The fact that Lara was struggling so much during this time that she was not even questioning just her talent and career choice, but her whole life (as in, whether she should even be/stay alive), and her fans knew it and did this for her. This is an incredible display of the capacity for the human race to be a loving, compassionate, and beautiful! Lara was suffering depression brought about by personal and professional problems. Her surprise is genuine. The audience and her pianist joined forces to give Lara this incredible gift right when she needed it the most. The audience didn't want her to sing because they wanted to sing this song to her from their hearts! It is a testament to her as a PERSON contra as an entertainer that the audience wanted to give her this gift. An artist only gets this level of love only when their fans see her as a person above all else and they know she needs the love and affirmation of her art. Lara is a treasure. She is a rarity because she is authentic, real, and never fake. If humanity can learn to do this to each other all the time how much better our world can be. As a few have already written below, taken from another commenter "This song "Je T'aime" (I love you) is Lara’s original song, and probably is her most famous and well-known song around the world (along with “Adagio”). This video is from Lara’s concert “Nue” in Paris in 2002. It really shows how much Lara’s fans love and support her. Here is a short story behind that performance: Lara had some serious problems in her professional and personal life at that time (2000-2002); she even had suicidal thoughts. Her fans new about that and they wanted to express their love and support to Lara on her concert in Paris. A group of Lara’s fans approached her pianist and musical director Pierre Grimard before the concert and agreed that they will begin to sing that song "Je T'aime" before Lara. When they sang for her they changed the words «Je t'aime" (I love you) to “On t’aime” which means “We love you”. The entire audience (more than 6000 people!) sang for her. Can you imagine this? Lara said that during this moment she realized the beauty of life, and that it’s really worth living it." I can not stop crying either...I love your reactions!! Blessings to you both!

This song was done at her "Live from Paris" 2001 (11 Songs). Her concert "From Lara with Love" was in 2000. Notice her face was fuller 2000 and much thinner in 2001. Speculation: this might be the results of her dark period where she questioned her profession and life in general. The song she performed prior to "Je t'aime" was "Parce que tu pars" (Andrea B on That's not Acting Either channel commented: "This song hits me so hard every time I watch it. It fills me with utter terror, to think how close she got to leave this world behind. To think, that her magical ray of light in this world was almost extinguished. To know how deep her desperation, her anguish, her hopelessness was. To know that there are people out there who were capable to hurt her so much, that she lost her will to live." This was the peak of her career. Some pointed out that the NEU concert was an art concert (from the stage background, lighting, and presentation). The seating capacity in the arena is around 7,000+ and it was 3 or 4 successive sold out concerts in Paris. Its her nature to get emotionally carried away by her songs or by her fans. She has a very strong fan base. The Lara with Love concert is more of stand alone performance while unleashing her vocal prowess. The Neu concert (2001)was more of connecting with the audience at the same being integrated with her band while performing . Her other concert En toute intimite (2003) it was an acoustic concert.

You can hear some people in the crowd shouting, "don't sing!" (in French), at the beginning. It shocked her into silence. That the fans would sing the song to her, and they changed the word's to 'we love you' when they did, she wasn't aware. That was set up between her fans and her crew because she really struggled in her live at this point. But you can really see her being shocked at the beginning of this song.

As far as I know she had a trouble time and she had also found out that Celin Dion (management) had prevented her career in the USA. Lara’s fans made an agreement with the pianist and sang the song for Lara. Have Celin Dion fans ever sung to her to comfort and support her? I think at that moment she felt that the USA is not the hub of the world and that she will have a great career like that.

This was a coordinated effort from her fans wanting to express their "Love" for Lara during a dark period in her professional and personal life which resulted in health issues and coupled by cruel comments by the French media. She began to question her existance and contemplated suicide. I believe a commenter in another reaction to Je t'aime stated that this was her 1st live appearance in a few years. The fans and pianist knew this was going to happen. Read that some 6000+ fans were given cards with instructions on what to do. You hear a faint cry from the audience at the beginning of the song "Don't sing Lara", hence the bewildered look on her face! She had stated in interviews that at this moment in time she knew life was worth living and subsequently crawled her way back into the light.
