Join us as we change the oil in our new Land Rover Defender P300. We manage to do this without removing the underbody protection using a drinking water bottle !

I have two defenders. I've been following the Topix instructions and using the vacuum method being that it's designed for that. I have confirmed more than once that it pretty much gets all of the oil out as long as you do it with the engine at full operating temperature. I've pulled the plug after vacuuming and there may be a ounce or so at the most left if that. So after checking I'm not that worried about it. I vacuum it into a measuring container that has liters/quarts marks to confirm each time I'm getting it all. It's fast,clean, easy. I may pull the plug every so often to confirm but I will be vacuuming out the oil first and then pulling the plug to minimize the mess. You might consider vacuuming first then pulling the plug to confirm if you really feel the need to pull the plug every time. Then again, I'm not a professional. It's just my own personal experience. It should also be noted that when the filter is removed, the oil within the housing is allowed to drain into the sump, so there will be some dirty oil from that in the sump if the filter is removed after ending the drain sequence. If the sump plug is still open, then there better be a can underneath when the filter is removed.

At my next oil change, I will be doing the “sucky” method on my L322. I’m excited to give it a try. The last oil change, I removed the cover at the bottom and pulled the plug. What a mess I made! Thanks for the video!

Hi Simon, great try out with your bottle ! , I may that do the next time ( with all closed above) We discussed this on landroverforums , the oil drain plug of yours and mine is non magnetic. Another member showed his magnetic drain plug ( LR154091 ), so obviously 2 types of oil drain plugs are used, you only can determine by pulling out. So for all future P300 DIY oil changes be sure to have 1 in stock. I put the 7 liters in , no problem.

Hi Simon, I enjoy watching your videos & find them very informative. With regard to the oil change on your Defender, you may want to consider replacing the sump plug with a Fumoto oil drain valve. Once installed it works like a tap. You can even install a rubber tube on the valve to direct the oil into a recepticle cleanly without any drips or mess. Hope that helps with the next oil change. I've always used Fumoto valves on my vehicles. Super easy and clean oil change as you noted. Question, what Fumoto model did you use on your P300 engine?

Hi Simon. FYIO the first service on a Land Rover Defender D250 6 cylinder 2020 in Australia is 33,000 klms. Mines gone in today at 28,000 klms. Just out of interest, I recently arrived back in Perth from a trip to Darwin, drove the Gibb River Road and the LR did not miss a beat, 10,000 klms all up. Brilliant vehicle to drive.

David, I have the same D250 6 cylinder motor and I queried the Landrover dealership at the Gold Coast about the 30,000 Km first service as I had done over 20,000 already. The guy told me that the oil is basically monitored by the engines computers and I will get a notification on the infotainment system when service is due and it should be around the 30,000 km mark. You are correct that they are brilliant vehicles to drive on and off road.

@@sklyjd3051 Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of that I only had it serviced because we'd done a few river crossings and at 28,000 klms I figured it was close enough. It will be interesting to see when the next service notification comes through.

@@AddyAshton I agree, will it stuff up the computer generated service programme. I have now done about 29,000 km and according to infotainment system I am not due until 33,500 km or 2 years and whatever comes first. However I decided to book it in next week with an independent mechanic solely for an oil and filter change as I have done some off roading like yourself through water and dust and the oil is jet black. The local dealer could not do a service until next month and I need to do some high Kms before then. I think I need to find out if Landrover needs to do anything critical like check the brakes or reset computers at the 33,500 Km mark.

I'd be interested to hear whether the brakes etc need to be checked, my understanding is it's just an oil and filter service. I'm going to make some enquiries regarding the infotainment displaying services and whether it changes anything by having an early service.

Simon…too many memories of Saturday mornings, too many stuck filters, crushed sump plug washers, an arm coated in oil and once I had a new filter burst open and dump 5 litres of GTX all over the garage forecourt…it was there for 18 months despite my best efforts with Gunk and Fairy Liquid! I’m running a bit late on films as I have had a distraction with a sore ankle which is still a nuisance…not an accident but just a fluke blister that is just on the side wear a shoe rubs…argh!🫢😫I’m off to Cornwall in the morning for 10 days with steam Broadband so I may still be quiet! Subaru people use a quick change oil plug. It’s like the petcock valve on a radiator. I just bought a 23 wrx and I see those things often. At least you’ll have a chance to get something under it.

Changing fluids is never a bad thing, I never run to the service intervals, generally there are no fluids over 18 months old on my vehicle. You will always get more out of the sump plug than a vacuum. Hope you're not in to much trouble with Mrs Powerful for the state of your shirt.

I washed the shirt with fairy liquid and dried it with the heat gun in the workshop.... all good !

I don’t pull drain plugs. Use a proper vacuum drain tool drawing oil from dipstick tube. Faster and cleaner. No contamination. I just changed Castro Edge oil on my Defender 110.

For future reference you might consider replacing the sump plug with a right angle male-female hydraulic joint, with or without an extension pipe for easy future access. Use the sump plug or another stop-end to seal the end until the next service. These early Ingenium engines may be prone to premature timing chain guide wear and failure so keep your ears open at any time over 25,000 miles.

I have a Fumoto valve to check which looks interesting - does the timing chain impact the petrol and the diesel ?

@@L663 I believe so. The plastic chain guides wear and break apart. It is a common problem on early engines up to when they stopped fitting the four cylinder diesels to the Defender UK models. Combine harvesters are almost universally fitted with extension oil drain pipes so that an oil change can be performed without erecting scaffolding and squeezing into an exceptionally dirty confined space with no room to place a catch can. It’s not a big job to fabricate one and perhaps you could put a kit together for sale?

Nice video but I shan't be asking you to do an oil change for me! Anyway, I like your thinking with regard to not removing the undertray but a better idea would have been to use the vacuum suction pump for most of the oil and then remove the drain plug. That way would have been far less messy and you'd still have a clean shirt (I bet Mrs Powerful was not too pleased). And, you should have lubricated the 'O' ring on the filter housing.

its a bit like washing up.... do too good a job and you have a job for life.... so quite happy that i dont have a queue of people asking me to do their oil changes ! Yes i did see the lubricate the o ring in the instructions - but there was plenty of oil around and about !. I like the "hybrid" idea of oil change.... suck and drain...

Try doing a Oil Change on the Ford Ranger 3.2lt and 2.0lt Bu Turbo!!!! Ford say do it in less than 10 mins(!!!!!!) otherwise you run the risk of Oil Pump loosing its Oil and it won't prime itself meaning major headaches!!! We had had 3.2lt (takes 9lts of Oil ending up putting another 9lts in and the Oil Filter housing off and cranking the engine over to Prime the Oil Pump which fortunately it did but made a rushy old mess pumping oil out out the filter housing and then draining off any remaining excess the get the right level. Fortunately it's only happened the once but dread getting stuck with same problem again on another Ranger Oil change.

Its always my fear - no oil pressure after an oil change - in the old days i would disconnect the spark plugs and wait for the oil light to go out but not that easy now....if i disconnected the coild then i could ruin the catalytic converter....

There is only 1 part number on the system for the filer and the top casing. Was it the filer eleement or the top casing that was different on your car ?

Thanks for the instruction oil change, fun to watch. Is it a lot of work to remove the skidplate ? I always drain the oil when the engine is warm. Not pleasant to get the hot oil over your arm....

Have to say that the oil looks pretty nasty for being a petrol engine. Maybe once a year would be perfect. And usually the oil filter cap is tightened to max 25Nm. Good video👍

Yes for 1 year and 10K miles the oil looked a bit black and ready for a change...

I think the GPF regen dumps some unburnt fuel and soot and stuff into the oil… so certainly not a bad thing. If yours is the same as mine then the recommended interval is 2yr / 21,000 miles (though the car can say it needs it sooner depending on the computer). Just done mine at 12,000 miles and think it was the right thing to do

Wow. At the end of the day....what a shit akward way to do an oil change. The oil gets black after 100 miles, why? I have had landrovers for 40 years. 😂🤣😅😅😆😁😁😄. Mmmmmmm.........alarm bells tbh. love your enthusiasm. Will stick to real old school landrovers tbh. I have a 200, 300 and td5 that still has straw coloured oil after 2k. Had D3 and crank broke at 60k. The last genuine landrover engine was the storm td5 and probably is the the best genuine landrover engine ever made. In my opinion ?.
