In the beginning, when Phool suggested to Manju Mai that she should have sweets, Manju Mai replied that she had nothing to celebrate in her life. However, by the end, when she received the news that Phool had reached home safely, she ate sweets, symbolizing that now she had a reason to celebrate.

PHOOL (flower) PUSHPA (flower) Deepak's village: SOORAJMUKHI (A flower) The bus Deepak takes to his village: PUSHPA TRAVELS (Flower) Flower: A symbol of tenderness, innocence or purity. This symbol of innocence and purity is spread throughout the village life in the film. Phool's husband: DEEPAK (lamp/ a source of light) Pushpa's husband: PRADEEP (lamp/ a source of light) A lamp can either guide you through darkness or it can burn you. Deepak is a guiding force, a ray of hope for both Phool and Pushpa in their darkest times. While Pradeep burnt his ex-wife to death. (One lamp showed the way, the other burnt down a life) Pushpa's real name: JAYA (victorious) Jaya is a rebel at heart. But, because of the social and gender expectations, she is forced to be soft, and tender like a flower ( PUSHPA). Jaya especially mentions the dish made of lotus stems. She consumes a dish made of flowers ( Kamal Kakdi). She symbolically consumes her tenderness her softness, and the flowery side of her character. She rebels against the social norms and expectations such as taking her husband's name and running away from her marriage to pursue her education. She strives to be VICTORIOUS. Name of the police officer: SHYAM MANOHAR SHYAM: Dark, Black ( one name of Lord Krishna) MANOHAR: Lovable, one who wins our heart (another name of Lord Krishna) In the first part of the movie Shyam Manohar is shown as corrupt, and a greedy officer. Showing the dark side of his character. Thus, he is SHYAM. In the second half, Shyam Manohar wins our hearts by taking the right step by saving Jaya from her husband. Thus, he becomes MANOHAR. One of the most beautiful and simple movies made which encapsulates the “real india” . This movie is a gamechanger i went to my village few days back and few orthodox old people of village were in tears with this movie and they said “ ab hum bhi apni bitiya ko aage kuch krne ko bolenge“ - (now we will also tell our daughter to pursue something “ ) Lovely movie . The police didn't know Phool's station as they didn't report police. Hence, even though he was seeking gold, he wasn't inhumane. Great reaction guys. 🫡

21:02 that pouch is called khoicha ,in bihari culture it's given to daughter when she leaves for her husband's house ,that pouch contains grain and symbolises that the daughter is an Annapurna(one who never lets other face shortage of food) and that she never faces any shortage of grains/food in her new house. This is the reason in southern bihar during Durga /Kali Puja women give khoicha to these goddess as they are worshipped as daughter.

Manju Mai ( "the saint" in this movie) was also in Andhadhun, the lady who kidnaps the blind pianist with the Tuk Tuk driver.. She has amazing range and one of the movie she stars in won big in Cannes this year.

Nothing over the top but have that impact that give you every emotion... Also the movie which can be watched by whole family together... Now a days its hard to find something like 'laapta ladies' and 'panchayat', so whole family can watch and enjoy together... Acting top notch, actors are so new and felt real and genuine, Also music is the best...

Just watched "Laapataa ladies". The movie is Simply Superb. The scene between Deepak & Phool in the farm just took it to the next level. He is so vulnerable in that scene and yet he goes ahead with it. The Overall narrative & storyline is so good. This movie is much much better than the big budget South Indian movies and their remakes which have no sense in them - just big loud music, over the top action & tons of over acting. No nuance at all. It is high time that audiences start valuing & supporting quality cinema over big budget loud movies with over the top acting.

Another small-budget feel-good Hindi movie with a unique story and a fabulous cast is 'Nil battey sannata'. It is the story of a poor housemaid Mom's big dreams for a reckless, carefree teenage daughter. I think you would love it, and I have not seen any other channel react to it. Atb.

Josh - since you both discussed how happy you are for having seen Panchayat and Lapata Ladies coz both got you to understand the Indian side which is not easily seen..i highly recommend a Malayalam series "Periloor Premier League". It's on Disney and will give you a wonderful view of grass root politics. This story is based in Kerala and is not only very engaging but a fun watch with great actors.
