I'm an anomaly, but I love the game at 3. There are only 2 nobles, so many of the castles will be gone by round 2, or even round 1 if that bonus is taken in France. Because many of the castles are not available in the early game (they require strength 3 or 4 knights), and the nobles in the early castles go quick, the important castles shift in the game, and there is plenty of competition.

Lancaster is my favorite game. Overall, you did a great job of providing an overview of the game and reviewing its pros/cons. For completeness, you should have shown a little bit about the castle location and its associated actions. Well done as usual.

Hey Paul great review of one of the best eurogames of all time. I agree that the 2 player rules are kind of shite though. Probably better to have certain cities "closed" each round and vary this through the game. Tighten it up a bit.

I agree with you about player count. I play a lot of 2 - 3 players, and found this game not memorable and got rid of it.

Thanks for the review. Why do you spend so much time on reviewing the 2-3p game? This is clearly not a game for 2-3 players so that's mostly irrelevant, they only put that on the box for commercial reasons

Well it's a good mention for the same commercial reasons. People can decide better whether to buy it. I am happy new owner of the old version with New Laws expansion, bought it mostly for 4 player games. And I understand that I will be rather playing Troyes with 2 or 3 players, which I absolutely like at that player counts.

@@GamingRulesVideos TBH I find the English language rulebook rather poor--it's weirdly organized and has some key ambiguities that I had to resolve with reference to BGG. (For instance--just try to find the rule that says you can't acquire two noble tiles from the same county. It's buried in there.... SOMEWHERE.)
