My issue is that for me, as someone who has very little knowledge about the game, it lacks identity. The weird thing about Concord is if you look at the lead devs and CEO they're the people that shipped Destiny 1 in 2014. They're Ex Bungie, working with Sony for their "Big GAAS launch" after Sony invested 3.6b in Bungie, whose CEO fired the CEO who ended up making this new company and Concord... so the parent studio that's meant to guide them into success are people who literally fought each other back in 2014-2016. That's bad business, and very embarrassing missed connection Jim Ryan proabably didn't pay attention to.

Fairgame$ really rubs me the wrong way. •The dollar sign in the name to give an on-the-nose signifier that the game is about money •The extremely brazen use of AI/machine learning as a sales pitch, at a time when crypto/NFTs/Web3 are far less potent buzzwords •The masks shown are of monkeys and garish rainbow skulls This feels like it was supposed to be an NFT game, and had to pivot once others in the games industry realized NFTs weren't the cash cow they were hoping for.

Let's put this straight, Concord on PC had a one time max population of around 600 players. Considering that when a game is launch hundreds of keys are given to the media to review the game, wel... one might think that at least half, if not more of those 600 were people that got free keys, then developers and friends also get free keys to give away etc. So that even shrinks more and more the total number of people that bought the game. To put in on poerspective the first trophy on PS5 you could get that was killing one enemy, was achieved by 1200 people by the time concord closed. So around that many people played the game... Absolute failure of a game, totally deserved, adn we all should celebrate it so the industry learn not to release terrible games.

Why does this have to feel so meta? It was 2006 when rage engine released that we started to hope that we could see a fallout game with better textures and less wonky physics. Cut to five years later rage is its own game. Fallout is still using the game brio engine. Chernobyl is releasing every other year as per tradition. And we're all wondering why the game company that bought both fallout and rage is not using the new Unreal Engine to make a fallout game that's better than the old Gabriel engine. Maybe their development cycles just didn't line up and they both had to release what game they were working on that year but when rage 2 was announced alongside the next fallout game after that a small crack split between what we thought humanity was capable of in terms of corporate cooperation and what we would soon learn to be a sycophantic Hunger Games of infinite layering. Why was windows so hard to update why was apple computers immune to viruses why did backwards compatible consoles not forward compatible their software. But more than anything why was avowed in development while Elder Scrolls was in development while fables was in development. What the heck is a game engine anyway? Surely one of these three open world medieval fantasy games had a superior engine to the other. But by the time we were ready to process all of that destiny 2 was already releasing and we had concluded that there would never be a need for story and video games ever again as long as people were satisfied to compete for shiny outfits to tell each other that they were better at beating each other at whatever it was that they were doing. In the year that I decided that I could not write for video games was the year that video games decided that nobody needs to write for video games. And the working cast has been Pew Pew Pew Pew pewing at each other ever since wearing ever more gaudy examples of how they're better at being really intense.

It wasn't a Sony project for 7 years. Sony doesn't have much experience with live service games and they did not want to force the existing Playstation studios to stop making the type of games they are beloved for. This is why Sony went to a company which is specialised in creating new studios from the ground up to make live service games - incubation studios. The reason Sony didn't ask questions, is because they honestly do not know why people enjoy these types of games, too many misses during the PS3 era - I honestly do not either. Sony put their trust in the specialists and because Sony could see FireWalk Studios had a passionate staff which were hitting all their milestone goals, they bought the studio - because these are things Sony has always valued in their own studios all the way back from the PS1 days.

@@PixelBallerSony only bought them last year, so for the most part Firewalk was more or less of an independent studio since it's foundiny. I don't think that's true. They scaled Suicide Squad 's post launch way back and are currently trying to accelerate as much as possible the next Hogwarts Legacy.

Concord was the most expensive "It's just a prank, bro"-moment the gaming industry ever put out in the world.

“Deviants” are kinda the system OW2 promised us. Or a perk system.

Freudian slip? They were called "Variants." It was a great system. Don't know why they chose to focus on Teo's lame mags n' nades when almost every single Variant they cycled through was deeper and would've better explained the depth they were trying to convey. A lot of mistakes surrounding Concord, but the gameplay itself was fantastic, which just makes the shutdown hurt even more.

There was a recent report from someone who worked on the game that said there was a culture of toxic positivity at Firewalk, and that a lot of bad ideas were met with praise instead of being shot down. You're right, sometimes being harsh is being kind.

Sony DID NOT pull Cyberpunk 2077 off of their storefront because the game was buggy. They pulled it because CD Projekt went over their head and offered refunds for people who bought it on PSN. That pissed Sony off. That's why it was pulled.

So Sony has a 2/3 miss ratio, currently? Astrobot which everyone was anticipating, (they thought was a side project) while Concord and Fairgames were basically management pet projects that went horribly out of scope? Fairgames target audience sounds like the type of people who thought that they could beat the stock market by investing in AMC or Bed Bath & Beyond. I don't think Financial Involuntary Celibates have the kind of money that a more traditional whale would.

Sony didn't pull Cyberpunk for being too buggy, they pulled it because CDPR told people Sony would give refunds if they weren't happy with the game and Sony doesn't do refunds.
