L118A - Sniper Rifles - Modern Warfare 3 Review - #28

It took a while, but here's a sniper. I had fun with the L118A. Maybe you will too. Btw....how do you pronounce it? 1 then 18......118.....I honestly don't know.

CoD needs more big maps like back in CoD4, WaW and MW2. "Hardscoping aka "real" sniping" would be useful again.

Got my best game in MW3 with the L118A; shows that, if you can tailor your playstyle to its strength - powerful one-shot kill at long-range - and back it up with consistent back-up in the form of good secondary use you can reap its benefits. Right now I am running it with Marksman and a HBS; but the points Amish brought up are quite sound; it's just the attachments are very succinct in application. I'll experiment with this weapon thanks to Amish's advice. Great video once again; I'm educated!

Yes, recoil doesn't matter on bolt, pump, lever, or single shot weapons, but the rate of fire does count. The MSR DOES have a faster fire rate, if you don't believe me, record yourself or fire as fast as you can and see which gun has to reload first. The MSR cycles it's bolt faster, thus creating a faster cyclic rate. Another option is the power of google. Really helps.

Yeah same here. I've had so Many potential nukes/ assault juggernauts ruined by quickscopers and trickshotters that I feel dirty whenever I pick one up now. There IS one sniper rifle I like to use though. RSASS with thermal and silencer. The silencer reduces recoil and gives you stealth, while the thermal further reduces recoil and helps you find targets easier.

I agree with you. Still some people find a way to effectively play marksman, simply by picking up an RSAASS with acog and extended mags, or acog and speed. In others, less arcade games, playing with a sniper rifle feels really good =)

And here we have a wild Quickscoper, a rare species that usually appears on Call of Duty games. Quickscopers can get very agressive, especially when they meet people of a very similar species, the so called "Hardscopers". Quickscopers like to call Hardscopers "Noobs", because they think quickscoping takes more "skill" than hardscoping, a fact that hasn't been proven yet. If you ever meet a Quickscoper, it can be useful to stay away from discussions about Sniping to avoid trouble with them.

@xxragingAmishxx another point of not using assassin is that since you go with out a suppressor you will light up the map when firing, so it seems to be a waste of a perk in that instance.

Silencer does not reduce recoil! It just makes you silent, makes you have less range and makes your bullets feel more awesome

The sniping in Black Ops was fine, everyone just complained that they couldn't quickscope, so they couldn't snipe people from one inch away.They couldn't accept the fact that they had to use a sniper at range like they are supposed to be.

This rifle was my fav sniper due to the whole Britain pride, on Dom it provided me with a good overwatch and in TDM I fired and relocated. Oddly I prefered the ACOG scope with it due to it giving me more sight of targets couple that with a MP9 I get some good streaks.

idea for happy middle point. Snipers with high power like the barret and msr gain damage over range. so upclose they'll kill to the chest and far away theyll kill to the stomach,ECT. what ever the game lets them. Then make people aim down the scope like the acog so they get peripheral and it will be harder to quickscope because the crosshairs of the scope wont come up as fast. In exchange snipers shouldnt have sway on any sights and should be able to use RDS, HOLO, and Irons sights.

I say that your best Profiency is Focus, because you need to take awhile aiming to your opponent, so if he sees you and starts shooting you and you miss him, you're pretty much dead.

In mw2? It was only very slightly better than the intervention for the follow up shot and close range hip-fire capabilities. I'd say the snipers in general in that game were a bit overpowered, but the barrett was about the same as the intervention.

Actually the L96 was higher damage, OHK to the Humerus (upper arm) so it was down to whether one wanted raw power or more reasonable and serious sniping. I preferred L96 because it was WAY more fun as a troll gun!

Mission, ok. Outpost- Most of the spots are obvious and will get you killed, Downturn-Cant see how that will work. Fallen- You can argue for the spot in both buildings, but those are un-effective aswell.

About quickscoping...CoD4 and WaW had the most balanced system. MW2 was plagued with a million 720-derpshot-roflsnatcher-overshoulder-thruwalls-fakie-indieshotting 12yos, which was obviousy not good. Treyarch tried (!) to remove quickscoping and I find quickscoping in Black Ops certainly doable, but challenging. I have never played MW3, but from videos I've seen it's like a slightly more balanced MW2 quickscoping. Wish they'd balance the other end (shotguns) aswell...

I quickscope sometimes, but rarely because I find it more fun to just snipe and get alot of kills rather than running around with a K/D of 0.05

Two things. Your logic says that because it's a different action, that makes it unrelated to the weapons. Secondly, the AS50 is based on the AW50, which is part of the Arctic Warfare series of rifle and is still made by Accuracy International.

Kinda surprised no one has brought this up, but I'm not sure Amish completely thought through his reason for NOT using Marksman. Don't get me wrong, what he said is completely true and very valid, but there's a flip-side to his point. If an enemy is using Assassin Pro, his name won't appear above him when you look at him. This actually doesn't matter. If you're aiming at a person whose name DOESN'T appear, then you know that is an enemy Assassin and is fair game. Still love the review though ;)

I agree largely with most of what you said -I'd know I got this one gold and it took forever!- but I disagree with one comment. I think marksman is a must if you plan on any long range engagements. Most counter snipers have quickdraw as well and won't be difficult to see. Also do you ever not recommend the solo MP9!? Lastly I pronounce the name "L eleven eight A" which is probably incorrect but it's how i pronounced it from the start.

Oh I have absolutely NO problems with snipers in BO and BO2! I think they got sniper balance almost perfect in those games (it's still annoying because you feel really powerless getting killed by a one-shot weapon, but then again it's the same with shotguns) and while I personally don't use them I absolutely don't mind them ;) :)

Exactly the same except different scopes, the MSR fires at a faster cyclic rate than the L118A, and the MSR has lower recoil. I personally choose the MSR over the L118A, I think the L11 is terrible compared to the MSR. I hate when some guns make others obsolete. They should give the L11 higher multipliers to the body like the L86A1 in Black Ops did. It would redeem the weapon in my eyes. The Dragunov should have higher multipliers as well as it's early MW3 stats to balance out the killpower.

I refuse to use quickdraw. I have always despised the very notion of quickscoping and then mw3 goes and makes a perk called quickscope. I also have never been able to understand the view on sniping in Black Ops. I loved it. I can't help but feel like people think sniping is broken without being able to quickscope and that just makes my blood boil.

Snipers are meant to Snipe. Quickscoping is a fun, unintentional Feature in game. In Real Life you'll NEVER see a Person with a Sniper Barely looking into the Scope and firing.

Hey Raging Amish, you forgot one more thing that the L118A has that makes it horrible. Its stats when compared to the very similar MSR is a no brainer; the MSR wins. It has a faster bolt and better Swap Times. Sure the L118A is unlocked earlier, but that's all it has on the MSR.
