter "Close uour heart", he is visibly horrified by what he taught his son so he had to stop to contemplate and decided to backtrack and firmly tell Atreus to open his heart. The moment he changed fate was the moment he chose to avoid the very same mistake, particularly the worst mistake of his life. He used that guilt as a reminder to never do it again, to BE BETTER.

I like the added nuance of how much more progressive Kratos is to embrace new mindsets and cultures. In real life, a lot of parents and elders would be very attached to their old ways, and would consider their "Good ol' days" to be the best representation of their culture. It often brings them at odds against their children who want to evolve and change, and to grow beyond the evils of their culture. Here, Kratos brilliantly acknowledges how much he does miss his home, and his first family. But he still does acknowledge that Spartain upbringing was more abusive and damaging than strengthening. He still carries on his Spartan discipline and knows the benefit of having focus and determination. But he also knows that the only things he needs to pass on to the next generation is only the best of what the old days had to offer, minus the worst. Not just for his son, but also for himself. He can teach Atreus to fight, be fast, and to think tactically, but he can still let Atreus be kind, compassionate, and empathetic, and in turn, he himself can be too. He can still be the best of Sparta, but, he can replace the worst of Sparta, with the best of himself. He will always be a God of War, but can still fight for peace.

The Norns were right. Kratos 'of Sparta' *did* die. In the battle of Ragnarök, Kratos of Sparta died. He died the moment Kratos acted opposite to his nature, and told his son to open his heart. And the man that was born anew wasn't the same person as before; he was no longer the Ghost of Sparta, no longer 'Kratos of Sparta'.

One of the many things that makes this scene so great is that the turning point at which Kratos realises how to let Atreus be the man he is meant to be is a call back to a small moment of conversation included to pass time during the weakest mechanical element of these games (the climbing). Players are hardwired to expect these little conversations as you traverse between combat encounters to be small character building moments. Using them as the fulcrum upon which an entire character arc will form is impressive writing of a kind that can only be delivered in this medium.

I feel like Kratos also opened his heart in this very moment. When he says, "That was your mother's wish...and mine as well". I think he was saying he too has opened his heart to people. We see it with his relationships with all the side characters in Ragnarok. He really felt bad about Brok, he found common ground and potential love in Freya, his relationship with Atreus has become something of beauty.

i feel like this is a message for all the guys who were told to be heartless machines. If you think about it, we constantly hear "real men dont show emotion, real men are warriors" to which that was what kratos was doing to atreus in order to survive in the world. Realizing that innocent people were suffering, kratos realizes that he was wrong about not feeling anything and taught atreus to dont allow people's own insecurities and sense of truth define who he is are as a person. Out of all the games I have played, this game taught me the most. If you think about it, kratos was an emotionless machine who killed for the Gods to the point he even slaughter innocents including his own family. Here in ragnarok, he doesnt want atreus to make the same mistake and do the opposite.

It's still stupid because when Kratos said it the first time he had just battled Baldur and Atraeus said he understood killing animals for food and draugur that were already dead but what about people?

@@wingsoffreedom3589 hmm I think u look at this from the wrong perspective. Kratos said that to artreus because he wanted him to become heart closed warrior. In the ragnarok he understood artreus should be different, that Faye wanted it and Kratos wants it. Artreus feels for animals, pure people etc. Kratos understood in this scene that everything he thought artreus was good beside this. He doesnt want to teach artreus revenge and cold war. He want them to be better that this. And its different context you know-killing in self defense/kill inncient ppl at the war

@@pro100wnick11 you are writing in a context that doesn't exist that's the problem. The writers wrote the original scene with one context and then pivoted in this game without a setup. Had they done it right after the fight with the reaver in the first game they would have added a Midgardian civilian who needed help and Kratos refused to allow Atraeus to help telling him "close your heart to it" which would have validated your position and expanded the context for the payoff in this game but that never happened which is called bad writing.
