This is happening nationwide as it's the " loophole" the corp investors as blackrock are doing so they can jack up the rent double or triple what they are paying,as it's starting with those that were on the moritorium getting state, fed money to pay landlords, and they are going after section 8,affordable housing,as using renovation as a excuse,in some cases making no repairs, just cosmetic,as internation investors also from china,Canada are involved.

They are not just renovating those apts, they're renovating the whole neighborhood. They are going burn it all down and put up condos and townhouses, then jacking up the price and probably throw in an HOA on top.

They are definitely doing that in many low income residences around America. Memphis is one of those places. They are kicking people out, tearing down the blight and building up luxury homes, condos, and areas the people who originally lived there could never afford. Everything in the housing spectrum of America has definitely become about the almighty dollar these days, that’s for sure. My prayers are for the less fortunate.

@@zoeyzed5127 - that's not true. One can rent their entire life and take the money for the maintenance, taxes etc. invest it and end up in better financial shape than a homeowner. It all depends on how you manage your money. You're a follower like most people being a homeowner is not all it's cracked up to be. Do your homework before you assume renting is a bad thing because most people cannot afford what they're trying to buy. Until you receive that deed, you own nothing. If you're retired an illness can take you to the poor house if you don't have good insurance, money saved, that 20% from medicare adds up too. I can put a horse in your back yard with photoshop and say you have a horse on public property and I was a news anchor trying to sale a story. Come on now. Don’t call out your people. The new owners have a right to renovate and reestablish the the property to attract tenants that will participate in caring for the facility and community. They cannot collect rent from inhabitable units, therefore they have to start from scratch. Being poor is not the problem with these tenants, the problem is the previous owners and current tenants did not maintain their community, so now these people are going to be displaced. Moral of the story for tenants and landlords, take care of your community.

Remember, these apartment property managers are owned by real estate investment firms. They take your rents and package together with other properties and turned into REIT securities, which are then traded back and forth with other investment firms like trading cards. The properties themselves are traded like cards with other real estate firms, which is why you see the management changing often on many of these apartments. They don't care about the renters, if you think about it.. it's like modern day legalized indentured servitude.

Regardless how you characterize it, they are still providing a service. If the tenants don't like the service, they are free to find other places to live, just like people shop for doctors, dentists, car repair shops, restaurants, etc. You don't like it? There are other options. Stop accepting managers and owners who allegedly "don't care about renters" and find those who do. Plenty of them.

My 200 unit apartment complex in south Florida was sold for $10 when the LIHTC program it was under expired. That's right, ten US dollars. My neighbor was a retired construction superintendent & knew how to find all the documents for our complex. It turns out, the original owner only wanted it as a tax offset to his high dollar rentals. When the credit ended, he sold it to a peer. The new guy immediately began remodeling. 2019 rent 1 BR $600, 2022 1 BR $1562. They know how to bust the old tenants out & the new tenants from NYC think the new rent is cheap.

It's sad but it's one of the drawbacks of renting. If you read your lease carefully the tenant has very few rights. Landlords can legally terminate leases whenever they want for whatever they want. The best thing you can do for yourself is try to keep money set aside if this ever happens - hard to do when you're on gov't assistance or low income but it's an absolute must these days. This property has a lot of problems aside from the poor building conditions. Gentrification is necessary - gunfire during a tv interview is indicative of the bigger problem. I'm sure these residents won't be able to afford to return when the construction is finished. Unfortunately this is going to push more people into homelessness. But it's also an opportunity to find better and do better for their families.

On the other hand you have around 200 tenants that have no place to go despite the allowed time given. 2 months is a decent amount of time. But it's not enough for people who have no savings. It’s been happening! Didn’t you know about Zillow buying so many properties that they couldn’t rent or sell them? Corporations have also been buying up properties to rent through Air BNB to the point that New Orleans, Seattle, L.A. and other cities were struggling with residents finding affordable housing.

One word....gentrification. I have mixed feelings on this one. Pretty sad that the property owner knows full well they are planning to increase their profits and displace what they consider a nuisance. Nevertheless, I would hope those people would want better and can hopefully improve their status in life. I pray they are able to be free from their despair.

That's exactly what it is... The neighborhood I grew up in Belvedere Park which is also on Columbia Dr has been totally taken over by whites... They will renovate and then charge an extra $1000+ and an HOA fee for the pool, clubhouse, gym, and other amenities. These people won't be able to live there once completed. That company should put people up in temporary housing if it's just that simple. But we all know it's not.

I had to come back and watch this video again to gain perspective on gratitude. I'm going through this now with a property management company and even though they helped me find a place to live (yes, with much higher rent), it has still been stressful packing, purging, paying moving expenses, fees to connect new utilities and more. I know they are going through it. Prayers to these families. I hope they're transition is smooth.

It is a slum. I am surprised it is not condemned already. Honestly, I am totally on the side of the owner wanting to repair it instead of just leaving it the way it is. It sucks for the tenant's to have to leave, but they shouldn't have been there in the first place. Being poor shouldn't mean they have to live in such terrible conditions. They should really file a lawsuit against the previous owner for allowing it to get to that condition.

The former owner was probably the city's housing authority ! Are a contractor with the city's housing authority . And they probably paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in maintenance it doesn't end up keep that never actually went to the property it's always a cash grab in these public housing situations . All these types of public housing situations do is ends up subsidizing the rich and the powerful who are the people who are hired to administrate public housing the money never goes back to the properties that's why these people end up living in squalor not because the city did not pay for the maintenance and that keep up the property because they hire people who are in their pocket who benefit from the maintenance contracts .
