Great review! I use these paints on rice paper - I think this is what they were intended for. On watercolour paper I have noticed with great delight that they do not tend to cauliflower and create fewer backruns. Transparency is not an issue if used on rice paper, but on watercolour paper it is - at least for me. When empty I refill them with my western style watercolours because I just looove the pans for their size - and the rounded pan edges put less wear on my brushes!.

Excellent comparison of watercolors and lovely scenes on your swatch cards. I bought this same set about 4 years ago and now the price has almost doubled. The color pans are very shallow, you are not getting as much paint as it appears, and the paints crack and fall out of the pans. I do still like them but would not pay the current price. The paints can be nearly as opaque as gouache, and I use them for calligraphy and greeting cards. Thank you for the video!

Thanks for this review! Super helpful. I've actually been using the Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors for a long time now, (for landscapes, skies, portraits, etc) but have recently started using other watercolor paints, such as Sennelier, or Winsor & Newton, and I find that these are brighter and more transparent than the Kuretake. I won't stop using them because they are cool and fun to use anyway, but it's always fun to see reviews and check what other artists think about them. Thank you and happy painting!!

Wowowow! Loved how you compared it with other brand swatches you created! So wonderful! Thank you! I did notice something in the comments though--currently, there is a Kuratake Gansai Tambai has a 48 color set on Amazon which is cheaper than White Nights in the USA (49.49 < 69.90). I still feel a bit more drawn to White Nights as my first watercolor set, though the Kuratake has more colors now.

Hi wonder woman. 😊 Thank you for the kind words. 🙏 Yes, Kuretake has a bigger set of 48 colors that is so attractive and for sure gonna be enjoyable to use. But ofcourse, White Nights is still (for me personally) a better deal because it is a traditional watercolor and which provides pigment information. I also prefer White Nights texture. Whats good at Kuretake is its wide pans that are I believe really meant for the Japanese brushes for their lettering style. 😊🙏

I own these and I actually regret having bought this as my first real watercolor because it doesn't give the experience of "watercolors" because they don't really layer well. They lift very easily and that's difficult to really practice layer properly. Also, if the paper you're using is a bad one, and you add too much paint on them, they tend to not dry matte like most watercolors, they can get a little shiny. They aren't lightfast but that's okay, you wouldn't be selling your artwork with this anyway. But all in all, they're fine, they're still watercolors but just not the watercolors you should get if you're a beginner.

These are really pretty colors. I've heard each pan tends to have multiple pigments though. And for any Vegans out there, these paints don't use gum arabic or honey for a binder, instead they use animal products like fish skin and other stuff. Just a heads up. Kuretake Gansi has been a hit with crafters for cards etc and mixed media. They don't seem to be interested in light fastness only that it behaves like a watercolour, mixes well together and is bright and colourful. The DS primatek set seems to be in the same vain as well as sets coming out from Altenew,, Arteza and other similar brand's that bring out acrylics, watercolour, watercolour pens, pencils, markers colouring pencils etc.They are trying to compete but only do sets not singles
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 4 жыл бұрын
Shouldnt the crafters actually be more concerned about lightfastness since their outputs usually have shape, volume or texture and cant be scanned? OR does crafter really just dont care that much if the colors of their artworks fade? The Primateks are yes, minerals and stones crashed finely and combined with a binder to be used as watercolors. Theyre not pigments. But atleast they are lightfast. hehe

@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 4 жыл бұрын
The definitions are still being disputed by artists up until today. But generally, the definitionnof watercolor is painting medium made out of pigments combined with binders. It may be dried to cakes, tablet or kept in tubes and are activated through water. The surface is a white card or paper and the practice is to make transparent output. So having that definition, we can say that gansai is watercolor and glue is one of its binders like how they use honey as binders for sennelier and mgraham. Actually, if you go the website of kuretake gansai tambi (i placed it at the description box), they are advertising their product as watercolors. It just so happened that it is thick because of glue so it is great for craftworks and calligraphy. But still, it can be used to make translucent paintings. So this makes me conclude na Ang Watercolor is a medium that can be reactivated with water and can produce transparent/translucent painting may the binders and additives be glue, honey, oxgall, gum arabic, etc. ☺️ That's just my understanding ha. Hehe

@onemig00
@onemig00 4 жыл бұрын
They're colors that are reactivated with water...so yes, still watercolor. And since the word "Gansai" is already included in the name, it's not misleading. Gansai is a Japanese painting style so it never claimed to be Western Watercolors or to be like them. :) but at least we get to be exposed to different cultures

Hmm, I can't seem to find your other comment so I can't reply +Tales Of Color Re: Gouache True, that's activated by water as well. Poster paint too. And I saw some water activated oil paints (how even?! But there they were). So what is watercolor? Even inks use gum Arabic and pigment. And if it's referring to the transparency it limits the definition to Western Watercolors and exclude Asian Watercolors... Marketing dilemma indeed... "Japanese watercolors" are as safe as they can get, I think. Just stress the "Japanese". . . Also PRANG watercolors also leave a sheen because of the gelatin/glue or whatever it is. Maybe the same as the Gansai's. I have only ever tried the Kuretake Transparent Watercolors (Phys) the one that comes in white plastic case with a water brush and pen as well as the one that comes in what looks like a CD case. Those feel closer to my other watercolors and I don't remember if they had a sheen (gave them away because I wasn't using them as much as I'd like)

I wanna put my Japanese to good use here and clear up some misconceptions about Gansai. To define Gansai we need to define what paint is. Paint is usually a pigment plus a binder. Watercolor: Pigment plus gum arabic in most cases Gansai: Pigment plus a combo of animal hide glue and others like bees wax, sugar syrup, surgar, gum arabic What can you use Gansai for??? Practically anything you want to, but due to the different ingredients (mainly the glue) it behaves differently. Watercolors and Gansai offer different textures Watercolors are thin Whereas Gansai is a lot thicker and gluey bc of the glue So don't refer to Gansai as a Watercolor It is also misleading to review it as a "watercolor" when Gansai is usually used on rise paper. There are great Japanese artists out there who use it correctly

Thank you for pointing it out. Your explanation is very clear. But what confuses here is the manufacturers themselves. In their information paper cover, they call their product as "solid water colours" you can see it at 01:18 I don't know if it was intentionally done for commerical purpose, (to appeal to international market), or they just cant find an exact translation.

Even in their own website, they call it watercolor.. so sellers and artists use the term watercolor for this product.. www.gansaitambi.jp/en/

@@AllanJayQuesada This was not to punch down on you I love your channel and reviews I think it's a marketing thing where they are rying to appeal to a more Western market, which in the end is more misleading than it actually helps I tried to use these colors as watercolors myself on Western paper And some places of my paper had a weird sheen on it Probably from the glue And this is not what watercolors should be doing I think the marketing upsets more people than it does any good if I am honest Bc they should be advertising Japanese painting techniques along with the right brushes and paper with it

Yeah, I get it. 😁 I'm good and I'm actually happy to get information from my viewers. I get same issues on my review on Boku Ondu, which are actually also special paints made from burnt materials.. they're not advertising their paints as watercolors but alot of people has referred it already as watercolors because of its near-to-watercolor behaviour..

Maybe we should use that term "watercolour" more of a generic term or hypernym meaning that it's a colour that is activated with water, including watercolor (or Aquarellfarbe as it's called in my native German), gouache, gansai and opaque watercolours (which is a somewhat weird mix between watercolour and maybe gouache or acrylics. That's called Deckfarben in German and it's a staple supply in art classes in schools here.) There's probably more different art supplies that might well fall under that category, but aren't as well-known 🤔

I think the Gansai Tambi works well for pointed pen calligraphy because it’s solid and cheaper than buying individual bottles of calligraphy inks

That's a good point. Plus the pan sizes too also help in the craft.
