This song is about the last night of an indian girl with her parents before marriage. She will leave her father for going to her in laws and will never come back like a little angel. Traditionally and still practiced, indian girls leave their parents home and go to husband's house to become others families part and prosper that family. Indians are very much associated with this tradition emotionally, because we all have sisters and they leave us and go to other family. In india once a girl become a lady she has a lot responsibilities to take forward, rather our entire society depends of our moms, who's left their homes and made our house a home. In India a lady is like mother nature, who nurtures, feeds, protects, children, family, culture, traditions are carried by them, and society. Just the crisp of the song. Now just imagine the song once again. Thank you for reacting. Love u all

Absolutely my favourite beat in Indian Classical Music!! Most bollywood songs in Taal Rupak are unique and usually hits! Ashley is right. YOU ARE A MUSICAL GENIUS.

This is the best song for me to ever come out of coke studio. I get goose bumps every freakin time I hear this song. BTW Kirtidan Gadhvi is one of the most respected and AMAZING singers of Gujarat. Whenever he's performing in functions or marriages, people literally shower so much cash on him that there are times when he is literally sitting under PILES of cash and trying to get to his musical instrument under the cash to keep playing along! He has earned crores of rupees just by this appreciation cash that people shower on him. This is the respect that Kirtidan Gadhvi has in Gujarat. He's just amazing. Sachin - Jigar, the composers are also from Gujarat and the little girl is Sachin's daughter.

This makes me cry and I'm not even a dad. Knowing with context what girls go through, it always hits me hard. The lyrics remind you how precious girl child always are, how much a father loses when he has to say goodbye to his daughter, how much the society around us create a suffocating environment for women and girl child especially to grow through. It always baffles me why feminism is an issue to some. This song by all these legendary artists sets you in the realisation that letting the daughter fly away is a painful yet beautiful feeling that advocates for all the memories. In that subcontext it hits you.

Beautiful thoughts, you know sometimes I feel that I am one of those very lucky girl child who have received immense support from their father. I'm like very emotionally attached to papa! I remember my brother told me that he cried when going back home after dropping me to another city for studies, cried when he once scolded me very badly, and I cried while talking to him on my birthday over a call and he just listened to me, even my mother didn't notice my teary voice but he did! Thanks for accepting my request and reacting to this song. Of course the music is incredible but the feel of this song is an another level. To make some sense, let me explain... The whole song is a conversation between father and daughter, just before the wedding day. The little angel starts the song saying that "through out these years you have supported me, my dreams and what not. If I get a little scratch, you used to cry whole night and you took care of me. I also love you my dad from bottom of my heart and I will never leave you. " Then comes the father part who says, "however I love you, you have to fly away from me like a bird but before you fly, please be with me for tonight, hold my hand as if you will never leave me. If you go, not only me but even the trees will miss you and wait for you." Then comes the wedding day, where the daughter is no more a girl, but now is a grown up woman who is going to get marry and leave her father's house. This whole transition is beautifully synced by the portion of 'Shehnai', the long black instrument you were talking about. This instrument is mandatorily used during north indian weddings. The day of wedding, the woman is complaining to her father saying, "yes, I know I am your beloved daughter and you love me so much. But then what makes you to make me go away from you. Let me be with you some more time please, I may have to fly away soon. I will always be your beloved however far I be from you." And finally the chorus lifts up the song by blessing the daughter on her wedding with life time good fortune. Now coming to why it's always father and daughter and not mother-daughtef, actually mother-daugter relationship changes to friends after daughter attains a certain age, so as father-son relationship, and it has to he that way. What does not change is father-daugter and mother-son relation. They will always be in that character for each other through their life. Taking the example of a wedding, it is the only day where an Indian father is allowed to cry as he sends off her beloved daughter. She is the only one who can scold the father, who can talk to father even in his bad mood, when everyone in the family fails to talk to the father or demand something, she is the one who can talk without any fear. I hope in future you learn Indian languages and then you will be able to really feel the souls of such songs which will really make your reactions more powerful. Sorry for this long essay, but this song is very near to me and cry everytime i listen to this song, as I am also a daughter, and have similar relationship with my father. Thanks once again.

The beat is Rupak Taal, one my favourite beats. It's quite common in India. I think it's a beat that can convey deep emotions, makes you pause and feel the emotion. 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2 (flow, pause, pause. That's how I feel it 🙂) Rick, stop counting, stop thinking, close your eyes and let your body sway to the beat. 😊♥️

Hey guys. Love your reactions. I recently stumbled upon your channel & I am amazed by your content. Being a Gujarati, I am honored that you chose react to the song. I just want to give you a context about the song in case you missed it. Yes, this song is about a wishful thinking & unspoken conversation between father & daughter. No, mother can't be substituted in this song, because mothers & daughters talk & share their problems or pain all the time. The first person a child, especially in India, will go to with a problem or a complaint is the mother. The father may be the coolest dad ever, but it just is, especially in India, when it comes to parent-child relationship. This trend is changing in 21st century, but this song is a remix of a folk song that was being sung in the pre-independence era & hence the disparity between the line of thought/mentality of the song & the listeners. The song where the bird is being talked is an allegorical metaphor about a daughter getting married & leaving the Dad's house to go to her in-laws. Hence the talk about having one more day with her or visa-versa. The father is talking about how she has "flown away" after getting married & is externalizing his pain & desire to have the moments between them when she was young & used to play around the peepal tree, kind of the poem about playing around the mulberry bush, eating tamarind & just having that innocence that he would never see, so he is telling her, as an emissary, all complaints that the trees & he has. Since he can't show them outright being the father, "a man" as compared to the mother, is showing them through this song. Since, I don't know if you know this or not, daughter was traditionally referred to as "paraya dhan", with daughter-in-law being equated to Goddess Laxmi (Goddess of wealth & good fortune) in Indian culture, it meant that she was Laxmi of her in-laws & the father had donated his good fortune & wealth to the family that she was marrying into, hence the term "Kanyadaan" -- kind of like giving away of the daughter by the father in Christian weddings, she is seen complaining to the dad, in the later part of the song, that why are you being so distant -- I'll still be your daughter even if I have to "fly away at dusk" & asks the father for those cherished moments that they used to have once more. I understand that this explanation or the song, if understood completely with the correct context, may come off as traditionalist or even sexist/misogynistic to some people. But song is about the pain of unsaid things by father & hope of saying them to his daughter who has been waiting a long time her those things. I know I have essentially written an essay in the comment section but there was no other way of portraying the song or its feelings in a line or two. I think Rick will agree with me. Anyways, if anybody got offended by the song or the explanation, my apologies

The beat cycle is an classical Indian beat cycle or "taala", called "Rupak". It's a 7 beat cycle, divided 3,2,2. So it goes 1-2-3,1-2,1-2. Indian classical music has beat cycles, or taalas, ranging from 3 beat cycles to 108 beat cycles. So it's easier to an Indian ear than a Western one.

Wow! Thanks Rick and Korbin for valuing back to back coke studio requests, first Madaari and now Laadki. Next on the coke studio list, as mentioned before, should be Moner Manush, Khwajababa, Aligiri Nandini, Rangabati. A fan from Texas.

I lost my father when I was 9. This song is very difficult for me to listen to because every time I listen I feel that he's saying goodbye to me and wishing me all the best. I see my younger self in that little girl. All the sadness comes rushing! That's how powerful this song is.

I am teared up listening to this song....Coz it makes me miss my Dad as m living away from my father in a diff city and I will soon get married...This song basically talks abt an Indian tradition called "Vidayi/Bidayi" which means farewell...it's the last ceremony in a marriage where Father gives a farewell to his daughter as she will be becoming part of a new family and leave her parents house...this is very emotional day for the Gal's family...and such songs touch all those emotions of the Indian father and daughters and makes them cry most of the time... Indian marriage traditions are very very beautiful...

@Rick: Completely agree with your observation about 7-beats. The Indian semi-classical domain is filled with many compositions in 7-beats. Allow me to suggest some popular songs in 7-beats: - Aap ki nazaro ne samjha (Originally sung by Lata Mangeshkar. You have already listened to Shreya's rendition at Berklee.) - Piya toh se naina laage re - Tere mere milan ki ye raina - Teri bindiya re - Kisi raah mein kisi mod par - Megha chhaaye aadhi raat - Ishaaron ishaaron mein dil - Aaj jaane ki zid na karo

The thing that was more important than the music was the lyrics in the song...whils the girl and woman part are in hindi and the man part was in gujarati, who is a folk singer and one of the most revered one in the state of Gujarat...and the song is about the relationship between a dad and daughter where the daughter's weeding is about to take place where after the wedding daughter traditionally leaves her father's house and moves to her husband place( though the concept is same today, but in earlier times after weddings daughter's would very rarely meet their father and by using the word rare i mean it very seriously but as the time went by and technology came up and the means of transportation got better and people started to get little bit more open that now a father and daughter do meet a lot more than it used to happen in earlier times) even after the change in time it is like where the daughter grew up and the type of bond a daughter always has with her father all her lifetime, she has to leave that place and that father and those people to move onto a new place which is totally unknown to her and the pain of a father to let go off his dear daughter whom he not only loved but also grew up in front of him after all these years. Aavjo(bye in Gujarati)

Guys, it's always entertaining to see how western music with its limitations trying to gauge the depth of Indian music. It's like you are using a thread to measure a mile. So, forget the complexities that you cannot comprehend and enjoy the music. The more you dig in, the more deep you go..

“Shehnai” is a very emotion invoking instrument. It is always part of marriage musical band in South. It is a leading instrument when the bride takes leave from her family leaving everyone teary eyed. This song is in the same context and hence the instrument makes an appearance I think.

The instrument is a traditional Indian Shehnai an almost essential instrument used for wedding songs/ music in India. It’s a girls getting married and asking her dad why he is letting her go to her in laws (as per Indian tradition ) when she is her dads darling little girl still. She will cease to be a little girl now when she returns next as a married woman. It’s a very emotional farewell song from the bride to her parents whom she is leaving behind as she starts a new life as a wife and daughter in law.

The beat cycle you mentioned is of seven beats a cycle and in Indian classical music rhythms are named as per their cycle and number of beats called "Taal". This Taal is called "Rupak" which is a seven beat cycle. Many Rajasthani folk songs are based on this taal.
