Lake of Fire Tormented Tested or Refined?

The traditional Church and many Bible translations have taught most of mankind will be tormented forever in the Lake of Fire also called Hell by most theologians. Is this true? NO! Learn the truth about basanos, the Greek word behind our English torment.

As our other sister Ashley mentioned, Seitan as a personification simply doesn't exist. We are the evil ones, yet our egocentric consciousness (that is formed out of an attitude of fear) likes to blame-shift. Even these perverted scriptures done by the lying scribes, teaches us that out of mankind's hearts come evil (unloving) (fearful) thoughts. So if little kids can have fear with monsters under the bed so can "grown ups" have imaginations based on fear. John Price the Word is Jesus. He told us to call no man our teacher because he is our teacher. We are suppose to have a relationship with him. We are to ask God for wisdom. We are to be taught by the Spirit not man. God did preserve his Word in his Son. The Bible is a useful tool that points us to God and Jesus. Christians have been brainwashed to believe they cannot interpret the Bible without scholars and pastors/priests. The prophet Jeremiah spoke how the Hebrew scribes handled the law falsely. I used the texus receptus (green's interlinear parallel bible) & the strong's exhaustive concordance & I do check the modern greek to English dictionary sometimes. in all the other parts of New Testament Greek text that I've found for the word for 'fire' in English, it's the greek word 'pur', which when I studied that exact spelling found it to mean 'fire'. in the Revelation term 'lake of fire' in the greek, the particular word for 'fire' in that original text prase, I found to have a different spelling which is 'puros'. so I did a literal word study of that exact spelling, and found it to be 'smelter'. isn't that Beautiful, bro? Here is a question about the lake of fire! How can it be literal when the Scriptures say that death and the grave are hurled into it? Can you literally burn death or the grave? Jesus paid the penalty for sin. He did suffer greatly, but not for eternity! So how can eternal suffering be a just penalty for sin? I love and embraces what Gary teaches. There are some things I am still wondering about though. The Lake of Fire, according to Revelation, seems to be a place where all evil is destroyed. I have often wondered if, when it says, "This is the second death," it means that all who are not in the Book of Life will be destroyed. All evil, all evil souls that refuse God to the end. The first death being phisical death, the second death being the death of the soul, or what some would call annihilation on an individual. Now, if in fact that is the correct interpretation of the passage, that would not mean necessarily that ANY persons would end up there. If universal salvation is true, perhaps that would be the destiny of those not finally saved, but in reality perhaps as Gary says, Jesus is completely victorious and NO ONE will end in the Lake of Fire. I also find it interesting that at the resurrection, Hell itself is thrown in the Lake of Fire. Does that not perhaps mean the annihilation of Hell itself? I would like to study all this more.

Mary Cage the real meaning of the lake of fire: The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” - Revelation 20:10. Modern bible translations depict the lake of fire as the most terrifying place imaginable. A realm of eternal torture in fire. The problem is the Apostle John is not talking about a lake at all but a tiny pool of molten metal called a crucible. For most Christians this will be the first time you understand these passages. The actual word picture used in these passages has been completely lost in translation simply because the translators are not metallurgists. Are you curious? Keep reading. The lake of fire with sulfur is the image of an ancient gold refining process. Literally a crucible of molten gold with sulfur added to eliminate impurities. This understanding is confirmed in Revelation 3:18. “I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire.” Christ himself uses the image of gold refined in fire when rebuking the church in Laodicea for being neither hot nor cold. The lake of fire was never meant to be understood as an actual lake or realm of punishment in literal fire. Rather the lake of fire is merely a picture of the gold refiner’s crucible, the process of purifying gold. Understanding the imagery of the Greek words behind these passages brings the text to life. The Greek word translated as “lake” literally means a pond, large or small, depending on the context. This is the Greek word limné: “Probably from limen (through the idea of nearness of shore); a pond (large or small) -- lake.” (Strong’s Concordance). Thus the lake of fire is the image of a tiny pond of molten metal as we would see in a refiner’s crucible not a lake filled with fire. Only a psychopath would torture people in literal fire for all eternity. Most certainly God, who is love, would not do such a thing nor would it come to his mind. Sulfur, also known as brimstone, has been used in the refining of metals since ancient times. Gold refining by sulphurization is even still done by the United States mint (a). Sulfur is highly reactive and by adding small amounts of sulfur to the crucible unwanted metals are transformed into suphides. This reaction will even flash and smoke. The gold itself is resistant to this reaction and will settle to bottom in a more purified form since the other metals, now trapped as suphides, float to the top. The ancients would not have understand the chemistry behind this process but they most certainly understood the results. Pure gold! But what about being tormented in fire? The Greek word translated as “torment” is actually the word “touchstone”. This is the Greek word “basanizó”. “Cognate: 931 básanos - originally, a black, silicon-based stone used as "a touchstone" to test the purity of precious metals (like silver and gold).” - (Strong’s Concordance). The Greek word básanos is where we get the word “basalt”, a type of rock that was used for making touchstones in the ancient world. The use of the word touchstone absolutely confirms the lake of fire is a gold refiner’s crucible. A touchstone was used in ancient times to check the purity of gold and is still used by jewelers today. By the striking a line of gold on the touchstone the color produced reveals the level of purity. That is the meaning of the word “tormented” in modern bibles, a process for testing the purity of gold. An additional test for assaying the gold can be performed as well. By applying an acid to the line of gold on the touchstone the non-gold elements will react and even smoke (c.). The more impurities on the stone the more it will smoke. Therefore the lake of fire is not a realm of eternal torture in fire. The lake of fire is a metaphor of gold refining and not an actual place or lake at all. The Apostle John is using the abstract idea of a person being refined, then tested and refined again, with each cycle resulting in higher grades of purity. This is not an endless process. The Greek words translated as “forever and ever” are more literally translated as “in the ages of ages”. The words used in the passage are cognate adjectives from the Greek word aión. Short Definition: an age, a cycle of time. (Strong’s Greek: 165). Modern bible translations have also dropped the preposition “in” and inserted “forever”. The Greek preposition is “eis,” pronounced “ice”. Strong’s 1519 Definition: into, in, unto, to, upon, towards, for, among. Literally this means “in” or moving into. (Strong’s Greek: 1519). Therefore if accurately translated we should read, “in the ages of ages.” This applies to all the passages in Revelation translated as “forever and ever.” For example, “They will reign forever and ever” is incorrect. It should read “They will reign in the ages of ages”. Getting the preposition correct is critical to understanding these passages. It is the difference between the idea of merely being somewhere and a duration of time. In other words the passage is telling when this will happen not specifically how long it will take. Just like WWII occurred in the 20th century but did not last through it. Evil doers will be tested and refined by God for as long as it takes, in the ages of ages. This is to return them to the pure state in which they were originally created to be. Early church fathers called this “the apokatastasis”, the restoration of all people and all things. This passage should be translated: “The devil who deceived them was thrown into the refiner's crucible with sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tested for purity day and night in the ages of ages.” - Revelation 20:10. Therefore they will be tested and refined in the ages of ages and not literally through all eternity. Although not a torture chamber in fire this passage it is still a picture of justice. Some have speculated that true justice would be to experience the pain and suffering we caused for others through the eyes of our victims. That if we were careless and selfish and lived without mercy toward others we also will not receive mercy in equal measure. As believers we are taught to be merciful because mercy triumphs over judgment “So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom. For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” - (James 2:12-13). So from now on when you read about the “lake of fire” remember the tiny crucible used for refining gold. That is the imagery the Apostle John is actually using, the so-called lake of fire. Then one has to ask themselves! If hell is real which its not then- Why Did The God-fearing Man Job Want To Go To Hell?

Hello Mr . Tent Maker, I have been watching your videos and believe what you teach in regards to hell. I am a Christian and attend a Church Of Christ . I want to share the gospel but have a problem with the modern concept of hell. Most people will ask you about hell and my learned response would be that it is an everlasting punishment in an everlasting fire. I think this concept repels not saves.

Gary, I take it literally, and I *still* find no warrant for Eternal Conscious Torment in Isaiah 66. This is an Earth scene with carcasses, not Gehenna or the Lake of Fire. Caveat: I take "their worm shall not die" and "neither shall their fire be quenched" to mean "... until they have finished their work of consuming." So maybe I don't take it in a wooden literalistic sense. This is consumption language. But what happens to these people in the afterlife isn't spoken of here.

Jesus Teaches Universal Reconcloation in Mathew 19 & Luke 18. Peter actually gets upset, at first, about it, but clearly states this fact in his epistle. God is the Saviour of all men, especially those that believe. In Exekiel 16 God tells us he plans to restore Sodom, there' plenty of verses that indicate this. The issue is the Latin understanding of Aeternalus vs the Greek understanding of Aeon. The early Greek church was universalist, but Latin Theologians weren't. I believe it is for refinement, haven't watched yet.

Not only can we take the Bible literally but we must take the Bible literally. This is the only way to determine what God really is trying to communicate to us. One reason we should take the Bible literally is because the Lord Jesus Christ took it literally. Whenever the Lord Jesus quoted from the Old Testament it was always clear that He believed in its literal interpretation. The Bible is Gods Word to us and he meant it to be believed literally and completely.

You're right that the scriptures do no where mention anything about eternal torment. But you would also do well to realize that they also do not clearly reveal that there is no such thing. It is something which is now a mystery that we might fear before Them. In stating so authoritatively that there is no eternal torment I think you are jumping the gun. I hope and suspect that you will prove to have been correct about this ineffably important issue, but how can you prophesy so boldly when you haven't gotten it from the Lord? Also, to imagine that there will be no more night and day throughout eternity sounds whacked to me. It would make eternity inferior by far in that respect to our current reality. The new Earth will have a new sun and the new universe will have more than a few other stars. Even though, needless to say, I'm very familiar with Revelation 21:23.

The "last days" in the New Testament have already happened by 70AD. John said in his day it was the "last hour". The gospel went to the "ends of the world" 2,000 years ago. "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come." Read Revelation 12. There are two time periods mentioned. Yes, there was a sort of “last days” or tribulation that happened after Jesus ascended. That time period lasted 1260 days. Then later in the chapter the church is nourished for a time, times and half a time. Another figure of speech. This time period separates that tribulation from the very last one. All prophecies are dual. Prophets were required to predict something that would happen soon to validate the rest of the prophecy. This is a test God told the Israelites to use to determine if a prophet was sent from God.

Guys. It’s not rocket science. The lake of fire is not an eternal tormenting pool of eternal punishment. It’s mentioned in Revelation 19 and 20. In Revelation 19 it is also known as the lake of burning sulfur. Revelation 19:20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. If you are sharp you will realise it actually is a reference to some Old Testament text. Genesis 19:24 Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah -from the LORD out of the heavens. Deuteronomy 29:23 The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur-nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger. Luke 17:29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. Thus you would see it’s a reference to Sodom. Now. Genesis 14:2-3 these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea Valley ). Notice Sodom is located at the Dead Sea? If you do a bit of research the Dead Sea was actually a lake filled with sulfur before. Hence. The Lake of Fire is clearly a reference to Sodom. Now here’s the tricky part. Go back to Revelation. What did the author say about Sodom? Revelation 11:8 Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city -which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt-where also their Lord was crucified. It’s used as a figurative speech about the city the Lord was crucified. Now. Do you see it? Sodom there is Jerusalem. This is what the Lake of Fire is. Jerusalem in AD70. Get a life. The Lake of Fire is in your past.

Leviticus 16:17 No one is to be in the tent of meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he comes out, having made atonement for himself, his household and the whole community of Israel. The smoke and the incense here represent the prayers of the saints. Now many people then argue that these are the saints through out Christianity. This is not true. It’s actually about these people. Revelation 6:9-11 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. Now let me show you something. Matthew 23:31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Now look at this. Matthew 23:35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. Now look at this. Matthew 23:34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, More people dying together with the ones crying out to God for revenge. Now look at this. Revelation 8:5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. This is God answering these people’s prayers. This is also what Jesus prophesied. Matthew 23:36-38 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation. “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. This desolate house is the temple. That’s why in the next chapter he said this. Matthew 24:2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” So when you read about the 7 trumpets and it’s bowls, it’s about God punishing Jerusalem for her sins for killing the prophets. Not yours. By the way this is what it means here. Hebrews 9:15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance -now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. The sins of the first covenant was referring to the sins of Jerusalem. Jesus came to call people out of old Jerusalem onto the New Jerusalem. Hebrews 13:12-13 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood. Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. This same call is echoed here. Revelation 18:4 Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “‘Come out of her, my people,’ so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; Babylon here is figuratively Jerusalem. As such we learn something here. God was never angry at you. This was about the religious leaders of Jerusalem in that generation. The wrath of God was against the Jews who killed Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 2:15-16 who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last. So. God was never angry with you. You were born in Christ. You never tresspassed against the Law. That’s how you read the Bible. That’s how it sets you free.

The flood story is said by some to be symbolic of baptism, the beginning of a washing away or cleansing process, transformation, and eventual renewal. Renewal is a recurring theme throughout the Bible. Job is a good example, he lost it all but persevered and prevailed in the end. The waters, as with fire, are symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The mountaintop represents the highest elevation of spiritual progression, also known as the heavenly realm. It is often used as the place or setting where holy men go alone to commune with God and can be found. It is a serene place of peace and tranquility, stillness, far from the ways and distractions of the world, you see. Many believe Heaven and Hell are merely states of the mind or places of consciousness, peace of mind vs. torment or happiness vs. misery. The earth represents the egotistical carnal mind or nature of man, the lower spiritual elevation far removed from the heavenly realm that is the mountaintop. Another way to look at it is two of every animal inside of a vessel steered by a prophet and his family is an allegory to the base, animalistic inclinations within the male and female human being: a vessel that houses both the physical and the spiritual. Noah and his tribe represent the latter. We are spiritual beings clothed in animal skins and are the vessels that house many types of beastly things. The spirit realm is the intangible thought world in our heads, the mind, like a ghost in the machine, and is where all of our experiences occur and are stored and all of our good vs. evil powers reside. Human psychology is mostly what the Bible stories are about and the human condition, in general. Physiology comes into play as well as the mind and body are intimately connected with both having profound effects on the other and also dependence. Psyche is Greek for the soul, mind, or spirit. The condition of one's psyche determines many outcomes and many are corrupted or utterly destroyed. Our mentality matters in other words. Proper mind management is key. We are the gatekeepers and caretakers of our domain. Like a well-maintained garden, our minds can produce good fruits abundantly. The Garden of Eden is akin to Heaven on Earth. Eden is said to mean delight or paradise. Our minds are in need of continual upkeep and weed free is best. Seeds are thoughts and good and bad seeds alike will take root when nurtured. Where we dwell spiritually depends on what we dwell on. The point is to create Heaven on Earth for ourselves and others and it all starts or ends with our minds. The Devil is inside and in need of restraint. He is our dark side and adversary that tends to cause a lot of trouble and convinces us of doing things that we know are wrong. He is that other inner voice that is subtle, cunning, and crafty. We easily justify our choice and talk ourselves into whatever it is that we strongly desired in the first place. Eve beguiled or wholly seduced herself, you see. Christ lives in you and the Bible says the Kingdom of God is within you. Many are waiting for Him to come busting through the clouds in the sky someday, but he is and has been here in our hearts waiting to be resurrected. Rapture is yet another state of mind, a glorious one. A divine state of mind that is content and causes one's entire outlook on the world and their life to change for the better. Rapture is a feeling of emotional ecstasy so magical it's almost as if you've been transported to some other world. Our mental states are carried forward into manifestation and become our experience in daily living.

I have to admit I wish this teaching could be correct but at the same time if it is , how much more of the bible could be translated wrong ? However, if all of this is to be taken literally and if the translations are correct then I also have to admit that I have to understand the hesitancy of those people who may be find it terrifying to serve a God that has a place for souls to be tormented and to be literally burned forever and ever with absolutely no hope for an end even after a billion years of being burned like charcoal in the lake of fire .

just an opinion perhaps, but bickering isn't going to do anything good. None of us are able to judge, but we can pray for discernment. I suggest whenever we come upon something with which we disagree, we take the opportunity to examine it more carefully in our own heart rather than attacking another. To be very basic, though the wicked one has sown tares among the good crop, Satan is not the Creator of anything/one. He sows in our hearts and it is not for us to decide who is a tare or not.

I've been studying and reading about this for a couple of months now. I've been looking intoJewish writings, Greek writings, any historical document I could find. I've been a Christian my whole life, and it's difficult to say this, but because Christianity is so close to the Egyptian religion, and the purpose it had back then, and from what I can pick up, it's hard to believe I'm even saying this, but I think that this planet is as the new age people say. It's a source for energy. I think that's why they're eliminating people. It's not working out very well, so they're trying to upgrade. I don't believe that there are planets are aliens, but there are some very smart people in control here. I don't know if you can get out of it. If it means anything, the Jewish folk tend to think that that bright light you see when you die is a birth canal. It's you coming back. The best guess I've got, is don't go that way. Ask you what is the other way? I don't know. In every scenario I can find, memories are erased. That's Christianity and the number of others. The gods or God that we think loves us, is the one who keeps this whole thing going. This is a factory. And we are the workers. I can't believe I just said that, but that is how it looks. The only good news I can see is it appears to be falling apart. I don't know about you, but I've had some mighty weird experiences in the last decade or two, that really can't be explained other than the mechanism doesn't seem to be working very well anymore. Maybe there's an out that way.

Awwww the lake of fire isn't a literal firey lake. Did you notice in Revelation 21:14 that death and the grave are hurled into the lake of fire? Think for a moment, can you throw death, can you hurl the grave? Can you burn either death or the grave? The lake of fire "means".... the second death or destruction. Chapter 21 of Revelation says that death will be no more....no need for the grave then. So symbolically they are done away with, fire is a fitting symbol of eternal destruction. Anyway, the dead are unconscious, Ecclesiastes 9:5,10, and the soul dies, Ezekiel 18:4,20. They can utilize your chest wide open or do a lobotomy and if your unconscious, you don't feel a thing. 😊 Remember, the Devil has been lying from the beginning. God cannot lie, Titus 1:2; Psalms 83:18.

And also ppl that believe they are saved now are in a way judging themselves a little to soon and that's why we're not judges , but God only. 1 Corinthians 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall every man have praise of God So the ppl that are already condemning and judging others to hell may be judged as unrighteous themselves because sometimes we think our heart is in the right place , but the Bible says our hearts are deceitful too. The seemingly unrighteous to us may be righteous in the eyes of God which is the only one that is able to read the heart.

Yes, Jesus did say the way is narrow that leads to live; it' as narrow as a single person, Jesus, the Savior of the whole world. And it doesn't seem you are on that narrow path yet for you seem to love to condemn people to eternal damnation. You use scriptures to judge and condemn others but do not apply those same harsh Scriptures Jesus spoke to yourself. For example, have you plucked out your right eyes yet or cut off your right hand? For sure a quick survey of your life will reveal lust and covetousness. But you have no intention of cutting off your hand and plucking out your eye, do you Peter. Which brings greater to God the Father? That Jesus saves all He came to save that is all mankind or that He loses most of those He died for? You see it becomes clear who is the false teacher. Yes, few find the way, but Jesus seeks AND finds the one lost sheep and doesn't give up til HE FINDS IT. Faith comes for Jesus not from man. Salvation is the Lord's, not man's will but God's will. Jesus is the actual savior of the world whether you believe him or not. But obviously, you don't; that makes you a servant of the devil giving greater glory to a devil who wins almost all of mankind while Jesus scarcely saves anyone. I wouldn't say hell or the lake of fire tormented or scared me, I maybe wrong but I actually think it helped me respect and fear God more. The only problem I see in this belief is your scared of messing up on God. Also it caused me to despise the world seeing them all as idiots who don't respect God nor fear the judgment of God. Now I think I can be a bit more compassionate toward those who don't know the Lord.
