I heard someone say “you don’t draw in your shadows.” I didn’t really understand exactly what they were talking about. I had to back up your video at the end a couple times, bcuz hearing you say “ if you need a line to define your subject from your background it’s a pretty good indicator that you need to work on your values.” That was an Ahh Ha moment!!!! There’s someone I’d watch who’d draw out the shadows and then layer endlessly to blend them. It confused me bit bcuz I was telling myself “maybe that’s coloring the shadows?” Idk, but after hearing you, I’m going with my guy feeling that that outlining and coloring in shadows isn’t the way to.

just a quick critique...it is easier to airbrush holding the brush with two hands and paint standing up with the area that you are working on should be roughly just below the shoulder area. Also, pull your arms as close to your body as possible, this creates more stability. I like to say - paint as if you have arms like a Rex dinosaur lol! Sitting and painting one-handed above your eye level will result in a very rough and shakey look. This is because your hands naturally shake and you are not putting medium to canvas like a regular paint brush. When painting you are basically making long and short dagger style strokes, most people will confuse this and think you are drawing like you would with a pencil. Overall, great work though btw. Love your tutorials!

Thanks for the helpful video! Your final suggestion is a really good one: start in black and white! Use black ink and go to town, make cones, spheres, cubes, with convincing shadows. That's all I did for months when I started learning. It's a great way to gain control.

Just a tip - DO NOT run the needle backwards through the front. Always go through the back of the gun with the tapered edge going in. The back of the needle has little notches that can affect the gasket and break the seal. Bryant from Grex told me this yesterday when I was going over some trouble shooting with my airbrush. A couple of times won't hurt it but do not make it a normal thing when you clean it.

Interesting. The problem with running the needle from the back to the front is it's really easy to bend the tip of the needle. Seems like you just have to decide which is the lesser of two evils? I've always run my needles from front to back and never had issue.

I don't like to work in pastels because of how they feel on my hands. The only ones I really like are the pan pastels. Check out Jason Morgan here on youtube, he does a lot of great pastel videos :D

My husband got me an airbrush last Christmas and I have not used it because I read that the paint can get on everything. Can you tell me just how bad it actually is? I have a small studio so what I have painted is stored in the same space. I don't want overspray to ruin any thing. Thank you for all of your videos!

That air compressor is super tiny, even smaller than my last one that I thought was pretty small.
