In this 10 minute Iyengar Yoga class, we look at different ways to access the Intermediate Pose, Kurmasana. In its classic action, this is an extremely intense forward bend. Kurmasana is a very strong pose and should not be attempted by those who are stiff or who are beginners to yoga. Don't force the body but relax into the pose to get the benefits from Kurmasana. When your body and mind are ready for these more advanced actions, you can release into it. Kurmasana calms the mind and improves lung function. It stretches arms, shoulders, and the spine as well as the hips and legs. So it really is a pose that involves the whole body. In this yoga tutorial, Yoga with Lin and Leo shows you how to prepare the body for Kurmasana; do be aware that coming into the full pose may take many months of dedicated practice to achieve. This tutorial shows you how to prepare the body in order to move you towards this challenging intermediate yoga pose.
You may need 2 foam pads and a yoga chair or sturdy dining or kitchen chair.
Although it is good to target particular regions in the body like this, yoga teaches us that our body and mind are part of a holistic entity. When we are tense and are experiencing mental stress, our necks and shoulders get tight. When our neck or shoulders are painful, it quite often causes headache and fatigue. Arthritic joints are often linked to depression and many skin conditions have been connected to a lack of diversity in our gut flora. The list of ways that the body and mind interact could go on and on.
