Learning to jab? I thought kung Fu is much older than Boxing & since when basic attack become exclusive boxing or kickboxing style

@@malakatan3235 Please learn the difference between a straight punch and a jab. A jab is a type of straight punch but not all straight punches are a jab. I'm sure kungfu utilizes a lot of straight punches. It's more like a difference in language where english has a more specific word for a specific type of punch defined by form, method, and functions. "Basic attack" can't describe the differences between the many types of punches whereas the term jab, cross, hook, uppercut, and etc describes perfectly what type of punch that is being thrown. This also applies to kicking (i.e. front kick, side kick, axe kick, push kick, spinning hook kick, flying back kick, etc). You could call a punch, a kick, a headbutt, an elbow, or a knee a "basic attack" but do people automatically know what you're talking about? That's why we have these terms in english. I'm sure there are also similar terms in chinese languages, so it's probably just a misunderstanding between people that have differences in native languages. Although feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

THIS is the difference between Boxing and Throwing Punches. He could have stayed on the "Outside" of the bigger guys "jab" and he would have been safe BUT he can't hit form there so he used angles, footwork, and slipping to get close throw a combo then step off. The Big Guy must have been so confused.

4:33 Boxers do think differently than that. Every little punch that lands doesn’t do damage. Sometimes we take a couple shots on purpose just to get out adder up. Not a lot but sometimes you just want to feel a guy’s power. As long as it doesn’t hit your chin or temple you’re likely going to be fine. A good hard shot will renew that fire to attack and make you forget about how tired you are in the right circumstances. I gotta give the Kung Fu guy some credit here though. He must spar like a boxer more than most king fu guys I’ve seen. He doesn’t have that same panicked, rapid blinking when he takes a shot and has the presents of mind to punch back while under fire. If you haven’t sparred much those are usually the sure fire ways to tell. This was a good video

Overall, I think it think it's very hard to call the bigger fighter a representative of any traditional CMA. Any success he has is from training solid boxing fundamentals. Of course, possibly in conjunction with other arts, but those just don't show up. Unless lead hook, rear hook is a common technique in some CMA.

It is super strange that a lot of Kung Fu guys in China cannot apply their forms in a real fight like the ones from my "Kata Applications in MMA" videos. I've found some Karate fighters who could make practical applications of their own forms (e.g. Robbie Lawler and Machida brothers) in MMA fights. Some of those forms are unorthodox methods of bareknuckle counterstrikes like old school pugilism whereas are hand traps or grip fighting like Koryu Jujutsu. On the other hand, those Chinese practitioners often end up fighting like unpolished kickboxers with weird hands and sloppy tactics. The guys from Choy Li Fut however look at least like unconventional strikers with maniacal ways of hammer fists. Shuai Jiao is the most practical one among Chinese arts since it is literally jacket wrestling. Even Xu Xiaodong acknowledges Shuai Jiao for clear reasons.
@resonance10
@resonance10 Жыл бұрын
I have watched the video "Kata Applications in MMA" you posted. All those applications are well known in any decent kungfu school. You are right it is strange how bad the kungfu is IN China specifically. I believe this is a cultural issue particular to the modern era of that country not the styles themselves. The Cultural Revolution changed so much; but there are folks who know what they are doing, they are just not the well known self promoted 'masters' that end up in videos like this. Big respect to Xu Xiaodong.

If I'm not mistaken...it has become likes this: u now have wushu, which, to quote a video I just watched yesterday, is divided into 2 specialties: tao lu, which is purely demonstrative intense acrobatics with a Kung Fu flair, and sanda, which is kickboxing with takedowns. Outside of this "govt wushu", there's the traditional Kung Fu styles, which at present have a reputation of not sparring a lot. What I think could work, is if Sanda fighters took Kung Fu discipleship like a kind of supplementary training in specific movement principles. The same way Conor studied with portal, Wei Li with Hyperarch Training, Kyle Dake with Functional Patterns. That's what I think Kung Fu styles are, theories of movement patterns, take the extreme difference between the short power and full body tension of Chow Gar, and the ultra loose shoulders and long range speed of Tong Bei, as an example

That was painful to watch. This is what I saw… I’m sure that the root of KF striking should be the same as any pugilist art whereby power comes from the legs and core. His foot work looked OK, but none of his punches involved much core or legs. Hence he’s fighting boxer’s legs and core with just his arms. Whatever power advantage KF guy might have had is wasted there. As far range, KFG was not keeping the boxer at range. Not sure why not. Slipping and angles? Non-existent, as was conditioning. Boxer was really taking it easy on KF guy. It could have been a slaughter. 😬

Their martial arts is more of a hobby and exercise than something that can be translated into competition. Sure, might they be able to fend off one or maybe two attackers who never studied any kind of martial arts in their life? Yes. But can they use what they learned in their traditional study in a more dynamic environment? Like for example, this kung fu guy in tbe video... the amount of times he drops his hands when he punches and just generally is shameful. Thanks for the acknowledgement Jerry, you're welcome to take my theory into consideration. Been a viewer of the channel for a while now, love the analytical approach. From what I have seen, an example of universal fighting fundamentals that I have discovered from watching your videos is that one should almost always keep their hands up. But then the problem is, if a cma guy keep their hands up, because he also understands the importance of doing so through analyzing fights, people will be very quick to say that he's "just doing kickboxing", almost as if boxing/kickboxing has a monopoly on "putting ones hands up". And this is what I find obnoxious with the "just boxing/kickboxing" crowd, it is as if their martial art has a monopoly on something as simple as putting your hands up, very silly. One simply cannot win a fight without employing some sort of fighting fundamentals, but when the boxing/kickboxing crowd "monopolizes" fighting fundamentals, then literally every single person that practices martial arts other than boxing/kickboxing that fights and wins will be subjected to the "just boxing/kickboxing", comment. I believe that this is the answer to the phenomenon of: "...And then when I feature people doing high level kungfu, the answer is “I don’t see any kungfu.” So the answer will always be “it’s boxing brah” or “it’s just kickboxing brah....”.

Not bad for the kungfu master. He can withstand a good beating. Boxer seems to have a lot of missed shots. Perhaps the timing was wrong.
