Family Adventures on Trikes

3 жыл бұрын

In this recumbent trike touring blog we take you to a small tour on two Steintrikes WildOne recumbent trikes in the Kučaj and Beljanica national park in East Serbia. To reach there, we take the trikes by car to Paraćin, and starting from there we make a 3-day tour around the area. We had one idea in mind, but as it usually happens in non-urban areas, after getting advice from the locals, we had to change our plans to stay on the roads. The map is further down in the description :)
Location: Kučaj and Beljanica national park, Serbia
Filmed: September 2020
Trikes: WildOne by Steintrikes

envious of what you have there... In the USA, you can't leave your trike/packs behind for even a moment or it will be stolen.. It is so ingrained in me to think that your things are not safe at night while you are in the tent.. What a difference.. You have so much to be grateful for. The Trust you have cannot be bought. May God keep you both safe on your travels.

Thank you! Yes, I would say that while traveling around here, it is safe to leave your things next to your tent, but we still do lock our trikes. 😁 Also, people around here usually highly respect and appreciate travelers, which also makes us feel safe while camping, and welcome in any place we visit. However, in the cities the situation is different, you shouldn't leave your bike/trike unattended or without a good lock/chain.

@@bici.family How do you lock your trikes?
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 жыл бұрын
@@ricknoe942 in fact, we prefer not to leave them out of sight, but when we have to, we use the ABUS chain locks, and find an adequate bike stand or other suitable object to lock them to. There is no lock that works 100%, but so far we trust these chain locks, we have used them for the past ~10 years for our bikes. They are quite heavy, but then they also have many protection levels.

I really enjoyed your vlog. Beautiful country! I own a trike as well, but over here (the Netherlands) there are no hills, let alone mountains. I admire the both of you being able to climb steep roads on your trikes. I can tell how hard that is, after having made some day tours in South Germany. Must admit I transformed my trike to an e-trike ;)

I understand what you mean! Where we live, in Vojvodina (the northern part of Serbia), we also live in a plain, with no mountains. To the point that people consider crossing a bridge a climb, and they put their feet down and walk the bike over the bridge. For us, every uphill is a challenge, but it is doable, just takes more time. Especially for me 😂

We also have two trikes, we put one on the roof. We used 3 standard bicycle rails, so nothing too special or expensive.

Thank you for the comment! We tried exactly like that with three rails, and we can put one trike like that, but now we are testing some ideas to put both of them up. We'll let you know how it goes if we succeed 😊

Thank you, Jonas! Trikes are really great for any balance issues, but even when you don't have any issues, they are very comfortable and fun to ride. I don't know what trikes you're considering at the moment, but if you want to know more about the trikes that we ride, we have a video "Steintrikes Wild One Review | Our recumbent trikes in detail" where we show all the bits and pieces of our two trikes. If you're interested, you can follow this link to view it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3uxoIajqrh9fZY In any case, we wish you a quick recovery and a lot of kilometers on whatever you chose 😊

Other possibility is to use a small trailer, there you can carry easily both trikes and all matters of kids, camping, ... I live in Germany and here they are very common yo see. Greetings, JL.
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for both suggestions! The trailer would be a bit more complicated for us - 1) we don't have a hitch so we would have to install one as well, and 2) it needs to be stored somewhere when not in use. But then you have an easy mode to carry the trikes and everything else... For now we would prefer the roof rack option, but we have to try it out and see how it goes.

Thank you for your comment and suggestion! I have checked those out, and unfortunately, I don't see them available anywhere in Europe, and to ship from the USA is quite a costly option (if it is an option at all). But they do seem very practical, just what we would need!

I am really enjoying your videos. I can get both of our trikes inside our Toyota RAV4, but like you, it pretty much fills it up. I bought a small 4’ x 8’ trailer from Harbor Freight ( don’t know if you have their stores over there or not) on sale for $250.00 U. S. I bought a sheet of plywood for a floor and built sides using 2X4’s. Plenty of room for two trikes. Tom Cross,USA

Thanks for the suggestion - that is definitely one option we have been looking into! But first we are considering the idea to try to see if we can somehow reuse our standard bike rooftop carriers - we have four of those so would be nice if we can just reuse them. We plan to give it a try as soon as it gets a bit warmer outside.

@@bici.family how heavy are your trikes and could you lift them that high and lower them with out straining or hurting yourself . mine is in the region of 21kgs with a fairing so no chance doing that with mine good luck with that and I be interested in the finished product of what you do and if you do reuse your roof top carriers. I wonder if you could attach a hoist pulley system that could take the strain of the lifting out, you clamp on some how and take it off put in the back when complete. just an idea for you,
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 жыл бұрын
@@alistairriggs5911 that is a valid point, the trikes are not light! We have yet to test everything that a roof setup involves, but as we are two we imagine we can lift them if we do it together. Will keep you updated!

I know it is an individual thing but I notice you ride with the ball of your foot if not even your toes on the pedal. I heard and read a couple of times that, with recumbents, it's better to have the pedal more towards the arch of the foot. I tried it by moving my cleats as close to the arch as possible and found I stopped having a couple of ankle issues. Just a thought - maybe try it, you might like it.
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice! I moved the cleat to the rear-most position that my shoes allow, but so far I cannot say that I notice a difference. We'll see on longer rides 👍
