My friend Alex Ward, chainsaw artist gave me a bunch of Walnut. In return, I made his wife a nice natural edge bowl. It turned out quite well.

That grain is fantastic ! That thick edge bowl would go really well in a rustic place like a log cabin or big lodge.

That is a fine piece of Walnut, Larry! I love that you were able to keep the bark on. Great finish you got on this piece, too! Enjoyed seeing the bowl gouge if even only for a short while. Fun video to watch, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil

I didn't have my sharpening jig set up and the walnut dulled the gouges in a heartbeat. I just thought I would use gouges before I forgot how. Don't get too excited, I still prefer carbides. I am ready to start a honey locus project that may wear me out. Total end grain, about 14" diameter and 6 inches deep. It's the cut-off from a salad bowl log I just finished. It probably weighs 20 lbs or more. It should be interesting. I just can't see that fine piece of wood go to waste. I wish you were closer, I would give it to you. I am really sort of dreading it. You take care, Larry

That's a fine-looking Bowl . I get my starbond by the large bottle and keep it in the fridge. Then in the shop I got a small fridge that holds about 4 cans ao soda (size wise) and I keep the small bottles in there when I am not using it. Thanks for another fantastic video. Tim

I generally keep mine in the fridge too. It will still harden on you if the lids are not tight. Been there done that. Take care and thank you, Larry

very nice Larry! Alex's wife will love it, im sure. it used to be common to see live edge walnut bowls for sale when i was a kid visiting N.W. Arkansas MANY years ago. my parents both came from bella vista. yes, its become a thing for me to hear you say "call your Mama". she's been gone almost 25 years, but i think about her every day.

Hi, love all of your work! Every day I check because I can't wait for your next video. I love your presentation and how you keep it real and transparent and straightforward but still talk it through. It is everything a new wood turner like me needs. You are truly inspirational and I would be proud to have a piece of yours in my home. I am sorry to here that subscribers have declined. I wish I could subscribe a 100 times but it doesn't work like that so I will do my best to share. Problem is I only know maybe 2 people that would maybe be interested and neither is a wood turner. But maybe we can change thier minds. The best I can do is try. Thank you so much for all of your videos you have taught me so much. I look forward to a video every day after work and the day there is one is a good day so thank you for that. So let's get you some more subscribers. I'll share with my cousin and son over text and I'll put it on my Facebook but I don't ever really look at face book so I don't know how much that will do but, I'm down. I just want you to know how much I appreciate and look forward to your videos. Thank you so much 💗 Nicole

Yeah, it's never recovered from when I was medical off due to a broken ankle and the shingles. Now, I have a knee replacement next Monday. So I won't be at the lathe for several weeks again. OR, I did something to piss off KZbin and they are not recommending my channel. Who knows, my goal is to hit 300 videos before I quit YouTubing. The next one will be 277, 24 to go. 277 is in the can, just needs editing, which I hate. But, one has to do what one has to do. Anyway, thanks for not giving up on me, I will be back. Take care, Larry

Very nice chunk of wood and an excellent job. I lrarn a little from all of you guys. I do a lot of Black Walnut and have several natural edge bowl sitting on my shelf right now and another mounted on the lathe
@TheWoodWhirler2 жыл бұрын
I understand that. I have 4 shelves full. I don't sell my work and everyone I know has bowls. They have gotten too picky. If it's not something really different they don't have room for more. I don't really care, I still love turning. Thanks and take care, Larry

You sure did get a good shine on that bowl. I always find it to be a hit and miss when I do Walnut. Some really shine while others just seem to get a dull shine.
@TheWoodWhirler2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sometimes walnut soaks it up and you have to put several coats of sealer on until it quits soaking it up. Thanks, Larry

Nice work Larry 👏! It's a shame you're not going to show the sanding. I think it's almost the most important part of wood-turning. Think about what your bowl would like if you didn't sand. Just think about it because I would like to see some of the sanding myself. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
@TheWoodWhirler2 жыл бұрын
The problem is, that when you have between 30 and 40 clips to condense into about 30 minutes it becomes challenging to show everything you would like to show. Plus it takes the better part of a day. So, you have to make cuts even if you would rather not. I think sanding is the most mundane and tedious part of the entire process and takes a long time when I could be showing processes with more action. I am certainly open to rethinking that if more subscribers show interest. As of now, you are the only one who would like to see more sanding. You never know, I am subject to change my mind at any time. I really appreciate your input. Take care, Larry

@@stephendonathan6782 Hey Steve, perhaps you fast-forwarded and missed it, but there are over 2 1/2 minutes of sanding starting at 8:28 and ending at 11:00 in this video. Just thought I would point that out in case you missed it. No big deal, you take care, Larry
@stephendonathan67822 жыл бұрын
@@TheWoodWhirler Yeah I caught that but you said after this video you was going to stop showing lol. It's no big deal tho I still like watching you turn because you're old school and don't care to voice your opinion on anything.
